Why Study Television at All?
Why study television? For starters, because it’s undeniably, unavoidably
“there.” And, it seems, everywhere. What people do with television is a topic
worth thinking about and studying because television enters into the everyday
lives of so many different people in so many different places in so many
different ways. Today, around the world, 3.5 billion hours will be devoted to
watching television.1 But nowhere is television such an integral part of
everyday life as in the United States. Ninety-two million homes in the U.S.
have ât least one TV set (98 percent of the total population). Nearly 70
percent of those homes have more than one set. More American homes are
equipped with television sets than with telephones. Those sets are on in the
average household for more than seven hours every day. Between seven and
eleven P.M., Americans of every demographic, social, and economic group
are spending most of their time in a place where a television set is playing.

Growths and trends tv
TV viewing has significantly increased since the 1960s, from 5 hours and 38 minutes per day in 1964 to 7 hours and 39 minutes in 2004. While there were just three major networks in 1964, cable TV was introduced later, and today TV can be viewed online through sites like iPlayer. TV has evolved from black and white to color sets, and from CRT to modern LCD, plasma and LED displays. Brands like Samsung, LG, Sony and Sharp now dominate the TV market. Commercials have been a key part of TV since the 1940s, both sponsoring whole shows and advertising in blocks, with prices varying based on the popularity of the show.

- 7. What? Television– is a widely used telecommunication medium for transmitting and receiving moving images, either monochromatic ("black and white") or color, usually accompanied by sound. "Television" may also refer specifically to a television set, television programming or television transmission. The word is derived from mixed Latin and Greek roots, meaning "far sight": Greek tele (τῆλε), far, and Latin visio, sight (from video, vis- to see, or to view in the first person).
