TECHNOLOGY INTEGRATION HOW IT CAN HELP YOU BY SCOTT GEE
WHY INTEGRATE TECHNOLOGY INTO EDUCATION? Student Outcomes: Increases performance when interactivity is prominent. Is more effective with multiple technologies (video, computer, telecommunications, etc.). Improves attitude and confidence-especially for "at risk" students. Can increase opportunities for student-constructed learning. Increases student collaboration on projects. Increase mastery of vocational and work force skills. Help prepare students for work when emphasized as a problem solving tool. Significantly improves problem solving skills of learning handicap students. Improves writing skills and attitudes about writing for urban LEP students. Improves writing skills as a result of using telecommunications. http://www.wested.org/techpolicy/refind.html
WHY INTEGRATE TECHNOLOGY INTO EDUCATION? Educator Outcomes: Less directive and more student-centered teaching. Increased emphasis on individualized instruction. More time engaged by teachers advising students. Interest in experimenting with emerging technology. Teacher preferences for multiple technology utilization. Increases administrator and teacher productivity. Increased planning and collaboration with colleagues. Rethinking and revision of curriculum and instructional strategies. Greater participation in school and district restructuring efforts. Business partnerships with schools to support technology. Increased education involvement with community agencies. Increases in teacher and administrator communication with parents. http://www.wested.org/techpolicy/refind.html
Technology in the learning process should be used effectively and appropriately. The goal of integration is to prepare students for the future and teach them new ideas. “Effective tech integration must happen across the curriculum in ways that research shows deepen and enhance the learning process. In particular, it must support four key components of learning: active engagement, participation in groups, frequent interaction and feedback, and connection to real-world experts” (Edutopia Staff, 2008).
MORE REASONS TO INTEGRATE correctly designed, more depth into the content-area curriculum is possible In the information age, there is an intrinsic need to learn technology Students are motivated by technology, thus increasing academic engagement time While working in more depth with the content, students are able to move beyond knowledge and comprehension to application and analysis of information Students learn where to find information in an information rich world Computer skills should not be taught in isolation Students develop computer literacy by applying various computer skills as part of the learning process. (Dockstader, 1999)
It is relatively easy to “place” technology in physical locations. The real question must focus on integration into teaching practices, learning experiences, and the curriculum (Earle, 2002). Educators must continually develop, learn, and grow in their knowledge of educational technologies. This will allow them to pass the knowledge on to their students and fellow staff. This can only be accomplished through successful integration.
