Queen Alexandra Elementary completes a WildED inspired action project!BC Spaces for Nature
Dear WildED, Both classes have been fully engaged in a sustainability unit which culminated in the action plan to reduce our school's garbage. Throughout the process they have been making presentations to both staff and students to increase their motivation to fully participate in our overall goal. They have taken (WildED's) carbon footprint test and committed to at least one more action to reduce their mark on the world. They have done an amazing job and have already been recognized by the Vancouver School Board for their amazing efforts.
Once again, we thoroughly enjoyed our (WildED) program and would love to hear about your programs next year. Take care and thanks, Grade 4/5 Classroom Teachers, Queen Alexandra Elementary School, Vancouver

WELCOME TO ALTOS DEL MAR SCULPTURE PARK (ADMSP)!
If your senses ignite at the sight of an interesting piece of art and your spirit craves a place to be one with the breeze, the ocean and the trees, soon your utopia will arrive. A place where harmony rules and butterflies live. Step within a realm where contradictions thrive, a place that is both soothing and exciting, beautiful and jarring, still and flowing, moving and stationary, evolutionary and timeless, organic and mechanic.
We are building the first sculpture park of its kind in the world as it will feature:
FREE changing exhibitions of sculpture from established artists from the 19th, 20th, and 21st centuries.
FREE community art classes, fitness and entertainment.
FREE social services to the under-served community through financial support to other local charities that provide social services.
365 days per year in the North Beach section of Miami Beach, Florida.
ADMSP will transform North Beach into a community, cultural, tourism and travel destination elevating the quality of life and economy for all.
We are building a place that although at first glance is a sculpture park, upon further inspection it reveals itself as an important community installation with cultural, social and economic implications that extend well beyond the sculptures and the traditional museum audiences- for EVERYONE!
This is a proposal for an exhibition called 'Thirst' bringing together 3 Biological Habitats, environments and biomes ultimately leading to the water-cycle and how it affects humanity.
This is the presentation created for the public forums, the first was held back in July and more will be coming up this winter. The ideas for the aquarium are all tentative and have been gathered through discussions with future stakeholders as well as comments posted to our Facebook page.
Five Ways to Practice Sustainability in The LakesMollyCampion1
Sustainability is what keeps national parks such as the Lake District going. We hear people talk about being sustainable a lot now, which is amazing, but what does it actually mean? Sustainability is made up of three sectors; the economy, society and the environment. The concept is, by meeting the needs of these three factors without hindering future development is living sustainably. It’s up to national parks to ensure they are doing all they can to make the area sustainable, but it is equally important both residents and visitors do their part to help these
beautiful parts of the world thrive.

December 21st is the Winter Solstice, the shortest day of the year and considered to be a time of rebirth for the sun. This time of year, leading up to daylights savings, is hard for so many of us because of the shorter days, the cold, and the innate desire to hibernate vs. do.

I will be updating the blog every month with some thoughts about the school and music education in general, please feel free to leave suggestions and ideas for future topics in the comments section.
As a music teacher it always strikes me that it is very difficult to come up with a coherent answer for this question and I suspect many music teachers feel the same or are unable to reach a consensus with one another.
Practical exam season in upon us and we would like to wish all of our candidates for this session the best of luck in their final preparations. It may be worthwhile at this time to reflect on the nature and value of music exams in the Classical music education environment.
One of the key features of my philosophy of music is the idea of gesture. The simplest way to understand a musical gesture is to think of the difference between a letter, phoneme and a morpheme in language: A letter being the smallest unit of written language, phoneme the smallest unit of sound and a morpheme the smallest unit of meaning. We can divide music up in a very similar fashion: Between notes, motives (figures) and gestures.
Music exams in general tend to employ a rubric system of marking, a system which can be effective in objectifying subjective subjects. A rubric, according to Merriam-Webster dictionary, is “a guide listing specific criteria for grading or scoring academic papers, projects, or tests”. For ABRSM exams, the specific criteria are as follows
Last month I discussed the criteria for the exam pieces which form the main body of the ABRSM exams. In the next few months I will talk about the other three sections of the practical exams: Scales, Sight Reading and Aural tests because although these tests comprise only 40% of the exam and often an even smaller proportion of the lesson time they are no less important than pieces for getting a good result.
Aural tests are often afforded the least attention in the preparation for exams. There are two reasons for this, which I will call the good news and the bad news.
Sight reading is one of the most difficult sections in the exam both to practice and to teach, yet it ultimately forms the basis of the whole of classical music. Learning classical music isn’t about learning to play a couple of songs; it is about learning to read music.
A group of children and a group of chimpanzees are shown a box and a complicated series of actions required to retrieve a treat from it. Both the children and the chimps are able to replicate this ritual to reliably get the sweet with similar skill. The difference comes in when a panel is pulled back to reveal that the ritual was completely unnecessary and that the treat can be retrieved directly. The surprising outcome of this experiment is that the chimpanzees forego the ritual at this point, skipping directly to the treat they were after, but the children (despite being told that it is not required) continue to act out the entire sequence before retrieving their reward.
So what is so bad about letting music education be based around the Romantic ideals of spectacle and performance? Surely the fee-paying public have a right to be satisfied?
The problem is that it easy to define what a spectacular performance is. The same problem applies to the modern ideal of novelty in music. It is really easy to judge a piece of music and say: This piece of music breaks new ground, therefore it is good.
Open access journals are academic peer reviewed journals that can be accessed easily without any financial or technical restriction. Readers can read and use the information of open access journals without paying any extra fees. Some publishers are known to take fees on behalf of the author, and some are supported by their academic institutions like universities, hospitals, libraries, research center etc. There are many international journals who publish fully accessible high quality articles and journals.

Removing Uninteresting Bytes in Software FuzzingAftab Hussain
Imagine a world where software fuzzing, the process of mutating bytes in test seeds to uncover hidden and erroneous program behaviors, becomes faster and more effective. A lot depends on the initial seeds, which can significantly dictate the trajectory of a fuzzing campaign, particularly in terms of how long it takes to uncover interesting behaviour in your code. We introduce DIAR, a technique designed to speedup fuzzing campaigns by pinpointing and eliminating those uninteresting bytes in the seeds. Picture this: instead of wasting valuable resources on meaningless mutations in large, bloated seeds, DIAR removes the unnecessary bytes, streamlining the entire process.
In this work, we equipped AFL, a popular fuzzer, with DIAR and examined two critical Linux libraries -- Libxml's xmllint, a tool for parsing xml documents, and Binutil's readelf, an essential debugging and security analysis command-line tool used to display detailed information about ELF (Executable and Linkable Format). Our preliminary results show that AFL+DIAR does not only discover new paths more quickly but also achieves higher coverage overall. This work thus showcases how starting with lean and optimized seeds can lead to faster, more comprehensive fuzzing campaigns -- and DIAR helps you find such seeds.

Climate Impact of Software Testing at Nordic Testing DaysKari Kakkonen
My slides at Nordic Testing Days 6.6.2024
Climate impact / sustainability of software testing discussed on the talk. ICT and testing must carry their part of global responsibility to help with the climat warming. We can minimize the carbon footprint but we can also have a carbon handprint, a positive impact on the climate. Quality characteristics can be added with sustainability, and then measured continuously. Test environments can be used less, and in smaller scale and on demand. Test techniques can be used in optimizing or minimizing number of tests. Test automation can be used to speed up testing.
