Executive John Wood.
About John Wood:
John Wood was born in January 1964, in Hartford, Connecticut, where he spent his early
childhood. His family later settled in Athens, Pennsylvania, where he attended high
school. He holds a bachelor's degree from the University of Colorado, and a master's
degree in business administration from the Kellogg Graduate School of
Management at Northwestern University.
From 1991-1999, John Wood worked as an executive for Microsoft. His positions included
Director of Marketing for Australia, Director of Marketing for the Asia-Pacific region and
Director of Business Development for Greater China.
3. Wood officially co-founded Room to Read in 2001 with Dinesh
Shrestha and Erin Ganju. Currently operating in ten countries
throughout Asia and Africa
(Bangladesh, Cambodia, India, Laos, Nepal, South Africa, Sri
Lanka, Tanzania, Vietnamand Zambia) the organization focuses on
increasing literacy and gender equality in education in developing
countries. Its programs develop literacy skills and a habit of reading
among primary school children, and support girls to complete
secondary school with the relevant life skills to succeed in school and
beyond.
John has received countless honors for his work, including recognition
as a "Young Global Leader" by the World Economic Forum and as one
of Time Magazine's "Asian Heroes." He has also been selected as a
"Young Global Leader" by the World Economic Forum and is a Henry
Crown Fellow at the Aspen Institute
4. History
John Wood had taken a vacation from his work during 1998, when he
trekked through the Himalayas, while trekking, he had met a resource
director for the schools in the Annapurna Circuit of Nepal.
Which whom he visited a primary school with, which had 450 children
but with only a handful of books.
Upon seeing Wood’s reaction to the situation, the headmaster of the
school suggested for Woods to someday return with books, in which he
did the following year.
Between the time he went and returned, he had emailed his friends and
families to request for the donation of books, in which he had collected
3,000 in total, bringing them back to the schools in the Himalayas.
5. Impacts
Through Room to Read, John Woods was able to established over 12,500
libraries, donated and published 10 million books, built over 1,500
schools, and supported more than 13,500 girls so they can graduate from
secondary school with the skills they need to succeed in 11 years.
In total, Room to Read has impacted the lives of over 6 million children.
