Presented by: Katia Marzall 3.1 Technical guidance on NAPs The session will take the participants through the technical guidance for NAPs, including: NAP guidelines, guiding principles for adaptation under the Convention, and subsequent products developed by the LEG such as the sample NAP process. It will further look detailed aspects on undertaking assessments by going through best available methods and tools for assessing for assessing crop production as an example. Countries will further provide practical experiences in applying the guidance in the formulation of their NAPs.

The intensification of agriculture in Catalunya creates serious concerns over its impact on the physical environment, in terms of deteriorating the air, soils as well as rivers and lakes. It is particularly important to quantify and understand this impact, in order to perceive overall implications and to develop effective strategies to mitigate its effects. In this presentation, I describe our efforts in combining geospatial information and big data analysis in order to measure the environmental impact of agriculture, with a focus on animal manure. The problems and issues of discovering, locating and understanding relevant datasets are discussed, together with suggestions on how data could become more open and easier to reach and understand.
Open data: Showcases from agricultural domain
This document discusses an open data project to create an interactive agricultural information portal. It would aggregate data from trusted sources and allow users to query information on topics like climate, pests, research, exports/imports, seeds, weather and more. Initial data sources proposed include publications, demographic and financial data, statistics, maps, and food safety sources. Additional potential sources are agricultural publications, national-level statistics and geospatial data, and market price streams. The working group will finalize the data components, test SPARQL endpoints, and discuss options for a JavaScript client and federated search across endpoints.

AgriBigCAT: An Online Platform for Estimating the Impact of Livestock Agricul...
Intensive farming has been linked to excessive accumulation of heavy metals and other contaminants on soil, and to significant groundwater pollution with nitrates. Hence, it is necessary to develop a common body of knowledge, so as to allow an effective monitoring of cropping systems, fertilization and water demands, and impacts of climate change, with a focus on the sustainability and the protection of the physical environment. In this presentation, we describe AgriBigCAT, an online software platform that uses geophysical information from various diverse sources, employing geospatial and big data analysis, together with web technologies, in order to estimate the impact of the agricultural sector on the environment. It considers land, water, biodiversity and natural areas requiring protection, such as forests and wetlands. This platform can assist both the farmers' decision-taking processes and the administration planning and policy-making, with the ultimate objective of meeting the challenge of increasing food production at a lower environmental impact. An online application of AgriBigCAT, focusing on the local environmental issues of the agricultural sector of Catalonia, is presented and described, together with some preliminary analysis findings. This presentation has been prepared for the EFITA 2017 Congress in Montpellier.

Because of insufficient accessible arable land, intensive farming has been linked to excessive accumulation of phosphorous, heavy metals, and other soil contaminants, as well as to significant groundwater pollution with nitrate. Deterioration of soil water quality is especially worrying at the bioclimatic Mediterranean area, especially under the current context of climate change. Hence, it is necessary to develop a common body of knowledge, shared at the local and regional levels of the countries involved and affected, so as to allow an effective monitoring of cropping systems, fertilization and water demands, and impacts of climate change, with a focus on the sustainability and the protection of the physical environment.
In this presentation, we describe AgriBigCAT, an online software platform that combines geophysical information from various diverse sources, together with big data analysis, in order to estimate the impact of the agricultural sector on the environment, considering land, water, biodiversity and natural areas requiring protection, such as forests and wetlands. Based on the P-Sphere project, this platform intends to promote more sustainable agriculture, by designing and developing an information and knowledge-based platform, using a big data approach for managing and analyzing a wide range of geospatial and mainstream information, which can be accessible by standard communication technologies such as the internet/web and mobile apps. this platform can also assist both the farmers' decision-taking processes and the administration planning and policy making, with the ultimate objective of meeting the challenge of increasing food production at a lower environmental impact.
Farmer-oriented innovation: outcomes from a first bootcamp
An interdisciplinary team held a bootcamp to develop farmer-oriented innovation projects using open-source technologies like Arduino and Raspberry Pi. Four projects were developed by farmers and students to monitor various agricultural data through IoT sensors and provide alerts or analyses to farmers. The bootcamp achieved its goals of enabling participants to innovate using affordable open-source tools and providing a model for future collaboration between farmers, students, and experts to develop precision agriculture solutions.

An overview of weeding by robots – focus on European solutions
This presentation addressed an overview of the European context, mowing towards data-intensive farming, driven by the agfood sector. It is an invited presentation in the framework of a meeting coordinated by Matthew Cutulle (Clemson University) for a Specialty Crop Research Initiative (SCRI) planning grant about Robotic Weed Control in Specialty Crops. The meeting was organized as a side event during the Southeast Regional Fruit and Vegetable Conference. The presentation provides an overview of European trends on the topic, with a focus on the French institutional perspective aiming at the support and development of agricultural robotics to face the lack of labour and the willingness to phase out glyphosate. The “Mainstreaming food loss reduction initiatives for smallholders in food deficit areas” project, implemented by the Rome-Based UN Agencies (RBA) FAO, IFAD, and WFP, funded by the Government of Switzerland aims to improve food security and income generation opportunities through reduction of food losses in supported food grains and pulses value chains. By mobilizing the individual strengths of the three agencies, the joint project will have significant impact and influence in stimulating Member Countries to take action to reduce food losses and is expected to be a model for future collaboration and up-scaling of RBA collaboration. It will contribute both to the Millennium Development Goal of improving food security and to the Zero Hunger Challenge launched in June 2012 by UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, which includes zero loss or waste of food as one of its main elements.

Marine fisheries, especially tuna fisheries in the Pacific Islands region, are highly vulnerable to climate change. Increased sea surface temperatures and water column stratification are reducing nutrient levels and primary production. Models project that by 2050, 15% of skipjack tuna biomass could move from exclusive economic zones into high seas areas, potentially resulting in losses of over $60 million annually in license revenue for Pacific Island countries. Adaptation strategies are needed to reduce uncertainties, account for potential stock movements between countries' waters, and maintain jurisdiction over migratory tuna stocks to sustain fisheries and economies in the region.
6.1.4 Methodologies for climate rational for adaptation - GCF
This document discusses the Green Climate Fund's investments in climate information and early warning systems. It provides context on increasing climate extremes and disasters. 7.5.2 Regional TEM-A Part 1
Maximizing Synergies in the Climate Finance Architecture discusses challenges faced by countries in coordinating climate finance from various international and domestic sources. It emphasizes that effective complementarity and coherence between climate funds and within countries is needed to help address these challenges. Specifically, it recommends that countries strengthen coordination through their focal points, engage in strategic planning around climate finance as part of their NDCs and NAPs, and coordinate programming to identify financing priorities and opportunities for scaling up and co-financing projects.
7.5.1 Regional TEM-A Part 1
The technical meeting discussed financing adaptation priorities in countries. The Green Climate Fund has approved 26 adaptation project proposals worth $69 million and has 10 more in the final approval stages worth an additional $23 million. The Green Climate Fund portfolio allocates funding equally between adaptation and mitigation projects, with at least 50% of adaptation funds going to vulnerable countries. The meeting involved panels on maximizing climate finance synergies, private sector adaptation investment opportunities, the impact of adaptation investments on resilience and risk reduction, and sectoral roundtables on successful adaptation projects.

2) Achieving LDN requires preventing further land degradation through approaches like avoiding, reducing and reversing degradation to maintain the land's natural capital. National adaptation plans can integrate LDN planning.
3) Over 100 countries have committed to set LDN targets in line with SDG 15.3, showing growing recognition of LDN's ability to balance competing land needs and achieve multiple sustainability objectives.
7.3.5 A system approach to the integration of the agriculture sector in the NAP

The webinar provided an overview of the new OECD (Q)SAR Assessment Framework for evaluating the scientific validity of (Q)SAR models, predictions, and results from multiple predictions. The QAF provides assessment elements for existing principles for evaluating models, as well as new principles for evaluating predictions and results. In addition to the principles, assessment elements, and guidance for evaluating each element, the QAF includes a checklist for reporting assessments.
This new Framework provides regulators with a consistent and transparent approach for reviewing the use of (Q)SAR predictions in a regulatory context and increases the confidence to accept alternative methods for evaluating chemical hazards. The OECD worked closely together with the Istituto Superiore di Sanità (Italy) and the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA), supported by a variety of international experts to develop a checklist of criteria and guidance for evaluating each criterion. The aim of the QAF is to help establish confidence in the use of (Q)SARs in evaluating chemical safety, and was designed to be applicable irrespective of the modelling technique used to build the model, the predicted endpoint, and the intended regulatory purpose.
The webinar provided an overview of the project and presented the main aspects of the framework for assessing models and results based on individual or multiple predictions.
