Vocabulary is a set of familiar words within a
person's language.
Vocabulary, usually developed with age, serves as a useful
and fundamental tool for communication and acquiring
knowledge.
Acquiring an extensive vocabulary is one of the largest
challenges in learning a second language.
What is the need to enrich the Vocabulary of
a student?
1. An extensive vocabulary aids expression and
communication.
2. Vocabulary size has been directly linked to
reading comprehension.
3. Linguistic vocabulary is synonymous with
thinking vocabulary.
4. A person may be judged by others based on
his or her vocabulary.
5. Wilkins (1972) once said, "Without grammar,
very little can be conveyed; without vocabulary,
nothing can be conveyed.”
Tips to Enrich the Vocabulary of the
Students
1. Read - first enrich yourself, newspapers, novels, self
help books are excellent tools to build up your
vocabulary.
2. Encourage them to Read.
3. Look up words that you don’t know- Don’t gloss over.
4. Use new words- definition and example in
context(prefer personal examples)- study vocabulary
in context.
5. Try teaching origin or roots of certain words from
Class VI.

6. Try using self developed word puzzles occasionally.
7. Try using synonyms/alternative words.
Example- This is a ………………………. garden.
8. Utilize Bulletin Board. Pin 5 new words per week.
Discuss them.

10. Use it or lose it: Create sentences with them, say it
out aloud, repeat, ask.
Read the context; make them write the words;
have them figure out what each word means and
write.
