But that’s impossible! Said little Charlie, staring
at his grandfather. Of course it’s impossible!
Cried Grandpa Joe. It’s completely absurd! But
Mr Willy Wonka has done it! Quite right! The
others agreed, nodding their heads. Mr Wonka
has done it.

The one I want to see is Veruca Salt!

She’s the girl whose father bought
up half a million chocolate bars and
then made the workers in his peanut

There’s Violet Beauregarde! He heard
someone shout. That’s her all right! I can
remember her face from the newspapers! And
you know what? Somebody else shouted
back. She’s still chewing that dreadful old
piece of gum she’s had in for three months!

7. The Teavee household, said Mr Bucket, going
on with his reading, was crammed, like all the
others, with excited visitors when our reporters
arrived, but young Mike Teavee… seemed
extremely annoyed by the whole business.

Drama Activity
10. Freeze Frame
Discuss how each child reacts to finding the Golden Ticket.
Put together a still, silent image, showing how they feel when they
first see their Golden Ticket and realise they will be visiting the
chocolate factory.
Look back at the first few chapters of the book.
Decide who will take on the role of Charlie and the other children.
Think carefully about position, body shape and facial expression.
11. Freeze Frame
Remember how different the characters are…
For example, Charlie might be delighted, whereas Veruca
Salt demands and expects a ticket to appear!
Top Tip!
A freeze frame is like a photo or a
paused film. The action in the
adventure stands still!
12. Remember:
Write physical
characteristics around
the outside and ideas
about thoughts and
feelings on the inside
Role on the Wall
Small Group Work
Use the ideas from your freeze frame to
create a detailed character sketch. Extra
Challenge!
Augustus Gloop!
Augustus Gloop!
The great big greedy
nincompoop!
Write your own
funny song about
your character.
Use the role on the wall
template to create your
character.
13. Heated Debate!
In Chapter 29 Mike Teavee becomes the final child to meet a sticky end
in the chocolate factory. Augustus Gloop, Violet Beauregarde and Veruca
Salt all behave badly in the story and are punished accordingly. The
Oompa Loompas then sing about their shortcomings.
Who is the most badly behaved?
What do you think?
‘You mean you’re the only one left?’ Mr Wonka said,
pretending to be surprised.
15. Plenary
Think carefully about all the different activities we
have used to help us understand Charlie and the
Chocolate factory.
Choose the activity that was
most helpful for you.
Give 3 good reasons why it
helped you with your
learning.
