Describe how diversity and multiculturalism are approached in your educational setting.
The way that my school approaches diversity and multiculturalism is very unique compare to all the schools on our island. We are very open and welcome a lot of foreign students that come from different parts of Asia, such as, Japan, South Korea, China, Vietnam, Philippines, and Taiwan. Throughout the school year, we host a lot of foreign exchange students. We would pair them with our local students and they will be shadowing them in all their classes. Then, towards the end of the day, our students will have a presentation for them on what kind of culture we have here in Guam and in return they would do the same. It is a lot of work for our faculty and staff, however we really see how beneficial it is for the students during these exchange activities. In addition to that, our school has an activity called “International Week” where each class will choose international countries and will have to learn everything about there culture from the way they dress, their history, and what type of food they eat. On top of that, on the last day of the week, they would try to decorate their classrooms as close as they can get to their country and prepare their famous dishes for the judges to try. I really believe that our school is very accepting and by doing these activities helps our students have a better understanding on who they are sitting with in the classroom.
What benefits can you identify in implementing a multicultural approach to curriculum, instruction, and assessment in your setting?
There are a few benefits that I can identify in implementing a multicultural approach in our school. The first thing I can identify is that it really brings unity among our students. But I also will be the first to admit that not all of them are buying into the culture that we are trying to create in our school. But we are very optimistic that one they will be able to understand what we are trying to do for them. By having these foreign exchange students in our school and having a school wide activity helps our local kids understand more about our Asian students here in our school. By understanding them, our local students can make them feel at home and not make them feel left out in the classroom. The second benefit I see happening is that it also gives our teachers an idea as to which style of teaching strategy they can use to help better communicate with our students. It assists our teachers to connect with them and create a level of trust that leads to better communication with each students.
What challenges do you foresee in implementing a multicultural approach to curriculum, instruction, and assessment in your setting?
The one challenge that I see that we come across when implementing a multicultural approach i ...

CHAPTER I
INTRODUCTION
1. Background
Based on the reply’s letter on last 12 October 2015 from The Department of School
Ministry of Education Brunei Darussalam to Senior Education Project Manager CFBT
Education Services Kiarong Complex Lebuhraya Hassanal Bolkiah, that The Department of
schools has no objection for CFBT to showcase the Bruneian system to teachers from other
ASEAN countries which is part of CFBT’s outreach program called CFBT TET Fellowship.
One of CFBT’s regional partners, Indonesian Education University (UPI) has started to
identify teachers who would be interested in broadening their educational experience through
such reciprocal visits. As a result, UPI has a secondary English Teacher from Banten who
would like to visit Brunei.
English Teacher’s exchange or comparative study is very important for teachers to
compare how to teach English actively and creatively. By doing this program, the teachers can
share their knowledge about teaching learning in the class and also they can learn more about
the profile of the country.
2. Purpose
The purpose of the Teacher’s exchange as follows:
- Research teacher and collaborative teaching.
- Provide information about the workings and the workforce.
- For additional insight into the information and increase knowledge.
- As an exercise to teach English in another country which is English as a second
Language not a foreign one.
- To know more about CFBT’s program in Southeast Asian Nations.
3. The benefits
- As a good experience to develop English skill.
- Train teachers to be able to write in English about trip report.
- Adding collection in their school libraries that support teachers and students’
interest in reading an English Article.

1. Brunei’s Profile
The Sultanate of Brunei's heyday occurred between the 15th and 17th centuries, when its
control extended over coastal areas of northwest Borneo and the southern Philippines.
Brunei subsequently entered a period of decline brought on by internal strife over royal
succession, colonial expansion of European powers, and piracy.
In 1888, Brunei became a British protectorate; independence was achieved in 1984. Brunei
benefits from extensive petroleum and natural gas fields, the source of one of the highest
per capita GDPs in the less developed countries. The same family has now ruled in Brunei
for over six centuries.

