7. In the Beginning
• Fenelon Forward was formed 10 years ago to “improve
Fenelon Falls”
• Business Retention and Expansion (BR&E) partners included:
• Fenelon Falls and District Chamber of Commerce
• City of Kawartha Lakes
• OMAFRA

8. Outcomes
1) Weekly Digital Newsletter called Town Crier produced by the
Chamber of Commerce and distributed to a readership of over
2000 in a town of fewer than 2000 residents (2013)
2) Downtown revitalization sequel to BR&E process (ongoing)
3) Creation of Kawartha Works Community Cooperative (2015)
4) Formation of the Community Foundation of Kawartha Lakes for
charitable receipting (2019)

9. Purpose
To enable the creation, development and management of not-
for-profit initiatives with artistic, cultural, recreational, health,
environmental, economic and social improvements

10. Through
• Sharing incorporation for eligibility to receive grants
• Sharing costs such as insurance and administration
• Collaborating to share resources of funds and volunteers

11. How
• Membership is on an individual basis--$5 a year
• To participate each community group project needs to form
a management committee of at least 5 coop members
• A Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between each
project and KWCC specifies the annual planning, financial
and reporting arrangements

ABLE family support network: Mutual support
Impact 32: beautification and other improvements in
Bobcaygeon
Fenelon Live: local events especially heritage festival

Fenelon Housing Partners: developing
rental/affordable/supportive
Bike rentals in Bobcaygeon and Fenelon Falls
Fenelon Arts Committee: sculpture in public gardens
Latest: The Grove outdoor amphitheatre and summer festival

• An array of thriving initiatives for community benefit
• Strong relationships among organizations working together
• In five years total grants, donations and other revenue close
to $500,000 and more than $50,000 saved in insurance,
accounting and other administrative costs
• Readiness for quick action as ideas emerge
