Task 14Research into youth subcultures and current fashion for ideas about the look and styling of your own video and the band. Upload your research to your Ning.
Current trends. There are many different trends and different fashions in the world of today. Youth sub cultures are changing all the time. You can range from a ‘chav’ to an ‘emo’ and people usually where clothes to reflect what type of music they like. If I was to be very stereotypical I would say all emo’s where skinny jeans and all chav’s where tracksuits. But of course there is more to it than that.
The Howl Project’s genre of music.Their genre of music is mainly Indie but I think a few if their songs have an element of punk in them. In their own words they sound like ‘a grudge fight between Wire and KC and the Sunshine Band in Patti Smith’s Loft’. I would like the video styling and fashion too reflect their personal tastes, the music and the message of the song.
Youth subcultures. A youth subculture is a youth-based subculture with distinct styles, behaviours, and interests. According to subculture theorists such as Dick Hebdige, members of a subculture often signal their membership by making distinctive and symbolic tangible choices in, for example, clothing styles, hairstyles and footwear. However, intangible elements, such as common interests, dialects and slang, music genres and gathering places can also be an important factor. Youth subcultures offer participants an identity outside of that ascribed by social institutions such as family, work, home and school.
Pictures of indie subculture and fashion.
Styling of our music videoThe look of our video is going to be quite old fashioned and black and white in some shots. We will listen very carefully to see if there is a message to the song.We will make it very underground and urban. The location will probably be a car park or an in industrial site. We will have chats with the band to see if they would like any input with the styling and look.As far as fashion, it will probably be quite casual (Doc martins, jeans etc). We will look at lots of pictures on the internet and current indie magazines to get a flavour of the youth indie culture.
