TELECOMMUNICATION INDUSTRY
The telecommunications industries within the sector of information and
communication technology is made up of all telecommunications/telephone
companies and internet service providers and plays the crucial role in the
evolution of mobile communications and the information society.
Traditional telephone calls continue to be the industry's biggest revenue
generator, but thanks to advances in network technology, telecom today is less
about voice and increasingly about text (messaging, email) and images (e.g.
video streaming). High-speed internet access for computer-based data
applications such as broadband information services and interactive
entertainment, is pervasive. Digital subscriber line (DSL) is the main broadband
telecom technology. The fastest growth comes from (value-added) services
delivered over mobile networks.
SITUATION in INDIA
Telecom, at present, is one of the fastest-growing industries in India. As of
January 2014,
according to the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) there are 922
million wireless
and over the wire subscribers in India,1 and 56.90 million broadband
subscribers including
wired, wireless and wimax subscribers.2 India’s overall wireless teledensity was
quoted as
having 893.31million subscribers, with a 0.79% (7.02 million) monthly addition.
Of these, 59.25% are urban subscribers and 40.75% are rural subscribers.
The conversations engaged by the users on digital platforms range from casual
conversations to confidential professional or personal communications. Service

AGR CASE
AGR is a fee-sharing mechanism between government and the telcos who shifted to 'revenue-sharing
fee' model in 1999, from the 'fixed license fee' model. In this course, telcos are supposed to share a
percentage of AGR with the government.
Why the dispute? --The dispute between the telcos and the government has been mainly on the
definition of AGR. The two sides were locked in a legal battle over the definition of AGR for more than a
decade. While the government says that AGR includes all revenues from both telecom as well as non-
telecom services, the operators suggest that it should include only the revenue from core services. On
October 24, 2019, the top court widened the definition of AGR to include the government's view.
The October 2019 verdict - In a massive setback for telecom companies, the SC rejected their
definition of AGR and exposed the firms to demands by the Department of Telecom (DoT) of
more than Rs 1 lakh crore. The court ordered to include all revenues, except for termination fee
and roaming charges, as a part of the AGR.
CONCLUSION
From the survey that we have conducted, it was observed that 78.6% of the total users opted for
all the services( wi-fi, mobile data, unlimited calling ) and we're more inclined to prepaid telecom
service as suggested by the figures in the survey(82.1%). 50% 9f the total user preferred the airtel
telecom service followed by Jio(21.4%). On the question of other service providers other than the
preferred one, the customer opted for either Jio or airtel since they both had equal preference
among the customers. 75% of the total users we're satisfied by the services of their respective
telecom providers. Based on the findings of the survey, around 39.3% of the total users spent
around 500-800 rupees monthly for the services extended by their respective telecom providers
followed by 32.1% of the users spending around 800-1500 rupees When asked about their
preference on better network coverage or call quality or data speed or all of the above. Most of
the users around 85.7% opted for all of the above. Most of the users around 89.3% of the total
users preferred the online mode for recharge with only 10.7% of the users opting for offline.

  • 13. AGR CASE AGR is a fee-sharing mechanism between government and the telcos who shifted to 'revenue-sharing fee' model in 1999, from the 'fixed license fee' model. In this course, telcos are supposed to share a percentage of AGR with the government. Why the dispute? --The dispute between the telcos and the government has been mainly on the definition of AGR. The two sides were locked in a legal battle over the definition of AGR for more than a decade. While the government says that AGR includes all revenues from both telecom as well as non- telecom services, the operators suggest that it should include only the revenue from core services. On October 24, 2019, the top court widened the definition of AGR to include the government's view. The October 2019 verdict - In a massive setback for telecom companies, the SC rejected their definition of AGR and exposed the firms to demands by the Department of Telecom (DoT) of more than Rs 1 lakh crore. The court ordered to include all revenues, except for termination fee and roaming charges, as a part of the AGR.