2.2 Day 1 activities
On Monday, 2nd November 2015 at 8 am, I visited Sekolah Rendah PAP Besar
Kluster II Negara Brunei Darussalam in Kampung Air. It is Primary School. Mr. Dave and I
came there by boat. I was surprised, there was a school above water. It’s a good and
clean school.
Dave introduced me to Mrs. Yasmin, one of CFBT’s Primary school teachers. She is
Canadian. She’s friendly and kind. The first activity, I observed her teaching in the first class
about 1.5 hours and after 15 minutes break I observed in the second class. The material was
mainly about daily activities from Sunday to Saturday. Mrs. Yasmin used some media in her
teaching such as pictures, laptop, and realias. Finally Mrs. Yasmin gave me a chance to teach
in her children’s class. I taught Mrs. Yasmin’s class by using songs. The first song was
“Head and shoulder” and the second song was “Down and Up”. They looked happy
when we sang together and pointed to their part of the body also practiced some
action verbs. I taught them about vocabularies of Part of Body and some action verbs such as
drink, eat, walk etc. At the end of my teaching, I gave the students a little quiz about
part of body and action verbs. I was very happy because almost 90% they could
answer it. I gave them a little prize that I have prepared before for the students who could
answer my questions correctly, a special bracelet and pen from my province, Banten-
Indonesia.
About 1 pm, the teaching learning was over. The students were ready to go home
and their parents had waited to pick them up. Then, Mrs. Yasmin and I discussed and
evaluated our teaching process that we had just experienced. After that Mrs. Yasmin invited
me to come to the principal of this school. We talked for a while and finally I handed a
special souvenir to the principal of this school.
Finally After handing souvenir to the principal of a primary school in Kampung Air
Brunei Darussalam, Mrs. Yasmin drove me to CFBT’s office in Kiarong Complex Lebuhraya
Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah, Bandar Seri Begawan Brunei Darussalam. It took about a half hour
to get here.

About 2 pm at CFBT’s Office, I met Mr. Dave Laming again and he invited me to
have lunch in front of CFBT’s office. We had a nice lunch. After having lunch, Dave introduced
me to some CFBT’s Staff. They are Jean Kiekopf as CBT EP Manager (Secondary), Sue Trpcic
as Senior EP Manager, DK Siti Nurhafizah Pg Hj Metali as Education Department Secretary,
Sophie Dato Hamid as operations Manager and Kevin Hong as Network Administrator.
Actually, there are some employees here, if I am not mistaken the number of staff is about 40.
I was very happy because I could meet them. And finally Dave took me to Mr. Greg Keaney’s
room as CFBT Country Manager (Top man in CFBT). I felt happy I could meet again with
him because we had ever met in one of his visit to Indonesia on last May 2013. We discussed
about Indonesian’s teachers and my organization, Banten English Foundation (BEF) at that
time.
Mr. Greg Keaney gave me a nice welcome. We talked about mainly English curriculum
in Brunei and Indonesia. I introduced a new curriculum in Indonesia called curriculum 2013.
There are 5 steps in this new curriculum, they are as follows : 1. Observing 2. Questioning 3.
Experimenting 4. Associating and 5. Communicating. It is hoped not teacher oriented, but
student oriented. So the students must be more active than the teachers. Mr. Greg Keaney also
introduced me about CFBT’s programs and some English books, especially some techniques
by using 21 magic moments. This book is very useful and interesting. Jean Kiekopf has
explained to me further before. Mr. Dave gave information to Mr. Greg about my scheduled
visit to Brunei. Mr. Greg hoped it would run well. Finally I handed souvenir to Mr. Greg keaney
as a form of corporation between Indonesia and Brunei Darussalam.
In the afternoon I visited CFBT’s library. There are so many English books, novels,
magazines and some updated articles. I enjoyed reading some books here. Finally, about 4 pm,
Dave and I went back home.

