Kindergarten
Pointers Run Elementary
Welcome!
We are looking forward to working
with you and your child this year.
Arrival at School
Name tags
Bus numbers
Arrive between 9:10-9:25
Assistants will help them find their classroom
Children will unpack their daily folder
Writing Workshop
Children will learn to illustrate and write in a daily
journal. Beginning writers will use beginning
letters to label their drawings, and will move to
writing sentences by the end of the year.
Math
We follow the Common Core Standards. You
can find them on the Howard County
Website. We will teach each child through
games and hands on activities.
Recess and Lunch
The children have 30 minutes of recess and 30 minutes
of lunch. Don’t worry if they don’t eat much in the
beginning. A familiar lunch from home the first few
weeks is easiest for most. Lunch menus are available
online. You can prepay or send the money in a ziplock
bag with your child’s name.
Reading
Children will have daily experiences with listening,
speaking, writing, and reading. We assess each
student frequently and provide appropriate
challenges.
Science and Engineering
Students will learn and explore the
roles of scientists and engineers in
solving real world problems.
Social Studies
Social Studies is integrated with Language
Arts in Kindergarten. We will learn about
Building community, famous Americans,
Patriotic symbols, and beginning map skills.
Snack
Please send a daily snack with your child.
They have a short time to eat a healthy
snack in the afternoon. No spoons or
drinks, please!
Specials
Kindergarten students will have PE (wear
sneakers!), music, art (wear a smock!), media, and
Technology each week.
Self Selected Centers
Students will have time to choose their own
activities. They will practice speaking, sharing,
cooperation, taking turns, creating, acting out,
and many more skills at this time.
Dismissal
At 3:45, we help the children find their bus, car,
after care, or parent. If you want your child to go
home a different way, we need a (big) note in
their folder. If it is unplanned, just call the
school. Do not email dismissal information!
