Rate and Comprehension
Smith and Dechant explain the relationship between rate and comprehension in reading
as follows: To discuss the rate of reading adequately, it should be emphasized that it means rate
of comprehending printed or written material. Although comprehension remains of primary
importance and rate has no meaning apart from comprehension, rate of reading is worth
considering.
Roldan has classified reading rate or speed into three based on the reader’s purpose and
the difficulty of the material: study speed, average speed, and fast or selective speed.
1. Study Speed – it is the slowest reading speed and is used for material that requires
careful reading owing the reader’s purpose.
2. Average Speed – it is the one most often applied by adult readers. This rate would be
approximately 250 words per minute and it is normally used for easier textbooks, novels
newspaper and so on. It can be used for most prose material, whether factual descriptive
or narrative.
3. Fast or Selective Speed – this is actually method of reading selectively of reading only
those portion of the material that are necessary for the reader’s purpose reading
selectively is one of the most important skills of the mature. There are two types of
selective reading: skimming and scanning. Skimming is the fastest speed of reader
capable of. The reader skim-reads when he wishes to cover reading material in hurry or to
discern the writer’s core message. Scanning on the other hand is looking over the
material hastily in search of particular bits of information. The best example of scanning
is looking a telephone directory.

6. Activity2 Vocabulary Words
TO A LOST ONE
Angela Manalang-Gloria
I shall haunt you O my lost one, as the twilight
Haunts a re-entangled trail,
And your dreams will linger strangely with the music
Of a phantom lover’s tale,
You shall not forget, for I am past forgetting,
I shall come to you again
With the starlight and the scent of white champacas,
And the melody of rain.
You shall not forget. Dust will peer into your
Window, tragic-eyed and still,
And unbidden, startle you into remembrance
With its hand upon the still.
