2. History
Syahbandar tower called also Uitkljk, Uitkijk Post was on the west bank of the mouth of the Ciliwung,
precisely located on Jl. Fish Market 1, Jakarta. Referred to as De Uitkijk or tower observer, because this tower
to monitor the entire region both in the direction of the port of Sunda Kelapa and high seas in the north and
to the City of Batavia in the south and also because Syahbandar Tower (Uitkijk) established replace the old
flagpole located in shipyard VOC. The function of the flagpole is to give signs to the ship will dock at Sunda
Kelapa, but at the same time as the control tower, both sea and land area.
Speaking Syahbandar Tower, then can not get out of Bastion Culemborg. Bastion or blockhouse was built
much earlier, namely in 1645 and is part of the walls of the City of Batavia. Culemborg is nothing but the
name of the hometown of the Governor-General van Diemen (1593-1645). Inside this camp Syahbandar

4. In the Syahbandar Tower can be seen a unique relic of the past,
shaped stone slab inscribed with Chinese characters, is thought
to be the center point of the meridian points or the City of
Batavia. The Chinese characters read: Limit Point. By the
Governor of Jakarta at that time Ali Sadikin on 7 July 1977 the
monument was zero kilometer placed here this can be seen at
the inauguration of the monument located in the courtyard. It

9. current building conditions Syahbandar Tower in fairly good state, in 2012 Jakarta City Government has made
conservation programs carried out to improve the whole tower unkempt condition, including repainting the walls
of the tower and reform steps that have been looked fragile. However, this conservation can not fix the slope of
the tower.
But conservation is only done on the building alone, the environment around the site is still very alarming. There
are times that clogged by waste and does not flow in the vicinity of the location, time is very eyesore and cause air
pollution due cause bad odor.
