The author volunteered at a community center that provides after-school programs for lower-income children. Many of the children came from challenging backgrounds and some had learning disabilities. The author and some firefighters presented a fire safety program for the children. The children seemed to enjoy interacting with the firefighters and learning about fire safety. The experience gave the author insight into the challenges these children face and reinforced the importance of accommodating students' diverse needs and backgrounds.

Helping the community
Amanda Hayes completed a volunteer project at Cocoa High School where she helped exceptional education students volunteer at a local sharing center. The volunteer spent 15 hours over two weeks helping in classrooms, reading to children, and playing with them. The children came from diverse backgrounds and had various needs the Academy supported. The volunteer found the experience impactful and connected what they learned to their special education course.
