How do Chatbots Work? A Guide to Chatbot ArchitectureMaruti Techlabs
We’d all agree that chatbots have been around for some time now. The initial apprehension that people had towards the usability of chatbots has faded away. Chatbots have become more of a necessity now for companies big and small to scale their customer support and automate lead generation.
According to a Facebook survey, more than 50% of consumers choose to buy from a company they can contact via chat. Chatbots are rapidly gaining popularity with both brands and consumers due to their ease of use and reduced wait times.
Intelligent chatbots are already able to understand users’ questions from a given context and react appropriately. Combining immediate response and round-the-clock connectivity makes them an enticing way for brands to connect with their customers.
A chatbot can be defined as a developed program capable of having a discussion/conversation with a human. Any user might, for example, ask the bot a question or make a statement, and the bot would answer or perform an action as necessary. A chatbot communicates similarly to instant messaging.
Bots are made for a specific reason. A store would most likely want chatbot services that assists you in placing an order, while a telecom company will want to create a bot that can address customer service questions.
There are two categories of chatbots: one that works by following a series of rules, and another that uses artificial intelligence.
Chatbot architecture is the spine of the chatbot. The type of architecture for your chatbot depends on various factors like use-case, domain, chatbot type, etc. However, the basic conversation flow remains the same. Let us learn more about the critical components of chatbot architecture.

An Implementation of Voice Assistant for Hospitalitysipij
Voice user interface has gained popularity in the recent years. A chatbot is a machine with the ability to answer automatically through a conversational interface. Instead of using mouse and keyboards as input and screen as output, a chatbot with extra voice user interface feature improve the system and enhance the user experience. A chatbot is considered as one of the most exceptional and promising expressions of human computer interaction. Voice-based chatbots or artificial intelligence (AI) devices transform humancomputer bidirectional interactions that allow users to navigate an interactive voice response (IVR) system with their voice generally using natural language. In this paper, we focus on voice based chatbots for mediating interactions between hotels and guests from both the hospitality technology providers’ and guests’ perspectives. A hotel web application with voice user interface was implemented which provides voice input/output interface to enhance the user experience. Speech recognition component was used to dictate the user voice input to text. Speech synthesis API was used for text to voice conversion. A closed domain question answering (cdQA) Natural Language Processing (NLP) solution was used for processingof query and return the best answer possible.

IDC forecasts that in 2017 spending on cognitive and artificial intelligence (AI) systems will reach $12.5 billion. Some of these systems will be delivered in the form of “conversational interfaces”; what we think of more generally as chatbots or virtual assistants. In fact, Gartner predicts that by 2019, virtual personal assistants “will have changed the way users interact with devices and become universally accepted as part of everyday life.” For this report, Altimeter interviewed 24 enterprise companies, technology innovators, and other experts to gauge the potential risks and opportunities of conversational interfaces. We interviewed industry leaders to identify use cases, design principles, and strategic implications for customer experience, business models, brand strategy, and innovation. Our goal, and a focus of this report, is to help business leaders better understand the implications of conversational interfaces so they can make informed decisions about how to leverage this technology. More important, however, is for businesses to look ahead at the real opportunity: to develop from transactional to conversational relationships, express their brand voice, and become a trusted, indispensable ally to customers.

