Scalability
Because of advances in data generation and collection, data sets with sizes of terabytes, petabytes, or even exabytes are becoming common. If data mining algorithms are to handle these massive data sets, they must be scalable. Many data mining algorithms employ special search strategies to handle exponential search problems. Scalability may also require the implementation of novel data structures to access individual records in an efficient manner. For instance, out-of-core algorithms may be necessary when processing data sets that cannot fit into main memory. Scalability can also be improved by using sampling or developing parallel and distributed algorithms. A general overview of techniques for scaling up data mining algorithms is given in Appendix F.
High Dimensionality
It is now common to encounter data sets with hundreds or thousands of attributes instead of the handful common a few decades ago. In bioinformatics, progress in microarray technology has produced gene expression data involving thousands of features. Data sets with temporal or spatial components also tend to have high dimensionality. For example,
consider a data set that contains measurements of temperature at various locations. If the temperature measurements are taken repeatedly for an extended period, the number of dimensions (features) increases in proportion to the number of measurements taken. Traditional data analysis techniques that were developed for low-dimensional data often do not work well for such high-dimensional data due to issues such as curse of dimensionality (to be discussed in Chapter 2 ). Also, for some data analysis algorithms, the computational complexity increases rapidly as the dimensionality (the number of features) increases.
Heterogeneous and Complex Data
Traditional data analysis methods often deal with data sets containing attributes of the same type, either continuous or categorical. As the role of data mining in business, science, medicine, and other fields has grown, so has the need for techniques that can handle heterogeneous attributes. Your annotated references should identify a minimum of five separate sources of information (in addition to the course text) about your topic. The more recent the sources – the better. The idea is to choose a topic that is sufficiently narrow and focused so that it is manageable in a 12-15 page paper plus references and cover page. Regardless of the topic you choose, your paper must present some kind of analysis supported by published research.
Analysis involves asking an important question. What, for example, are the most important features of a political conflict that generates notice of a relevant issue? Or, which features of a political issue or reform merits change and is significant in California Politics today? For instance: Water and the implications of drought? Building a peripheral canal? The effects of campaign reform financing?

Your annotated references should identify a minimum of five separate sources of information (in addition to the course text) about your topic. The more recent the sources – the better. Articles are more useful than books. Conduct a decent literature search in ProQuest. Be cautious when using only WWW sources. They are not all equally credible.
Avoid only popular magazines – Time, Newsweek, Psychology Today, Parents Magazine, etc. Similarly, avoid electronic sources for which the organizational affiliation is unknown. I. Background
This is a group assignment. Each group may be comprised of three (3) or four (4) people. Groups of two are not allowed; groups greater than four are not allowed.
During class time groups will be formed. On the day the groups are formed, each group member will present a potential research project idea to the group. Each group will vote to decide what topic to use for the group research report and presentation. Please see the list of suggested topics included in this document. Make sure you select a business-related topic.
The group will complete a research paper and a presentation. Detailed information about these assignments is included in this document. Carefully review all of the information contained under the Deliverables section in order to complete all the requirements for these assignments.
The group will also complete three small assignments related to this topic, team logistics, the work plan, and the proposal. In addition, you will turn in a group folder which contains various documents. Instructions for the small assignments will be given in class and on the Group Assignments folder on Beach Board. Everyone in the group will receive the same grade for these assignments. In addition, the group participation points will be “earned” points. Attendance during class time allocated to group work is required in order to gain the maximum group participation points.

II. Purpose
There goals of this project serve four of the six course objectives for IS 301:
a. Contribute to the solutions of business problems through collecting, evaluating, organizing, analyzing, and presenting information using proper style and form.
b. Conduct research using a broad range of sources, synthesizing and judging the quality of collected information.
c. Plan, prepare, and present a variety of oral and written messages required in a typical business organization.

For this media analysis, you will analyze how one part affects the whole media production.
Note that you should select only a single piece of media; you should not be discussing more
than one film, for example. You should choose one1 of the following parts to explore:
Genre: Explain how the production you chose fits into its genre.
Camera: Analyze how the camera’s use (camera angles, for instance) affects the
overall production.
Lighting: Describe how lighting is used to enhance or detract from the production.
Actors/Characters: Analyze how the actors OR the characters themselves enhance or
detract from the production.
Symbols: Explain what the symbols are and how their usage affects the overall
production.
Music: Describe how the music enhances or detracts from the media production.
Sound Effects: Analyze how the sound effects enhance or detract from the
production.
Special Effects: Explain what special effects are used and how they affect the viewing
experience.
Comparison to a Literary Work: (Note: This option may only be chosen if the film you

Your purpose in this assignment is to explain how or why something works; therefore, you
should not include a full summary of the media production. Instead, you can provide context
where needed so the reader understands what is happening. The body of the essay must

Use this slide to clarify the connections between your research project and the lines of conjecture and investigation detailed in current literature that is being reviewed here. - 4. Methodology The Methodology Slide describes in detail how your group’s study was conducted. It addresses the steps that were taken to collect data and how your group analyzed the data. Remember try not to use too many images or graphics. Keep to one slide.
- 5. Results The Results Slide is where your group presents its findings and shows the analysis of the results. Include the main thesis that answers your research question to the extent that is possible. This slide should offer evidence and analysis of that evidence to support the answer to the research question for your group. This can be more than one slide, as it is the bulk of this presentation.
- 6. Discussion Use the Discussion Slide to offer some brief thoughts on possible influences that could have affected your research results. For example, biases, omissions, and lack of information. Also discuss limiting factors on your group’s conclusions. This gives the reader a sense of how solid the conclusions are. Another thing to put on this slide is what further question still need to be answered and future research possibilities. Keep to one slide.
- 7. Conclusion The Conclusion Slide should summarize your findings and give the reader a sense of why your group’s study important. Plus, try to articulate what your findings imply. Keep to one slide.