2.3 Day 2 activities
After having a nice breakfast with Dave’s family in their house, On Tuesday 3rd
November 2015 at 8 am. Dave explained to me, there were two activities this day, first came
to secondary school and second visited one of tourism place in Brunei, Tasek Merimbun
Heritage Park (a kind of jungle) and Dave lent me a pair of sport shoes and a little towel. He is
so kind to me.
Mr. Dave drove me to visit Secondary School PTEM Meragang (lower and upper sixth),
this is a large and nice school. Well, on the way I saw many trees on the left and right side,
some good mosques and not so many cars like in Indonesia. So I could see beautiful
sightseeing. Arriving at Secondary School PTEM Meragang, Dave introduced me to Mr. Chris
Rockwell, CFBT’s Secondary School teacher. He is Australian. He’s very nice and friendly
person. Before going to observe Chris’ class, Chris invited me to look around this school. First,
we visited canteen. I was so surprised, the students need no pay, all are free. I think free
payment is the only school fee. And I was more surprised the students also get pocket money
every month. How lucky Bruneian Students! The Sultan here pays more attention to the
education. The rich country cause of abundant natural resources, especially the greatest oil
production in Southeast Asian and also gets rank 5 in the richest country in the world. Then
Chris showed me some nice classrooms, Auditorium and sport centre.
Starting at 9.30 Am, I observed Chris’ Class. The material was about how to make
Bulletin in English. The result of this bulletin they have made, can be sent to the daily
magazine/newspaper called The Meragang Bulletin. The students looked enthusiasts to Chris
teaching. One thing I admired to the students was they understood what Chris said in English.
All explanation was in English. I think their English foundation had been very strong since
they studied in Primary school. English is a second language here not foreign anymore.
9
14. Chris’ class ended at 1 pm, after finishing his class, he drove me to have lunch in a
restaurant. We enjoyed our lunch. Then I was invited to his house. We arrived there at 2.30
pm. I saw some cats in his house, Chris is an animal lover. He’s adventurer man. After a little
talk, Mr. Bud Chapman one of CFBT’s employees in a welfare section came to pick me up to
go to one of tourism place in Brunei, Tasek Merimbun Heritage Park (a kind of jungle). I was
so happy I had a chance to go there because I would enjoy Brunei Panorama and relaxed for a
while.
Bud drove me to Tasek Merimbun Heritage Park about 3 pm. It took one hour to arrive
here. I saw a beautiful natural sightseeing in this jungle. There were some people here. The
place was quiet. First, we signed the visitor book without a guard, and I was surprised because
no payment here. If I compared to my country, Indonesia, it’s so different with crowded people
in a tourism place and all are in charge or with payment.
Bud and I went around in this jungle. I saw some animal preserved here such as frog,
butterfly and many others. I also saw some people went fishing here in the lake, and there’s a
sign to be careful cause of dangerous crocodile in that lake.
It had been almost one hour we were in this jungle, actually I felt tired walking, but
Bud still looked fresh although his age is about 50 years. He’s also adventurer man. He said
that he had ever been to many countries. We talked a lot during this journey about Bruneians.
I got more information from him. I made a conclusion that my country is still left behind about
the salary or payment, may be my country is more populous. Finally, about 5.30 pm we went
back home. It’s a wonderful experience!

17. 2.4 Day 3 activities
As usual after having a nice breakfast with Dave, his wife Mrs. Ita and his daughter
Ann Mary in their house, On Wednesday 4th November 2015 at 8 am. Dave explained to me,
there were two activities this day, in the morning I had to visit a secondary school in Temburong
and in the afternoon attended Briefing on CFBT’s Project in CFBT’s office.
Mr. Dave drove me to visit Secondary School in Temburong called Sultan Hassan
(lower and upper sixth). Before I reached there, I had to cross the river by speed boat because
it is a border between Brunei Darussalam and Malaysia. Dave bought a ticket in Ulu-ulu
National Park Resort Temburong-Brunei Darussalam. The adult ticket price for speedboat is
$6.00 or Rp.58.800,- and for the kid one is $3.00 or Rp.29.400,- . About 9.30 am I left for the
Sultan Hassan Secondary School. It took 1 hour by speedboat. I enjoyed the sightseeing during
the journey. I arrived there about 10.30 am, and Mrs. Arlene Walshe, one of CFBT’s Teacher.
She’s from New Zealand and she had been ready to pick me up.
In Sultan Hassan School, Mrs. Arlene Walshe introduced me to the teachers here and
also I was introduced to the Principal of this school, Mr. Yusuf B. Hj. Mahmud and the
curriculum section Mr. Md. Zulnazri Donglah. We talked a lot, especially about education in
Indonesia and Brunei Darussalam. Unfortunately, I couldn’t observe the teaching learning here
because the Examination in Progress. But Mr. Md. Zulnazri Donglah invited me to look around
this school instead. At first Mr. Md. Zulnazri Donglah and I saw staff room. Some rooms were
in repairment. Then we saw some classrooms and sport fields. Finally, he showed me some
toilets (“Tandas” in Brunei Language) and he said that this school had won the competition as
the cleanest toilet in Temburong School.
About 12 pm, I shared about curriculum and I gave a CD about Indonesian Curriculum
2013, I also explained at glance about teaching steps in Indonesia and at 12.30 we had lunch
together with Mr. Md. Zulnazri Donglah and Mrs. Arlene Walshe. Well, here I got a nice drink
called Teh Tarik (special drink from Brunei).
Finally, I gave a souvenir to the Principal of this school, Mr. Yusuf B. Hj. Mahmud. He
looked happy with my visit. Sometimes we talked in Bahasa Melayu and Indonesia because
Mr. Yusup has ever lived in Kalimantan Island, Indonesia. And about 1 pm, Mrs. Arlene
Walshe took me to the port. She paid the ticket for me to go back home.
About 2 pm, I arrived in Ulu-ulu National Park Resort Temburong-Brunei Darussalam.
Mr. Dave Laming picked me up to go back to CFBT’s office. Before we had a briefing, Dave
asked me to attend the Melayu language Course. I straight attended that class, Dave introduced
me to Melayu’s teacher. I followed her class for about a half hour. The material was about
telling the date and the day in the Bruneian School Education Agenda. I think Melayu and
Indonesian is not so different, the different thing is only an accent. Finishing that course, Dave
asked me to have a Briefing on CFBT’s Project with one of CFBT’s Staff (sorry, I forget his
name, someone who has ever been to Palembang) and Mrs. Jean Kifkopf. It’s about REAL
Project/English as an ASEAN Research Project. CFBTs are going to have an English Program
in Indonesia (Makassar, Bali and Palembang) about March or April 2016. Hopefully CFBT
invites me to join this program later. Well, in this briefing I also explained new curriculum
2013 from Indonesia by using an Infocus / slide in detail by using a software called “Autoplay
Media Studio 8”. There are 5 steps in teaching learning process, namely observing, questioning,
experimenting/collecting data, associating and communicating. Finally, Dave and I went back
home at 5 pm. I felt so tired but nice experience.

