This document summarizes a European telecom operator's migration from TDM to packet-based mobile backhaul using Tellabs' IntegratedMobile solution. The operator had four goals: 1) stop spending on outdated TDM networks, 2) utilize cheaper transport like Ethernet and DSL, 3) gain efficiencies through statistical multiplexing, and 4) converge 3G services onto other packet networks without compromising quality. Tellabs helped the operator achieve this through a three-step process: 1) adding multi-service transport over an Ethernet metro network, 2) migrating RNC links to packet routers, and 3) migrating NodeB links to packet routers.
This presentation highlights the upgrading steps for improved traffic aggregation at the regional hub sites in order to optimize traffic backhauling to the network core.
In addition, a reliable, passive access solution to cellular mobile traffic for a Quality of Service (QoS) monitoring and billing has been proposed.