Effective Application Security in Software Delivery lifecycle using Deployment Firewall and DBOM
The modern software delivery process (or the CI/CD process) includes many tools, distributed teams, open-source code, and cloud platforms. Constant focus on speed to release software to market, along with the traditional slow and manual security checks has caused gaps in continuous security as an important piece in the software supply chain. Today organizations feel more susceptible to external and internal cyber threats due to the vast attack surface in their applications supply chain and the lack of end-to-end governance and risk management.
The software team must secure its software delivery process to avoid vulnerability and security breaches. This needs to be achieved with existing tool chains and without extensive rework of the delivery processes. This talk will present strategies and techniques for providing visibility into the true risk of the existing vulnerabilities, preventing the introduction of security issues in the software, resolving vulnerabilities in production environments quickly, and capturing the deployment bill of materials (DBOM).
Speakers:
Bob Boule
Robert Boule is a technology enthusiast with PASSION for technology and making things work along with a knack for helping others understand how things work. He comes with around 20 years of solution engineering experience in application security, software continuous delivery, and SaaS platforms. He is known for his dynamic presentations in CI/CD and application security integrated in software delivery lifecycle.
Gopinath Rebala
Gopinath Rebala is the CTO of OpsMx, where he has overall responsibility for the machine learning and data processing architectures for Secure Software Delivery. Gopi also has a strong connection with our customers, leading design and architecture for strategic implementations. Gopi is a frequent speaker and well-known leader in continuous delivery and integrating security into software delivery.
"Impact of front-end architecture on development cost", Viktor TurskyiFwdays
I have heard many times that architecture is not important for the front-end. Also, many times I have seen how developers implement features on the front-end just following the standard rules for a framework and think that this is enough to successfully launch the project, and then the project fails. How to prevent this and what approach to choose? I have launched dozens of complex projects and during the talk we will analyze which approaches have worked for me and which have not.

Search and Society: Reimagining Information Access for Radical FuturesBhaskar Mitra
The field of Information retrieval (IR) is currently undergoing a transformative shift, at least partly due to the emerging applications of generative AI to information access. In this talk, we will deliberate on the sociotechnical implications of generative AI for information access. We will argue that there is both a critical necessity and an exciting opportunity for the IR community to re-center our research agendas on societal needs while dismantling the artificial separation between the work on fairness, accountability, transparency, and ethics in IR and the rest of IR research. Instead of adopting a reactionary strategy of trying to mitigate potential social harms from emerging technologies, the community should aim to proactively set the research agenda for the kinds of systems we should build inspired by diverse explicitly stated sociotechnical imaginaries. The sociotechnical imaginaries that underpin the design and development of information access technologies needs to be explicitly articulated, and we need to develop theories of change in context of these diverse perspectives. Our guiding future imaginaries must be informed by other academic fields, such as democratic theory and critical theory, and should be co-developed with social science scholars, legal scholars, civil rights and social justice activists, and artists, among others.

On practical examples, we discuss what cloud/on-premise strategy we may need for applying it to our own infrastructure to get it to work from an enterprise perspective. I want to give an overview about infrastructure requirements and technologies, what could be beneficial or limiting your AI use cases in an enterprise environment. An interactive Demo will give you some insides, what approaches I got already working for real.
2. CHATBOTS
In a nutshell
“The chat space is the last unpolluted space [on your phone]. It´s like a National Park of people´s online experience. Right
now, the way people use chat services, it´s really a good private space that you control.” - Sam Mandel, Developer of bot Poncho
A chatbot is an intelligent agent, powered by rules and/or artificial intelligence, designed to automatically respond to
user requests via conversational interfaces. These new software robots transform the way people interact with the
internet, enabling automation of numerous services, from food orders to customer support and research.
Rules-based chatbots
are as smart as they are
programmed to be, responding only
to specific pre-defined commands.
Machine learning-based chatbots
process and understand natural
language, getting smarter by
learning from conversations. They
interact in a more human way.

3. THE RISE OF CHATBOTS
History & present
1966 ELIZA
Mimicked human conversation by
matching user prompts to pre-
scripted responses.
1950 The Turing Test
First theory that an intelligent
machine could communicate like
a human via text conversation.
1972 PARRY
Advanced version of Eliza that
could simulate a person with
schizophrenia. 1988 JABBERWACKY
One of the first attempts to
simulate human chat and move
to a voice-operated system.1995 A.L.I.C.E.
The ‘Artificial Linguistic Internet
Computer Entity’ bot. It was able
to match rules to human input. 2001 SMARTERCHILD
The first chatbot built for
messaging platforms.
2006 IBM WATSON
2015 ALEXA, CORTANA
2010 SIRI
2012 GOOGLE NOW
Chatbots have a long history, but what’s fostering their development now?
2016 BOTS FOR
MESSENGERS
“People are now spending more time in messaging apps than in social
media and that is a huge turning point. Messaging apps are the
platforms of the future and bots will be how their users access all
sorts of services.” — Peter Rojas, Betaworks
