Embedded systems in several applications require a graphics system to display some application-specific
information. Yet, commercial graphic cards for the embedded systems either incur high costs, or they are
inconvenient to use. Furthermore, they tend to quickly become obsolete due to the advances in display technology. On the other hand, FPGAs provide reconfigurable hardware resources that can be used to implement graphics system in which they can be reconfigured to meet the ever-evolving requirements of graphics systems. Motivated from this fact, this study considers the design and implementation of a 2D graphics system on FPGA. The graphics system proposed is composed of a CPU IP core, peripheral IP cores (Bresenham, BitBLT, DDR Memory Controller, and VGA) and PLB bus to which CPU and all peripheral IP cores are attached. Furthermore, some graphics drivers and APIs are developed to complete
the whole graphics creation process.

Extracting text from an image and reproducing them can often be a laborious task. We took it upon ourselves to solve the problem. Our work is aimed at designing a robot which can perceive an image shown to it and reproduce it on any given area as directed. It does so by first taking an input image and performing image processing operations on the image to improve its readability. Then the text in the image is recognized by the program. Points for each letter are taken, then inverse kinematics is done for each point with MATLAB/Simulink and the angles in which the servo motors should be moved are found out and stored in the Arduino. Using these angles, the control algorithm is generated in the Arduino and the letters are drawn.

How to Position Your Globus Data Portal for Success Ten Good PracticesGlobus
Science gateways allow science and engineering communities to access shared data, software, computing services, and instruments. Science gateways have gained a lot of traction in the last twenty years, as evidenced by projects such as the Science Gateways Community Institute (SGCI) and the Center of Excellence on Science Gateways (SGX3) in the US, The Australian Research Data Commons (ARDC) and its platforms in Australia, and the projects around Virtual Research Environments in Europe. A few mature frameworks have evolved with their different strengths and foci and have been taken up by a larger community such as the Globus Data Portal, Hubzero, Tapis, and Galaxy. However, even when gateways are built on successful frameworks, they continue to face the challenges of ongoing maintenance costs and how to meet the ever-expanding needs of the community they serve with enhanced features. It is not uncommon that gateways with compelling use cases are nonetheless unable to get past the prototype phase and become a full production service, or if they do, they don't survive more than a couple of years. While there is no guaranteed pathway to success, it seems likely that for any gateway there is a need for a strong community and/or solid funding streams to create and sustain its success. With over twenty years of examples to draw from, this presentation goes into detail for ten factors common to successful and enduring gateways that effectively serve as best practices for any new or developing gateway.
Climate Science Flows: Enabling Petabyte-Scale Climate Analysis with the Eart...Globus
The Earth System Grid Federation (ESGF) is a global network of data servers that archives and distributes the planet’s largest collection of Earth system model output for thousands of climate and environmental scientists worldwide. Many of these petabyte-scale data archives are located in proximity to large high-performance computing (HPC) or cloud computing resources, but the primary workflow for data users consists of transferring data, and applying computations on a different system. As a part of the ESGF 2.0 US project (funded by the United States Department of Energy Office of Science), we developed pre-defined data workflows, which can be run on-demand, capable of applying many data reduction and data analysis to the large ESGF data archives, transferring only the resultant analysis (ex. visualizations, smaller data files). In this talk, we will showcase a few of these workflows, highlighting how Globus Flows can be used for petabyte-scale climate analysis.
Providing Globus Services to Users of JASMIN for Environmental Data AnalysisGlobus
JASMIN is the UK’s high-performance data analysis platform for environmental science, operated by STFC on behalf of the UK Natural Environment Research Council (NERC). In addition to its role in hosting the CEDA Archive (NERC’s long-term repository for climate, atmospheric science & Earth observation data in the UK), JASMIN provides a collaborative platform to a community of around 2,000 scientists in the UK and beyond, providing nearly 400 environmental science projects with working space, compute resources and tools to facilitate their work. High-performance data transfer into and out of JASMIN has always been a key feature, with many scientists bringing model outputs from supercomputers elsewhere in the UK, to analyse against observational or other model data in the CEDA Archive. A growing number of JASMIN users are now realising the benefits of using the Globus service to provide reliable and efficient data movement and other tasks in this and other contexts. Further use cases involve long-distance (intercontinental) transfers to and from JASMIN, and collecting results from a mobile atmospheric radar system, pushing data to JASMIN via a lightweight Globus deployment. We provide details of how Globus fits into our current infrastructure, our experience of the recent migration to GCSv5.4, and of our interest in developing use of the wider ecosystem of Globus services for the benefit of our user community.

