Everything Mobile @ ALA Midwinter 2011
More vendors are developing mobile applications and websites to engage users on the go. Speakers at the conference discussed the importance of understanding users and the context of their mobile experiences to create simple and useful interactions. Effective mobile strategies include social and location-based applications, as well as tools for students like campus maps, computer availability lookups, and reserving study rooms. Rapid ethnography and putting fun back into mobile design were also topics covered.

Open access is becoming the new normal in scholarly communication. OA publishing and archiving venues have been established and OA policies are being implemented, moving from proposals to practice. The discussion around OA has evolved from "why OA?" to "how to implement OA?" and "how to improve OA?". This signals that OA has been adopted more broadly. Challenges remain but OA is playing a central role in the new model of scholarly communication.
Opportunities and Challenges of establishing Open Access Repositories: A case...
National Informatics Centre had established a subject repository in May 2005. It is meant for Medical and Allied Sciences and named as OpenMED@NIC . It has MeSH® based subject categorization and this makes it one of its own kind. Taking OpenMED@NIC as a case – this paper discusses key issues in establishing and maintaining an open access repository. Librarians and information science professionals can play active role in providing access and exposure to quality research and academic content generated in their institutions. Mature and standard open sources softwares are now available for setting up repositories. Libraries can install one of these on existing institutional or library servers to setup repositories. However to ensure better access and faster response time dedicated hardware and reliable connectivity would be required. Librarians and information science professional can play important role in exposing intellectual content produced by their organizations. They can take of various roles like – generating awareness among staff, researchers and students about benefits of self arching in institutional or subject repositories; training them in uploading their articles and other documents in such repositories; acting as meta-data editors and repositories managers. Establishing a repository, administrating and inviting authors to deposit their articles and other works in it is golden opportunity available to librarians and information science professionals. This opportunity should be grabbed with open hands.

Rethinking the Functions of a Journal - some case studies from PLoS by Mark P...
The document discusses re-engineering scientific journals to better serve their functions of registration, certification, dissemination and preservation. It describes PLoS's efforts to make scientific literature openly accessible online through journals like PLoS Biology and PLoS Medicine. PLoS is working to improve the organization of content by topic and impact, speed up authoring and certification through approaches like PLoS Currents, and cover operating costs through growth in submissions and publications. The goal is to make literature more useful to scientists and the public.
Open access impact
Open access to research has been shown to accelerate the research cycle and increase citations and usage of articles. In high-energy physics, researchers have openly shared preprints for decades through arXiv, allowing findings to be rapidly built upon. Analysis of arXiv usage shows the time between preprint posting and citation has significantly decreased as open access has increased. Studies also consistently find that open access articles receive more citations, with some seeing a 600% increase, than articles hidden behind paywalls. However, journal impact factors should not be used to evaluate individual researchers or papers, as they measure prestige rather than use or quality.

Web 2.0 for Biologists–Are any of the current tools worth using?
Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory publishes over 200 books annually on topics related to biology and life sciences. It also publishes 6 monthly peer-reviewed journals and maintains an online database of over 1,100 biology protocols. While some scientists have been reluctant to adopt social media and collaborative tools, proponents argue that blogs and wikis can help raise scientists' profiles and facilitate networking and knowledge sharing if the tools are designed appropriately for the scientific community and culture.

Virtual Research Networks: towards Research 2.0
In the next few years, the further development of social, educational and research networks – with its extensive collaborative possibilities – will be dictating how users will search for, manage and exchange information. The network – evolved by technology – is changing the user's behaviour and that will affect the future of information services. Many envision a possible leading role for libraries in collaboration and community building services.
Users are not only heavily using new tools, but are also creating and shaping their own preferred tools.
Today's students are incorporating Web 2.0 skills in daily life, in their social and learning environments.
Tomorrow's research staff will expect to be able to use their preferred tools and resources within their work environment.
Today's ánd tomorrow's libraries should support students and staff in the learning and research process by integrating library services and resources into their environments.

The first topic is CVE (Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures). I have published CVEs many times. But what exactly is a CVE? I'll provide a basic understanding of CVEs and explain how to detect and handle vulnerabilities in OSS.
Next, let's discuss package managers. Package managers play a critical role in the OSS ecosystem. I'll explain how to manage library dependencies in your application.

The introduction of DLAU and the CCB & CCX licensing model caused quite a stir in the HCL community. As a Notes and Domino customer, you may have faced challenges with unexpected user counts and license costs. You probably have questions on how this new licensing approach works and how to benefit from it. Most importantly, you likely have budget constraints and want to save money where possible.
