- Leader’s Notes Use the material in these slides to extend your retreat to a kjhljhlhklj-day retreat. Provided here are an introduction to begin your retreat, an exercise to use at the midpoint of your retreat, and an activity to lead into the closing prayer of your retreat.
- Leader’s Notes Use this Introduction before Part 1. Time frame for Introduction: 30 minutes. Assign small groups. Tell each group to imagine they are going to make a visit to someone. Give each group a specific example of a visit—that is, visiting: - Relatives. - Someone who is ill. - A grandparent or an elderly relative. - A friend. - Another family. - New neighbors. - An older sibling at his or her school or job. - Other example(s) of your choosing. Ask the groups each of the questions on the slide. Allow several minutes for sharing on each question. Have the groups role-play the type of visit within their small group. Then have the groups come forward and perform their visit for the entire class. Ask the groups to explain why they chose to say, do, or bring the things they did on their visit. Then introduce the retreat by telling the children that we can “visit” Jesus anytime in prayer. Jesus is the Son of God who loves us.
- Leader’s Notes Use this exercise after Part 3. Total time frame for Midway Exploration: 45 minutes. Invite the children to look at the image of Jesus. Allow a few minutes for reflection. Then advance to the next slide, continuing Midway Exploration.
- Leader’s Notes Prepare for this exercise by selecting in advance an item that can symbolize love and comfort for the children, such as a plush heart or a special stuffed animal. Arrange the children in a circle. Introduce the activity by explaining to the children that we can listen to Jesus when we pray. We can also listen to Jesus in the things that our parents and others who love us say to us. Explain that the children will pass around the item you have selected and, as they do so, take turns telling about the experience of listening to someone who loves them. Explain that while the one child is speaking, the rest should respectively and attentively listen. Hand a child in the circle the item you have chosen. Invite him or her to tell about the experience of listening to someone who loves him or her and then pass the item to the next child. That child will then speak. Continue this process until all have taken a turn. When all have finished sharing, explain that just as the children have been really listening to one another, Jesus also really listens to us. Jesus is God’s Son who loves us with all his heart. We listen to Jesus, and he listens to us.
- Leader’s Notes Use this exercise after Part 5. Total time frame for Going Deeper: 45 minutes. Prepare for this exercise by printing in advance the poem from the “Prayer Rock” handout. For each child, gather in advance small light stones or pebbles from a craft store or from nature; lengths of fabric to cover each stone; and strips of colored ribbon long enough to tie around each stone. (Be prepared to monitor children to keep them from throwing or tossing the stones.) Distribute the materials. Explain that each child is going to make a small “prayer rock” to serve as a reminder to talk to and listen to Jesus. Invite each child to wrap his or her stone in the fabric and to tie this wrapped rock with a ribbon. Hand out copies of the prayer rock poem to accompany the stones. Invite the children to bring their prayer rocks home and keep them under their pillow. Remind the children to pray to Jesus morning and night.