TeleCAD-GIS
What is TeleCAD-GIS?
TeleCAD-GIS is a software application for planning, designing, analyzing, documenting and maintaining
telecommunications infrastructure (fiber-optics, copper, conduit, coaxial...). It uses AutoCAD (or AutoCAD
MAP 3D) as an underlying platform upon which it builds industry specific tools and expends it with an
object model of telecommunications objects.
TeleCAD-GIS is a flagship product of INOVA and serves as a INOVA GIS Platform main client tool, at the
same time it can be used outside the platform environment as a standalone tool.
Whom is it for?
TeleCAD-GIS can be used as:
a standalone application or.
as a part of much wider system - INOVA GIS Platform (enterprise GIS).
TeleCAD-GIS (Standalone)
In this case TeleCAD-GIS is suitable for all those business subjects that don’t have the need for keeping
their data in a centralized GIS database. These include design companies, telecom subcontractors, smaller
companies, freelance engineers etc.
INOVA GIS Platform (enterprise GIS)
As a part of the platform, TeleCAD-GIS is used to maintain, view and analyze complex telecommunications
networks. Multiple concurrent users can edit data at the same time, collaborate on projects, exchange
project related data etc. All this makes it perfect for companies that own OSP/ISP facilities, making
maintenance, analysis and presentation of such data very efficient.
(INOVA GIS Platform is described in more details in the document called: “INOVA GIS Platform.pdf”.)

Basic module
Basic module includes: pathway, project management, prepress and general tools module accompanied by
various basic functions required to run these and other modules (e.g. drawing tools, layers management,
automatic numbering of network elements, reporting tools…).
Raster module
Raster module is used for cartographic material processing (calibration and geo-referencing) and work with
raster images in general.
It includes algorithms (tools) for removal of distortions that occur during the scanning process of paper
documentation or distortions that are consequence of storing conditions (e.g. high level of humidity).
Conduit module
Conduit module is used to design, document, analyze and maintain telecommunications conduit network.
It supports representation of network elements such as: duct bank, conduit, inner ducts, sheeting ducts
manholes etc. Cables and ducts are pulled through larger size ducts using intuitive GUI of manhole butterfly
diagram and/or trench cross section diagram. Manhole butterfly diagram is also used to arrange
infrastructure elements on the walls of a manhole. Schematic diagram of conduit network enables analysis,
filtering and routing.
Copper module
Copper module is used to design, document, analyze and maintain network of telecommunications copper
cables. It supports representation of network elements such as: exchange, cables, splice points, slack loops,
termination points, NIDs, public telephones, utility poles etc. Some of the automated tools included in this

module are: network optimization (optimization of: cable capacity, splice case type…), splicing tools
(manual and automatic splicing), topology analyzer etc.
Fiber Optics module
Fiber Optics module is used to design, document, analyze and maintain fiber optic telecommunications
networks. It supports presentation of network elements such as: distribution frames, splice points, slack
loops, fiber optical cables (down to each individual fiber) etc. Fiber optic network can be viewed, analyzed,
filtered and edited using automatically generated schematic diagram. Module also implements Intuitive
GUI for editing, modeling and splicing node elements (ODF, splice…).
OTDR module
Using this module, results of OTDR (Optical time-domain reflectometer) measurements are processed and
location of the outage is displayed on the map. OTDR module can be integrated with RFTS monitoring
(Remote Fiber Test System).
EMI (Electromagnetic interference calculation)
Module for calculation of electromagnetic impact of high power lines and railway electric traction facilities
on copper cables telecommunications lines.

