Adding Value to Cultural Heritage (the 2012 edition)Olaf Janssen
Lecture for the masters' course Digital Access to Cultural Heritge (DACH) for Leiden University, 22nd March 2012.
In this presentation I use the BMICE-ring model and Tim O'Reilly's Web2.0-priciples to explain how cultural heritage institutions (GLAMS), and libraries in particular, can add value to their Web1.0 online services.
Tricks and Tips for Adding Localization Features to Your Mobile AppsTechWell
The fact that 60 percent of all iPhone users worldwide are non-native English speakers is just one reason for supporting people from many countries and regions in your apps. Even if multi-language applications are not called for, localization features for single language apps will improve usability and acceptance from users across many cultures and geographic areas. Using an English-only iOS application from Nordstrom as an example, Shawn Larson shows you how with little effort you can add international support to your applications. He walks you through implementing code to take advantage of foundation classes and their associated matters to help you deal easily with international support issues like decimal, thousands separator, sorting, quotes, beginning and ending characters, date-time formats, calendars, name order, and more. Join Shawn, an IoS developer at Nordstrom, to see how easy it is to add international support that is much more than adding translating strings to text fields.
Silicon halton Meetup 39 Keynote presentation by CIO of Sheridan College Silicon Halton
Sheridan College is a large institution with over 50,000 students across 4 campuses. The presentation discusses Sheridan's vision, values and goals to become a leader in innovation and creativity. It provides an overview of Sheridan's IT landscape including staff, systems, infrastructure and key initiatives. Examples of new technology projects and tools are described, such as the Sheridan mobile app, learning management system and oneCARD. Data from student surveys on technology use is presented. Upcoming IT projects aim to further enhance the student experience through innovative learning spaces and 21st century tools.
This document discusses using mobile devices like iPods and iPads to facilitate vocational learning. Omnia, a vocational education provider, is piloting the use of these devices for special needs students, on-the-job learning, and demonstrating competencies. The devices allow learning to take place anywhere and help differentiate instruction. A business administration program provides students iPod Touches to use for both in-class and on-the-job learning over two to three years. Mobile devices open opportunities for collaborative, hands-on, and peer-to-peer learning.
A smart phone offers advanced capabilities and personal digital assistant features to help users stay organized and communicate through calling, emailing, and media sharing, connecting via WiFi, Bluetooth, and touchscreens. Smart phones improve productivity and communication in workplaces by allowing users to send emails and use business apps from anywhere. While smart phones could negatively impact student learning, they can also make learning easier through educational apps and prepare students for technology use in future careers. Overall, smart phones provide many benefits for managing modern life despite some disadvantages.

The IT sector in India has experienced phenomenal growth since economic reforms in the early 1990s. It has grown many folds in revenues from 1.2% of GDP in 1991-92 to an estimated 9.3% in 2015-2016. There are now around 600 centers set up by Indian IT companies in 78 countries serving over 200 cities. The IT sector is expected to reach revenues of $225 billion by 2020. IT services make up the largest share of the Indian IT market at 52% while business process management accounts for 19% and software products and engineering services make up 20%.

A tale of scale & speed: How the US Navy is enabling software delivery from l...sonjaschweigert1
Rapid and secure feature delivery is a goal across every application team and every branch of the DoD. The Navy’s DevSecOps platform, Party Barge, has achieved:
- Reduction in onboarding time from 5 weeks to 1 day
- Improved developer experience and productivity through actionable findings and reduction of false positives
- Maintenance of superior security standards and inherent policy enforcement with Authorization to Operate (ATO)
Development teams can ship efficiently and ensure applications are cyber ready for Navy Authorizing Officials (AOs). In this webinar, Sigma Defense and Anchore will give attendees a look behind the scenes and demo secure pipeline automation and security artifacts that speed up application ATO and time to production.
We will cover:
- How to remove silos in DevSecOps
- How to build efficient development pipeline roles and component templates
- How to deliver security artifacts that matter for ATO’s (SBOMs, vulnerability reports, and policy evidence)
- How to streamline operations with automated policy checks on container images

Removing Uninteresting Bytes in Software FuzzingAftab Hussain
Imagine a world where software fuzzing, the process of mutating bytes in test seeds to uncover hidden and erroneous program behaviors, becomes faster and more effective. A lot depends on the initial seeds, which can significantly dictate the trajectory of a fuzzing campaign, particularly in terms of how long it takes to uncover interesting behaviour in your code. We introduce DIAR, a technique designed to speedup fuzzing campaigns by pinpointing and eliminating those uninteresting bytes in the seeds. Picture this: instead of wasting valuable resources on meaningless mutations in large, bloated seeds, DIAR removes the unnecessary bytes, streamlining the entire process.
In this work, we equipped AFL, a popular fuzzer, with DIAR and examined two critical Linux libraries -- Libxml's xmllint, a tool for parsing xml documents, and Binutil's readelf, an essential debugging and security analysis command-line tool used to display detailed information about ELF (Executable and Linkable Format). Our preliminary results show that AFL+DIAR does not only discover new paths more quickly but also achieves higher coverage overall. This work thus showcases how starting with lean and optimized seeds can lead to faster, more comprehensive fuzzing campaigns -- and DIAR helps you find such seeds.

Observability Concepts EVERY Developer Should Know -- DeveloperWeek Europe.pdfPaige Cruz
Monitoring and observability aren’t traditionally found in software curriculums and many of us cobble this knowledge together from whatever vendor or ecosystem we were first introduced to and whatever is a part of your current company’s observability stack.
While the dev and ops silo continues to crumble….many organizations still relegate monitoring & observability as the purview of ops, infra and SRE teams. This is a mistake - achieving a highly observable system requires collaboration up and down the stack.
I, a former op, would like to extend an invitation to all application developers to join the observability party will share these foundational concepts to build on:
