Riina Vuorikari defended her dissertation on November 13, 2009 in Heerlen, Netherlands. Her research examined how social tagging helps users discover learning resources across language boundaries more efficiently. She hypothesized that user-generated tags in a multilingual system make the system more robust and flexible. Her dissertation included three empirical studies that looked at how tags are used across languages, how resources are shared across contexts, and how tags connect content across contexts. The research concluded that tags help create link structures between resources and users in different languages and countries, opening new ways for improved cross-language discovery of learning resources.

This presentation will dive into the ongoing challenges that academic libraries often face when improving the user experiences of out-of-the-box and open source repositories. Fueling the challenges are the ambiguity and fast-changing nature within the field of digital scholarship and the constant flux of technology platforms and tools. Fortunately, many libraries are paying more attention to users’ motivations and responding by designing user interfaces that support particular formats and contexts. We’ll explore emerging opportunities with repositories in looking at how far libraries should go in providing customizations to balance stakeholder and user needs, and how to plan for users’ ever-shifting expectations.

This presentation will dive into the ongoing challenges that academic libraries often face when improving the user experiences of out-of-the-box and open source repositories. Fueling the challenges are the ambiguity and fast-changing nature within the field of digital scholarship and the constant flux of technology platforms and tools. Fortunately, many libraries are paying more attention to users’ motivations and responding by designing user interfaces that support particular formats and contexts. We’ll explore emerging opportunities with repositories in looking at how far libraries should go in providing customizations to balance stakeholder and user needs, and how to plan for users’ ever-shifting expectations.

MDUSD Budget Update - April 2020
Dr. Lisa Gonzales, Chief Business Officer, presented the budget update at the April 27 school board meeting. She explained that the county health department is advising that a vaccine will not be available for 12-18 months and a second wave of infections is expected in fall 2020. Current savings are seen in utilities, transportation, and some contracts, while spending is up in technology, online resources, and supplies. A 0% cost of living adjustment was imposed, reducing projected revenue by $6.5 million. Cash flow issues were discussed as deferrals impact monthly payments. The budget will be revised based on the state's May and August updates, and planning considers a worse case scenario of additional multi-year reductions totaling $11