Features
Some of the TeleCAD-GIS main features are:
Automatic Schematic Diagrams
Automatic creation of interactive schematic diagrams both Conduit and Fiber-Optics Network. Works well
even for diagrams with large number of elements. Additionally, diagrams can be arranged manually.
Analyze, edit and print infrastructure using Schematic Diagrams. Schematic Diagram is not just a diagram.
It’s a tool. Infrastructure can be analyzed and edited directly on the diagram. Double click opens
termination point or splice point for further editing. Diagrams and Map (or Situation plan) are
synchronized. Different views of Schematic Diagram can easily be prepared for print.
Fig. 1- Automatically generated fiber schematic (used for analyzing, editing… also printable).
TeleCAD-GIS possesses the rich set of tools for creation of different interactive schematic views and for
printing situation plans in different scales.
In case of fiber optics network most interesting tools are:
main schematic plan and
detailed fiber connection plan.
Main schematic plan displays cable route with node elements, manholes as well as length between node
elements and total length.
Detailed fiber connections plan displays all fibers together with splices/connections within splice points
(joints) and terminations. Circuit names are displayed as well. Fibers can be presented individually or
grouped (pairs, user defined…)

Overlap resolving
Infrastructure on the map and on the situation plan (DWG drawing) is shown accurately, as it is positioned
in the real world. On the other hand it can also be automatically shown in resolve overlapping mode. In
this case linear infrastructure is shown parallel, side by side making it more readable. When the GIS
database is viewed in overlapping mode, overlapping is performed in real time.

Physical and logical structures
TeleCAD-GIS combines presentation of both physical and logical structures.
OTDR Trace
Fig. 6 – OTDR Trace
TeleCAD-GIS includes OTDR trace module. Its primary purpose is locating the position of the event or
element that caused the outage, however it can be used for other purposes too.
Left side of the window displays schematic view of the selected fiber with all slack loops, splice points and
terminations. A lower part of the window shows 3D longitudinal section for selected fiber. Central part is
reserved for the situation plan (map). By entering the measured value obtained from the OTDR device
element/event location is displayed on the map (accompanied with GPS coordinates). It is possible to enter
the value measured from any node element.

Finding the shortest available path between arbitrary nodes
This function provides a simple solution to a very complex problem. If there is a user that requires a new
link or there is an outage and we need to reduce downtime to a minimum than we can use this tool to find
the alternative available path along existing infrastructure. In the mean time we can work on a permanent
solution (in case of an outage). This function includes options to search for the path along free fibers, all
fibers, user selected fibers... Another option is to allow creation of new splices and/or connections via
patch cables within node elements in order to create path between elements.

9
As a result we get a schematic view where the fibers that comply with our request are highlighted and the
node elements that require some kind of action are marked (e.g. ODF in which we need to patch ports in
order to create required fiber path).
Single source
Designing, editing, analyzing, maintenance and documenting (preparing for print) is single sourced.
Documentation is no longer scattered in different types of files (Word, Visio, DWG, Excel, paper
documentation…). Instead, everything is stored in GIS database while different types of documentation are
generated on demand.
Project Manager
Project manager enables centralized organizing of all documents in stage of planning or designing. When it
comes to documentation, it enables insight in history of changes (e.g. problems, notes, questions…) during
the process of making the documentation. It does so from the moment of project creation until final
acceptance into the GIS database.
Generating reports
Generate reports automatically. Various reports can be generated automatically.
Arranging labels
Labels are arranged automatically in such manner that they are always clearly visible (no overlapping). If
some of the labels are arranged by the user their position will not be altered during automatic arranging.
Prepress
Within a single TeleCAD-GIS project (DWG document) you can generate following layouts for print:
1. Detailed schematic view of distribution frame (with fiber connections)
2. Detailed view of splicing within splice point
3. Manhole butterfly diagram
4. Trench cross section
5. Situation plan for different types of infrastructure (conduit, copper, fiber optic or all together).
6. Multiple sheets can be generated automatically.
7. Schematic diagram of fibers (as previously stated)
8. Schematic diagram of conduit network (as previously stated)
9. …
