Lewis Dunn will produce a photo shoot for a music magazine featuring portrait photos of models. He plans to take 50 high quality portraits using different techniques, exploring lighting and angles both indoors and outdoors depending on weather. The 10 best photos will be selected to represent different styles in the magazine. He is inspired by the contrasting black and white and bright color photos used in similar magazines and photographers like Ransom Rockwood and Alex Koloskov. Lewis will use a Nikon D3100 camera capable of 1080p video and varying ISO and shutter speeds to capture quality portraits considering lighting, depth of field, and avoiding distractions. The shoot may take place indoors or outside depending on the vibe of the music magazine

1. Unit 57: Photography and Photographic Practise
Project Proposal
(P2, P3, M2, M3, D2, D3)
Candidate
name: Lewis
Dunn
Theme: Music Magazine Portrait Photo Shoot
Predicted final outcome
What are you going to produce (you need to choose 10 final images)
I will produce an overall minimum of 50 high quality portrait shots during my
photo shoot, exploring the different techniques in portrait photography I will
produce different photos taken to perfection. I will use 2 models during my
shoot which I will experiment and take various shots from different angles
testing my photography abilities. The shoot will be shot indoors using artificial
lighting although I may try being a little different by shooting outside
depending on the weather at that time. The genre of magazine I am basing
my photos around will be shot using bright complimentary colours so the
photos will be eye catching and stand out, I also might shoot a few shots in
black and white to vary my photography. When finalized my 50 shots I will
then choose 10 which I will later be using in my magazine.
Reasons for selection of theme (including inspiration from the work of others)
Why you want to take these images
Which photographers produce similar images you like – find 3
2. I like the photography used in these Vibe magazines for many reasons, first
reason is the use of the black and white artist mixed with the bright coloured
backgrounds, it contrasts the image and stands out which is good for a
magazine. The format of the magazines aren’t so complex with the title
etc… basic font and colour placed large at the top of the magazine.
Ransom J Rockwood photography:
I think these portrait photos will influence my work because they are taken
from angles which would be used in magazines, and when taking my
photos I will use angles and colours just like the ones used in these photos.
Comparing the photography used in these 3 portrait photos and the
magazine photos above they are a lot alike which shows that this style of
photography is a good use in magazines.

3. Alex Koloskov photography influences my work in portrait photography for
my magazine because he uses a lot of colour in his shots which I like and
would want to do a lot more in my work. I like how he uses different
coloured lights to bring more bright light into each shot which gives a good
effect in my opinion.

The photo imaging equipment and medium that will be used and why
Use your camera… plus whatever else you think put some info about your
camera
The camera I will be using for shooting my portrait shoots will be a Nikon
D3100 this camera involves:
14.2 megapixels
Sensor size and type: 23.1 x 15.4 mm CMOS
HD video: Full HD 1080p
ISO Speed Range: 100-3200
This camera will work well as it shoots in 1080p which is a good high quality
camera also it shoots from both low ISO speeds and high ISO speeds so I
can vary from the two when shooting in darker conditions when trying to
make my shots a little better. I also could use a tripod when Im focusing
more on shooting the head area, this will benefit because the tripod can be
adjusted to the perfect head level and because its stabilised I can shoot on
a higher shutter speed without worrying about camera blur. It will also help
by keeping the same height in head level needed when shooting so I
wouldn’t have to guess when coming to shoot the next photo.
4. Techniques that will be used and how they will help convey the visual
message
E.g. framing, styles, shutter speeds, etc
When putting the technical terms into shooting I will have to consider the
right lighting/ brightness to make the picture as good as it could be. Thinking
about the ISO it depends how much natural and artificial light I use during
the shoot, if there isn’t much and it makes the shot hard to see I will either
increase or decrease the ISO until the brightness is perfect. The same applies
to shutter speed it all depends on how much light there is contained in the
room at that moment of time if its to dark and I need there to be a little
more light to brighten the shot I could increase the shutter to longer time so
more light will be captured making the shot easier to see. Depth of field will
be highly considered when shooting for example if im shooting outside and
there is to much distraction in the background or objects/people which
could potentially be ruining the shot then I could blur out the back ground
so the shot will be more intended on the model and reduce the risk of
distraction or things that could be letting the shot down.
Location of shoot
A plain one
coloured
room/studio,
Outside, field or
street
(Give a bit of info about the type of music magazine
your images will be used for and what location(s) you
intend to shoot your portraits and why.
