Introduction
• Systematic was established in 1985 and
employs more than 500 people worldwide
with offices in Denmark, Finland, USA and the
UK. It is an independent software and systems
company focusing on complex and critical IT
solutions within information and
communication systems. Often these systems
are mission critical with high demands on
reliability, safety, accuracy and usability.

DEFINITION OF CAPABILITY MATURITY
MODEL (CMMI)
• The Capability Maturity Model Integration, or
CMMI, is a process model that provides a clear
definition of what an organization should do
to promote behaviors that lead to improved
performance. With five “Maturity Levels” or
three “Capability Levels,” the CMMI defines
the most important elements that are
required to build great products, or deliver
great services, and wraps them all up in a
comprehensive model.
What is the Maturity Model
• A maturity level is a well-defined evolutionary plateau toward achieving a mature
software process. Each maturity level provides a layer in the foundation for
continuous process improvement.
• In CMMI models with a staged representation, there are five maturity levels
designated by the numbers 1 through 5
• Initial
• Managed
• Defined
• Quantitatively Managed
• Optimizing

The Four Principal Functions of CMMI
• 1: Assessments Serve as Analytical Tools
Assessments do not simply tell you the way one part of
an organization works on its own. Instead they explain
the way a part of the organization works within an
organizational structure and an organizational culture,
based on a sophisticated understanding of how the
software development cycle works in the most successful
companies around the world. An assessment's account of
how an organization works is thus not merely descriptive.
Assessment analysis depends on criteria established by
a reference model.
2: Assessments Function as Fulcrums of Positive Change
Assessments stimulate technical and organizational cultures to evolve. Seeing your
organization as it really is can feel a little like being punched in the stomach. Managers
always think their companies are better than they really are. No one is ever prepared
for cold truth. But the shock of an assessment has priceless value because it can
initiate momentum toward positive change. It dissolves complacency and enables staff
to take a fresh look at how a company can be improved.
3: Assessments Transform Organizations by the Way They Work
When assessments work properly, the medium becomes the message and becomes
self-sustaining. Assessments train the organizations in continuing non-defensive self-
criticism. . Finally, assessments require senior management to become actively
involved in the improvement process, and this involvement almost always lasts
beyond the end of the assessment.
4: Assessments Educate Organizations in Worldwide Best Practices
By exposing a large segment of an organization's personnel to the best practices
embodied in an assessment's capability maturity model, assessments not only
motivate companies to improve, but they also teach them how to improve at a time
when they are most receptive to learning new techniques.
FEATURES OF CMMI
• CMMI Product suite_ a collection of all model
components, training material components and
appraisal components.
• Organized in three (3) main areas of interest
called constellation/models:
• CMMI for development (CMMI-DEV)
• Address the development of product and
services.
• Used by organizations in Defense, Healthcare,
finance, Insurance, Telecommunications, and
other Industries.
How is CMMI used for software
process improvement
Capability Maturity Model Integration (CMMI)
CMMI provides a framework that describes the key
elements of an effective software process, which
support the measurement of the software process.
It describes a process maturity framework of five
maturity levels (initial, managed, defined,
quantitatively and optimizing level). These levels
are defined in the following illustration:
DIFFERENT REPRESENTATION OF
CMMI
DIFFERENCES BETWEEN CONTINUOUS
AND STAGED REPRESENTATION
 Process areas can be organized into one of two representations.
 These includes:
1:Continuous representation
2:Staged representation
 Process areas describe key aspects of such process as:
 Configuration management
 Requirements management
 Product verification
 Systems integration etc.
 1:CONTINUOUS REPRESENTATION
 Offers maximum flexibility when using a CMMI model for process improvement.
 Improves the performance of a single process related trouble spot, or it can work on several areas that are closely aligned to the organization’s business objective
 Allows an organization’s to improve different processes at different rates.
 If you know the processes that need to be improved in your organization and you understand the dependencies among the process area described in CMMI.
 2:STAGED REPRESENTATION
 Offers a systematic, structured way to approach model based process improvement one stage at a time.
 Process areas are organized by maturity levels that take some of the guess work out of process improvement.
 Prescribes an order for implementing process areas according to maturity levels, which define the improvement path for an organization from the initial level to
the optimizing level.
DIFFERENCES BETWEEN CONTINUOUS
AND STAGED REPRESENTATION
• CONTINUOUS REPRESENTATION:
• 1:Grants explicit freedom to select the order of
improvement that best meets the organization’s
business objectives and mitigates the
organization’s areas of risk.
• 2:Enables increased visibility of the capability
achieved in each individual process area.
• 3:Allows improvements of different processes to
be performed at different rates.
• 4:Reflects a newer approach that does not yet
have the data to demonstrate its ties to return on
investment.
STAGED REPRESENTATION
• 1:Enables organization’s to have a predefined and
proven improvement path.
• 2:Focuses on a set of processes that provide an
organization with a specific capability that is
characterized by each maturity level.
• 3:Summarizes process improvement results in a
simple form of a single maturity level number.
• 4:Builds on a relatively long history of use that
includes case studies and data that demonstrate
return on investment.
