Test Shots
Horror Short
Opening shot
• We really liked the opening
scene of “Lights Out” as it
opens the scene easily and
notifies the audience of where
the film is being set
• The audience can understand
the narrative a lot better when
the location is shown easily
Our version of the
opening shot
• We are planning to open our short
film using an establishing shot like
shown
• It’s easy to understand that the
scene will be set in a house but
also, what time of day etc
• We are planning to have the title of
the film appear on the house when
the establishing shot is taking place
• There will be a slight pan across the
house, so we’re not just staying still
on screen for a few seconds.
Ouija &
Conservatory
• We will be using a conservatory
within our short film and it’s
important to get a good angle when
filming
• Due to many windows surrounding
the area we plan to film, it’s
important to avoid/counter it
• The ouija board is the main object
within the scene within the
conservatory and we need to focus
on it correctly to show any signs of
paranormal activity.
Lighting
• I also tested some shots in relation
to lighting as it ’s a key convention
in the horror genre
• Being an important part of our
short film, it’s key to get the focus
right when filming
• The top right picture is a shot
without focus and it’s visible that
the shot can be quite blurry, which
isn’t nice to view
• The bottom picture is an example
of a shot in focus, it’s easier to
view and is crucial to get right
Stairway scene
• The stairway scene will be quite
hard to film within our production
due to the angle/Lighting
• Here I have two shots, one is
focused on the stairs, the other
at the top window
• This will capture the protagonist
walking up the staircase
• We will need to have the
focus/lighting right so it’s
understandable to the audience
These are test shots of the bedroom
we will have in our short film, we will
need to think about lighting and framing
when we film in it.
Here are a few more pictures
of the bathroom we are
planning to use when filming.
Due to it being an important
scene within the film, we need
to organise shots well.
The lighting will be very key
within the scene so we need to
try and find a good angle on
camera.
also, reflections are key within
this room due to reflections
from the shower and the
cupboard.
Bathroom test shots
• The bathroom scene will be very
important within our short film
• It will also test our camera skills and
the ability to focus on different objects
within a small amount of time
• Within this scene, we are hoping for
the protagonist to wash his face and
realise there are hand-prints on the
shower
• We are hoping to focus on the
shower, then focus on the
protagonist’s face, then return to
focusing on the shower to notice a
difference
Door lock
• I tested a door lock shot mainly
due to it playing a key part
within our short film
• I had to test the focus on the
lock which shows whether it is
locked or not
• Within the film, the paranormal
entity will unlock the door so
we have to capture it well
