INTERACTIVE CLASS SESSION
Learningand Teaching Innovation Center
11
Before class, the instructor works offstage to plan the activities and prepare for interactions. Once in class, the instructor acts
as a stage director so that students are in the spotlight. Students are called on stage to become learning actors and not just
members of a learning audience.
It is helpful to vary the size and the composition of groups
during different interactive activities. Students can work:
Franck Herling
in pairs
Instructors should never forget that the students should
be the most active persons in the classroom.
in teams in a full-class format
WORLD CAFE
Students engage in discussions in small groups to
explore a specific topic, then rotate to another
topic to build on ideas from the other groups; they
can post their contributions on a collaborative
board or write them on a whiteboard
TOURNAMENT AND COMPETITION
Students compete against one another
in small groups by answering questions,
doing an exercise, or completing a task,
and then vote on whose performance
was the best
JIGSAW
Students form groups of experts to
discuss content, then join new teams
in which they share expertise with
other students who have seen a
different part of the content
THINK-PAIR-SHARE
Students do an exercise or think
about a question individually, discuss
their results or ideas with a partner,
and then with the rest of the class
BRAINSTORMING
Students generate and compare ideas about a
topic; they can record and categorize their
responses in a word cloud or on post-it notes
DEBATE AND DISCUSSION
Students defend and compare their opinions
on topics in small groups; a moderator can
facilitate the discussion and a spokesperson
can report to the full class
