The document describes various environmental initiatives undertaken by students and teachers at several schools. The initiatives include reducing plastic waste by using reusable water bottles and lunch boxes, recycling materials like paper, batteries, and cooking oil, planting trees, and raising awareness about issues like water conservation. Students created artworks and games to promote their campaigns and encourage others to adopt more sustainable habits.
1. Students from several schools in Cyprus and Poland describe initiatives they have undertaken to develop more environmentally friendly habits. These include refusing single-use plastics, recycling materials, reducing food waste, planting trees, and choosing active transportation.
2. Specific projects mentioned include collecting plastic bottles, oils, batteries, and eggshells for recycling, as well as making crafts from plastic cups and cutting face mask strings before disposal.
3. Schools have also started competitions to encourage using reusable lunch boxes and conserving water. Winners receive rewards like field trips for their efforts.
Methane is a potent greenhouse gas produced by livestock such as cows. Cows produce methane through digestion and waste. During digestion, bacteria in the rumen break down plant material and produce methane as a byproduct. Scientists are researching ways to reduce methane production in cows, such as changing their diets by adding seaweed or breeding cows with less methane-producing bacteria. Reducing meat and dairy consumption can also help lower methane emissions from the livestock industry.
The document discusses the importance of bees and recommendations for saving them. Students in a Greek primary school learned about the sudden disappearance of honey bees. They watched a presentation to understand how important bees are to the environment by pollinating plants and providing honey, vegetables, and fruits. The document provides recommendations from other primary schools to help bees by planting bee-friendly flowers; building bee houses; reducing pesticide and chemical use; not harming bees; and educating others about the problem and how to help.
The document discusses air pollution caused by factors like burning fossil fuels for heating, factories, and vehicle emissions. It notes air pollution can cause lung diseases and health issues. Some solutions proposed include using electric heating and vehicles, riding bikes instead of driving, planting more trees, and investing in pollution filters for chimneys and factories. Students from other schools recommend using public transportation, electric cars, bikes, and generating their own clean electricity.
This document discusses ways to reduce water waste at school and at home. It provides recommendations such as opening the water tap little when washing hands, taking showers instead of baths, using a watering can instead of a hose to water plants, and sharing concerns about water waste with classmates by posting signs. Other schools recommend closing the water when brushing teeth, washing dishes with minimum water, washing cars with only a pot of water, taking short showers, and watering plants at specific times to reduce evaporation.
Forest fires can be caused by both natural and human factors. During the summer of 2021 in Greece, over 2 million acres of forest burned in large fires caused by high temperatures and low humidity. This destroyed homes, killed many animals, and left some people homeless. Solutions proposed include hiring more forest rangers, enforcing strict penalties for arson, being careful with fire sources, and volunteering to help prevent and fight fires.
The document discusses environmental waste management and the importance of proper waste disposal. It provides an overview of waste management, including collection, transport, treatment and disposal of waste without polluting the environment. The document also discusses the big problems related to waste in Cyprus and some practices that can be adopted to better manage waste, such as recycling, reusing materials, and organizing community clean-up events. Suggestions are made to increase recycling and expand collection points to further reduce waste.
Choirokoitia is an archaeological site on Cyprus dating back to the Neolithic age that has been listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1998. It is one of the most important and best preserved prehistoric sites in the eastern Mediterranean, showing evidence of an organized, communal settlement surrounded by fortifications from the Neolithic aceramic period around 7,000 BC. The site provides insight into one of over 20 similar early settlements found across Cyprus from this era.
The Cyprus Archaeological Museum houses artifacts discovered during excavations on Cyprus. It contains the world's most extensive collection of Cypriot antiquities. While only items found on Cyprus are displayed, many artifacts were also illegally excavated and smuggled off the island in the past by collectors. The museum remains the primary collection of Cypriot artifacts before independence in 1960, though some pieces have been decentralized to local museums. However, the collection has outgrown the museum's space, so relocation to a larger new site or creation of a new museum has been discussed.
Ancient Kourion was visited by a group of students to study and present on its historical sites. The archaeological site contained a 2nd century BC theater that was rebuilt and converted into an arena in the 3rd century AD to hold 3,500 people for shows and animal fights. Other structures included a late 2nd century Roman market, public bathrooms from the 4th century AD that had hot and cold running water and locker rooms, and two wealthy homes from the 3rd-5th centuries AD containing ornate floor mosaics.
