Dark Times for Dark Patterns:
Ethical Alternatives
JW Marriott
Salon FGH
110 E 2nd St
12:30PM - 1:30PM
As designers, we sometimes find ourselves on a knife edge between user
needs and business goals. It can be tempting to fall back to “dark pat-
terns” - processes designed to trick users - because they are a shortcut
to results. However, the use of dark patterns isn’t conducive to a good
night’s sleep. Most of us want to find solutions that don’t resort to de-
ceiving users. This talk will explore alternatives to infamous and common
dark patterns, with a focus on how we can use psychological principles
and persuasive design techniques to meet goals through encouragement
rather than deception.

In a world where technology is constantly evolving, making the time and

commitment to learning can have a great pay off but it can be hard to get

The Rise of the Visual Strategist
Hilton Austin Downtown
Salon G
500 E 4th St
3:30PM - 4:30PM
As the need to visually communicate explodes, organizations of all sizes
face the need for new staff, tools and mindsets. This goes far beyond an
Instagram account manager, into the heart of an organization’s mission,
brand, legacy and value. But in most cases, the approach to visual narra-
tive is ad hoc, at best.
Solving this problem will require an integrated approach that is grounded
in education, technology, business needs, and an understanding of visual
semiotics. Dennis Keeley has been addressing this from the education
side, while Peter Krogh has been working on technical development.
They will discuss the new role of the corporate visual strategist and the
opportunities it presents.

Everything a consumer could possibly need is available (often at a better
price) at the click of a button. Retail has officially gone digital. But unof-
ficially, the shop experience is still indispensable. One by one, ecomm
powerhouses are returning to the ground.
Modern retailers are prioritizing hubs for culture and community over
boxes to transact sales. Traditional retail spaces are no longer being treat-
ed as just a place to sell product. Instead retailers are creating an environ-
ment where brand values can be experienced and shared with like-mind-
ed peers. The brick-and-mortar experience is transforming into a cultural
hot spot for building community.

In recent years, there has been an undercurrent of consumers rejecting

this trend can be attributed to nostalgia, the real implication is that hu-

From Cartoons to Apps:
UI Animation in 2450!
JW Marriott
Salon D
110 E 2nd St
11:00AM - 12:00PM
How do you react to animation or audio within an app? You probably take
it for granted, assuming it’s only there for aesthetics. There is a lot of UI
design that is still created with an old, static web mentality, but design-
ers are now shifting to being more mindful of what animation and sound
mean in terms of the user experience.
How can the designers of tomorrow create the next generation of inter-
faces while drawing inspiration from animators of the past? What does
Bugs Bunny know about making apps anyhow?
Miguel Montanez, PBS KIDS, and Dave Schlafman, CloudKid, will take a
deep dive into how UI animation and audio have shifted from ornamental

Subtle Interfaces:
Designing for Calm Tech
JW Marriott
Salon D
110 E 2nd St
3:30PM - 4:30PM
Some of the world’s best technologies do one thing brilliantly. This panel
brings together leading UK creatives and researchers who are developing
products and experiences that are calm, slow and often magical. When
we let go of trying to be all things to all people, we make space for imag-
inative interfaces and disruptive ideas.
Our panellists embrace cutting edge technologies, working with physical
and digital materials. They design products that respond to specific social
contexts; ranging from the personal relationships that we have with ob-
jects in our homes, to the social displacement inherent when moving to a
care home, to our many and varied experiences of the cities we live in.
