This document discusses single camera filmmaking techniques. 1. Single camera shots learning aim A
Introduction
A single camera production is where the director decides to use one
camera to shot the entire film. This is where they just move to same
camera to get the same scene but different angle so the actors have to
do the same scene over and over till the director gets all the shots at
the angles they want.
One of the techniques used in a single camera production is the
Steadicam technique this shot is possible by a camera stabilizing
system that attaches to camera man so he can handhold the camera
but the camera won’t bounce up and down when the camera man
walks this make the scene look smoother and more fluent. The first
movie to use this technique was Bound for Glory in 1976 by Hal
Ashby but at this point there was only one made so it was difficult to
get your hands one and now most single camera production as it is
much easier move about and it gives the director more freedom to do
what they want.
A multi-camera productions are where the director use multiple
cameras to film the whole production this time but gives the director
limited camera angles to work with.
The difference between a single camera production and a multi-
camera production is that SCP uses only one camera, is done is a
longer time period, has less crew and equipment how in MCP has
more camera which means less space, more crew members to operate
the cameras and is done in a shorter time period.
Advantages of single camera production
One of the advantages of SCP is the budget because won’t have to
buy more than one camera or pay people to operate the cameras
which saves money.

2. Another advantage of SCP is the set up because you are only using
one camera you have to have to worry about the lighting being wrong
in camera and not in the other, you don’t have to shot all the scenes in
order you could do all the camera shots of one scene with one actor
one day then come back the next day with the other and finish
shooting the rest of the scene this save space and the studio won’t be
so crowed.
The director as more control over what angles can be use without
worrying if the camera will get other cameras in the shot and it’s easy
to move the camera from place to place.
Disadvantages of single camera productions
One of the disadvantages of SCP is that it is time consuming because
you have constantly move the camera from one place to another to get
the angles you want; you also have to move the lighting to get the
right lighting for the angle you want to shoot and you have to make
sure that the shots that you are taking for matching properly you also
have to take multiple individual takes.
Another disadvantage of SCP is challenging for the actors involved in
shooting the scene as they could find it difficult to stay in the zone
and you might not achieve the natural reactions that you want, this
might affect the flow the piece.

3. The purpose of the production is to create fear as it is a horror film.
When watching a horror film we expected it to be eerie and unsettling
the floating camera technique provides this, this shot is filmed using
the Steadicam. The Steadicam can do this because it mechanically
isolates the camera operator’s movements, this allows for smother
shots, even when moving up and down stairs. That is why Wes
Craven’s uses this technique because the camera is completely still
following the character (the little boy) throughout halls and always
having the character (the little boy) in the center of the shot to prove
that this is who you have to focus on which makes us think that
something bad is going to happen to the character (the little boy).
The camera is also at the same level of the character (the little boy) to
build suspense this camera angle also shows that the hallways are
empty and there is no one in sight the makes worried because if
something happens to the character (the little boy) then there is no one
who will hear him scream for help. The camera and the character (the
little boy) take a lot of turns this gives us the impression that the place
that they are in is like a maze so you can easily get lost if you’re not
paying attention.

4. The purpose of this production is to build suspense, to create drama
and to scare the audience this is done by using a tracking system this
is where the camera is mounted on a rail system so it can follow the
scene backwards, forwards or side-to-side so you can get a smother
shot like in this scene. The camera moves around the room to show
there is only one person in the room then is goes behind the
character to show that another character as just appeared out of
nowhere this creates a sense of mystery because you don’t know
where the second character came from and how he got to where he
is so fast. There is also over the shoulder shots in this scene this is
to make us feel what the characters are feeling in that current
moment.

5. The purpose of this advert is to get more people to buy Maltesers by
using shot-reverse-shot to relate to the audience this advert talks
about an awkward moment and people can relate to awkward
moments and this ad says “look on the light side” this suggests that
when you have Maltesers there will also be a brighter side that
people can laugh at. The shot starts with a sideways shot of one of
the characters to show her emotions to the story being told to her
then goes to a wide shot of the area to show you that the characters
are in a public place then back to the character with glasses then
back to the wide shot to show this create a sense of familiarity to the
scene. There is also an overhead shot when the other character
makes the Maltesers go everywhere this gives us a better
understanding of the situation this also makes us feel the
awkwardness that the character is feeling at the moment.
