Hewlett-Packard is Founded.
David Packard and Bill Hewlett
found Hewlett-Packard in a Palo
Alto,California garage.Their first
product was the HP 200AAudio
Oscillator, which rapidly becomes
a popular piece of test equipment
for engineers.
1941
KonradZuse finishes the Z3
computer.The Z3 was an
early computer built by
German engineer Konrad
Zuse working in complete
isolation from
developments elsewhere.
The original Z3 was
destroyed in a bombing raid
of Berlin in late 1943.
1944
Harvard Mark-1 is
completed.Conceived by
Harvard professor Howard
Aiken, and designed and
built by IBM, the Harvard
Mark-1 was a room-
sized, relay-based
calculator.
3. 1949
MauriceWilkes
assembled the
EDSAC, the first
practical stored-
program computer, at
Cambridge University.
1962
The LINC (Laboratory
InstrumentationComputer)
offered the first real time
laboratory data processing.
Designed byWesley Clark at
Lincoln
Laboratories, Digital
EquipmentCorp.
1965
Digital Equipment Corp.
introduced the PDP-
8, the first commercially
successful
minicomputer.
4. 1974
Researchers at the Xerox
PaloAlto Research Center
designed theAlto — the
first work station with a
built-in mouse for input.
TheAlto stored several files
simultaneously in windows
1976
Steve Wozniak designed
theApple I, a single-
board computer
1981
Adam Osborne
completed the first
portable computer, the
Osborne I, which
weighed 24 pounds and
cost $1,795.

Apple Computer
launched the
Macintosh, the first
successful mouse-driven
computer with a graphic
user interface
1988
Apple cofounder Steve
Jobs, who left Apple to form
his own company, unveiled
the NeXT.The computer he
created failed but was
recognized as an important
innovation.
1990
The World Wide Web was born
when Tim Berners-Lee,a
researcher at CERN, the high-
energy physics laboratory in
Geneva, developed HyperText
Markup Language. HTML, as it is
commonly known, allowed the
Internet to expand into the World
Wide Web, using specifications he
developed such as URL and HTTP.
6. 1991
Apple introduces
System 7 operating
system May 13
1995
On December 4, Sun
Microsystems announced
JavaScript and first releases it
in Netscape 2.0B3. In the same
year they also introduced Java.
1998
During the demonstration of a
pre-release copy of Windows 98 at
Comdex Bill Gates and an
assistant demonstrate how to
install a scanner. During the
demonstrationWindows 98
caused an error message.
7. 2003
The first computer is
infected with the Spybot
worm on April 16.
2007
Microsoft releases
MicrosoftWindowsVista
andOffice 2007 to the
general public January 30.
2012
MicrosoftWindows 8
and Microsoft Surface is
released October 26.
8. Monitors now are much thinner, use less
energy, and provide a greater graphics
quality.
