- Today I am briefly going to give an overview of some of the “new technologies” that are in the schools. These are changes from the traditional things we experienced both as students and some of us as parents. It is both exciting and scary to think of where technology will take us in the school (and outside) during the rest of my career! What I am going to show you today are some snapshots of the role technolgy plays in the school. This will include the integrated school and home student information system, web page uses and some teaching tools. Sit back and enjoy the ride!
- Each building has online parent access. This enables parents to be able to view real time/up to date information about their child in regard to their progress, attendance and lunch accounts. It also allows parents to update contact information online without having to contact the office during school hours. This system is all an integration of the student information system, lunch program and teacher gradebooks and attendance reporting. To take advantage of this, all parents need to do is set up a password to log in with through the school office.
- Attendance: Real time attendance report (period by period) is available to middle school and high school parents, with the attendance codes used by the office staff. The report also gives a total report for absences and tardies.
- Parents also have access to real time progress reports and lesson plans for each class at the middle school and high school level. At the elementary level, teachers are able to post their monthly plans/units on the district’s web site. The progress report is a”glance into the teacher’s gradebook”--as everything I have set up as a teacher is availalble for parents to view. As you can see, all classes the student is registered for appears on the screen--you then can go in and choose to look at the progress report, lesson plans or e-mail the teacher.
- This is an example of the progress report. Again--a real time snapshot into the teacher’s gradebook, with assignments, points possible, date and student score. It will also publish a category (tests, daily work, etc.) average as well as an overall average. Students use this tool daily to check on grades/assignments and how they are doing in their classes. As a teacher, I can also add a note to the parent (ex.: did not turn in) to go along with a corresponding score, which will also appear in the gradebook.
- This is an example of the lunch account infomration. Again--a real time snapshot into the family lunch account. I will get a balance as well as transactions to see what my child is eating at school. Lunch noticed are sent out electronically by e-mail.
- The lesson plans module is a place where teachers enter their assignments/plans for the their classes. Students and parents know what is due/what upcoming assignments (including tests and projects) are approaching.
- The district’s web page provides information for students, parents, community members and those outside of the community a wealth of district information. Besides an overall view/posting of events and information, the web site provides: School calendar Daily announcements for the MS and HS Elementary lesson plans Pictures of events Current athletic and extra curricular events Link to the online parent
- The online calendar program has been a great addtion. Again--real time access. You are able to view 2-day, weekly, monthly or even season schedules (by choosing a level). Schools linked into this program (the conference is adopting this)--you can click on the link of where the activity is, and you will get google map directions to the destination!
- Students have a wealth of information available to them. All buildings have networked computers. While the Algona Schools is primarily an Apple environment, computer courses are taught using Microsoft Office. Many classes are now using the basic video and photo editing software to create movies and slideshows, in addition to the basic Powerpoint media presentations (such as this). The photography class at the high schoolis all digital, and student portfolios are a slideshow of the various photos they are required to shoots. HS CAD/design programs. Been to the WW II museum? The DVD video biographies that are available for viewing were created BY STUDENTS in the WW II course taught by Brian Connick Slide shows and video quizzes created by teachers at the elementary. Middle school iMovies/Powerpoints as well as modules in the industrial arts lab. One of the greatest resources is the wealth of databases provided to schools by the Iowa Education Agencies. The Iowa AEA Online provides students and staff with FREE access to the above databases. Each building receives a username and password--this can be used at school or home! Not only can students benefit from the current, up to date information to use in presentations and assignments, but teachers are using it to incorporate video clip examples into their presentations and sources of information to supplement their teaching. Just ask the value to the group I am currently teaching on how to integrate this resource into their curriculum! Courses are offered to class either as license renewal/graduate credit options as well as various “mini” sessions after school. Topics have included Using Microsoft Office, Using the AEA Online, iCan!--a suite of using iMovie, iTunes, iPhoto and iDVD, A using technology to differentiate learning have been some of the “larger courses”. People have also attended mini sessions such as using the gradebook, scanning, specifics in utilizing Microsoft office.
- What is going on year three, we are in the process of creating digital teaching and learning environments in each classroom. What is entailed in these is this: Laptop computer Multimedia projector Document cameras Digital/interactive whiteboards