2.5 Day 4 activities
I got up earlier today cause of the last activities in Brunei. I tried to make a trip report
draft. At 6.30 am, Ann Mary (Dave’s daughter) knocked at the door to invite me to eat breakfast
with her family. We had nice breakfast together with Corn Flakes, bread and milk. After
finishing the breakfast, Dave said to me there would be two activities today. First in the
morning I had to visit Mr. Chris Rockwell again in Secondary School PTEM Meragang (lower
and upper sixth) and second in the afternoon I had to attend IT program in CFBT.
16
21. At 7 am, Dave drove me to Secondary School PTEM Meragang (lower and upper sixth).
We arrived there at 7.30 am. Actually Dave had the flu today, but he could accompany me to
this school. When I got into that school, I was so surprised and felt proud of Brunei education
rule. Dave asked me to stop walking when we heard Brunei National Anthem, It took about 4
minutes, because after hearing the song of Brunei National Anthem, straight to pray together
guided by the recorded surrounding the building. Finishing this activity, Dave accompanied
me to Mr. Chris Rockwell’s room.
Chris introduced me to Mrs. Ann Baillie (British teacher from CFBT), Ms. Chen and
Ms. Meimi (Bruneian teachers). Chris said to me that there would be 4 activities. First, I had
to observe and collaborate in Mrs. Ann Baillie’s class. Second observed Ms. Chen’s class, third
observed Ms. Memie’s class and the last I had to teach in Mr. Chris Rockwell.
At 8 am, I taught with Mrs. Ann Bailie collaboratively in lower sixth. The material was
about the IGCSE oral practice such as Movies Discussion, asking about opinion, like or dislike.
In here the students had to practice their English speaking skill. Ms. Ann Bailie explained first
the way how to do the speaking tasks while she distributed the sheet/paper. She is a clever
teacher how to make students more active. I tried to converse with the students. I was so
surprised because their English is very fluent. I enjoyed this class. We finished teaching 9. 15
am.
After 15 minutes break, I straight observed Ms. Chen’s class. The material was about
Debate. The topic is about Cigarette/smoking. She divided into two groups, Pro Group and
Cons one. It’s interactive class. Ms. Chen is an attractive teacher in guiding students to be
active in giving a comment in English. I finished observing Ms. Chen’s class at 10.30 am.
About 10.45 Mr. Chris Rockwell asked me to observe Ms. Memie’s class. The material
was about Drama called “a man for all seasons”. It’s so wonderful for me how the secondary
school could study and comprehended a kind of Drama. In Indonesia Drama is taught to
university students. So, the mastery of vocabulary in Brunei is really on a high level. I enjoyed
Ms. Memie’s class.
The last activity was I taught Mr. Chris’ Class. The material was about grammar. The
difference between the use of “to be going to and will”. I had prepared that material before, so
I tried to make students to be more active by using a game. Before going to my material, I
played the updated Indonesian video about 10 minutes. They enjoyed the Indonesian film. Then
I explained the difference between “to be going to and will” by asking questions like, what are
you going to do after passing from this school?, What will you do if you see someone gets an
accident in front of you? And then I played the game using a PowerPoint game about “to be
going to and will quiz” . I think it’s a good game so the students were able to speak by that
quiz. I finished teaching at about 1 pm. Then Mr. Chris and I went to the Principal of this
School. I gave her souvenir as a form of friendship or a proof of my visit.
About 1.15 pm Mr. Chris invited me to have lunch in the shopping mall called Season
Restaurant. Chris showed me a shopping centre in Brunei. It’s so big and nice one. We ate
lunch together here. Then I had a chance to buy two T-Shirts and 5 special keys from Brunei.
Unfortunately, we had a little time because I had to be back in CFBT’s office at 3 pm. Finally,
Chris drove me to CFBT’s Office.
17
22. Arriving at CFBT’s office, according to Dave’s instruction before I straight attended IT
program from CFBT. The material was about how to analyze item test at school. The instructor
is very expert in operating the computer. It’s very useful for me to implement in my country. I
can learn more about IT program. We finished studying IT program about 4.30 pm. Finally,
Dave picked me up to go back home about 5 pm. Tiring job today, but I really enjoyed it.
Arriving at home stay at 5.30 pm, Dave gave me some English books plus CDs from CFBT.
Wow! I think I am a very lucky man, I got many interesting and useful books. Many thanks to
CFBT. Finally, I did some packing to get ready home to Indonesia tomorrow.

26. CHAPTER III
CLOSING
1. CONCLUSION
Based on the trip report in the previous section can be made the following conclusion :
1. Brunei Darussalam has abundant natural resource especially in oil production and it
makes a prosperous community. Sultan really works for the people welfare. Many
things in some sections are free, like education and health.
2. Brunei Darussalam has a good commitment to education, especially in English teaching
from primary to secondary school. Many native speakers from CFBT directly teach
English in the class. So English is not foreign language anymore, but has been a second
language.
3. Curriculum which is used based on strong Islam religion. It makes the students are very
disciplined. Many mosques and beautiful palaces in Brunei Darussalam.
4. Because of rare population, not more than six hundred and fifty thousand people, many
trees, the quiet streets. It makes Brunei Darussalam really in peaceful. It’s suitable with
the meaning of “Darussalam = peaceful”.
2. ADVICE
2.1) For Teachers
1. Teachers in Indonesia, especially English teachers should have more chances to be able
to go abroad through Teacher’s Exchange Program from government in order to make
teachers know more about education in another country because we are aware that
English is still a foreign language. So the teachers must be active to find new
information about this program.
2. Teachers who have ever been to another country must practise good things from their
comparative study result of the teaching learning program in the class. It can be as
supplementary/enrichments or implemented into New Curriculum in Indonesia.
3. Teachers are expected not only to utilize Teacher’s Exchange as a means of recreation,
but also as a learning tool to add insight.
2.2) For students
1. Through Teacher’s Exchange Program, it can be one of motivation for students in
Indonesia to learn more about another country, especially in English program or the
profile of the country.
2. Students are expected from now on always increase their English communication skill
with their friends or an English teacher’s guidance that one day they can go abroad to
practice it well.
3. Students are advised to write their activities in English starting from the diary or the
school tasks that their English writing skill will be longer and better.

8. Rohadi’s CV
This is an advertisement which was advertised from BEF to CFBT
Rohadi, M. Pd.
English teacher in Indonesia Senior High School, Banten Province
Rohadi, M. Pd. Graduated from his master (S2 Program) in 2007 from Pakuan University,
Bogor - Indonesia. He was born on April 5th,1968. He has been working as an English Teacher
since 2002 at one of the Senior High School in Indonesia. He enjoys teaching English in class
and he likes making a friend with everyone. He is a leader in English Organization (Senior
High School English Forum). One of his activities on April 2012 he invited Ms. Robyn Maree
Elmi as an Educational Consultant of Brunei Darussalam from Australia to be a keynote
speaker in one day English Seminar with the theme : “ Teaching English as a foreign
Language ”.
In 2012 he was also appointed as an Indonesia, Banten Province of English Foundation (BEF)
Leader, a kind of foundation which is bigger than Senior High School English Forum with the
slogan “Providing professional English Services”. The main purpose of this organization is to
help English teachers in Indonesia, especially in Banten Province-Indonesia in the teaching
English Program at class and holds English Seminars and some competitions. One of his
activities, Banten English Foundation had a good opportunity discussed about BEF
introduction to CFBT with Mr. Dr. Greg Keaney (Country Manager Centre for British
Teachers/CFBT) from Australia on May 2013 in one of his visit to Indonesia.
Now he is trying to develop his organization in a comparative study to get a new experience,
especially in the English teaching learning program. He is aware that English is still as a
foreign language not a second language in his country. So he must study a lot about English
language progress/development in another country.
