Dark Times for Dark Patterns:
Ethical Alternatives
JW Marriott

12:30PM - 1:30PM
As designers, we sometimes find ourselves on a knife edge between user
needs and business goals. It can be tempting to fall back to “dark pat-
terns” - processes designed to trick users - because they are a shortcut
to results. However, the use of dark patterns isn’t conducive to a good
night’s sleep. Most of us want to find solutions that don’t resort to de-
ceiving users. This talk will explore alternatives to infamous and common
dark patterns, with a focus on how we can use psychological principles
and persuasive design techniques to meet goals through encouragement
rather than deception.

The Rise of the Visual Strategist
Hilton Austin Downtown
Salon G
500 E 4th St
3:30PM - 4:30PM
As the need to visually communicate explodes, organizations of all sizes
face the need for new staff, tools and mindsets. This goes far beyond an
Instagram account manager, into the heart of an organization’s mission,
brand, legacy and value. But in most cases, the approach to visual narra-
tive is ad hoc, at best.
Solving this problem will require an integrated approach that is grounded
in education, technology, business needs, and an understanding of visual
semiotics. Dennis Keeley has been addressing this from the education
side, while Peter Krogh has been working on technical development.
They will discuss the new role of the corporate visual strategist and the
opportunities it presents.

Everything a consumer could possibly need is available (often at a better

ficially, the shop experience is still indispensable. One by one, ecomm
powerhouses are returning to the ground.
Modern retailers are prioritizing hubs for culture and community over
boxes to transact sales. Traditional retail spaces are no longer being treat-
ed as just a place to sell product. Instead retailers are creating an environ-
ment where brand values can be experienced and shared with like-mind-
ed peers. The brick-and-mortar experience is transforming into a cultural
hot spot for building community.

In recent years, there has been an undercurrent of consumers rejecting

this trend can be attributed to nostalgia, the real implication is that hu-
mans are revolting from tech because they crave touch experiences. We

From Cartoons to Apps:
UI Animation in 2450!
JW Marriott
Salon D
110 E 2nd St
11:00AM - 12:00PM
How do you react to animation or audio within an app? You probably take
it for granted, assuming it’s only there for aesthetics. There is a lot of UI
design that is still created with an old, static web mentality, but design-
ers are now shifting to being more mindful of what animation and sound
mean in terms of the user experience.
How can the designers of tomorrow create the next generation of inter-
faces while drawing inspiration from animators of the past? What does
Bugs Bunny know about making apps anyhow?
Miguel Montanez, PBS KIDS, and Dave Schlafman, CloudKid, will take a
deep dive into how UI animation and audio have shifted from ornamental

Subtle Interfaces:
Designing for Calm Tech
JW Marriott
Salon D
110 E 2nd St
3:30PM - 4:30PM
Some of the world’s best technologies do one thing brilliantly. This panel
brings together leading UK creatives and researchers who are developing
products and experiences that are calm, slow and often magical. When
we let go of trying to be all things to all people, we make space for imag-
inative interfaces and disruptive ideas.
Our panellists embrace cutting edge technologies, working with physical
and digital materials. They design products that respond to specific social
contexts; ranging from the personal relationships that we have with ob-
jects in our homes, to the social displacement inherent when moving to a
care home, to our many and varied experiences of the cities we live in.

MORE INFO: Disruptive Philanthropy in the Digital World Austin Convention Center  Ballroom EFG  531 E 4th St 11:00AM - 12:00PM Technology companies have become the goliaths of the 21st century global economy. With large revenues, however, comes large responsibility to give back. In this session, hear from the Director of Google.org, the company’s philanthropic arm, about everything from Google’s criteria and model for investing to trends across the philanthropic and social enter- prise sectors. Google.org focuses on more than just giving money, and this session will explore how the team leverages all of Google - from people to products - in support of its philanthropy. All of these efforts are aimed at supporting innovative entrepreneurs who are using technology to take on some of the toughest challenges both locally and globally. http://schedule.sxsw.com/2016/events/event_PP90731 Hugh Forrest IA DIR SXSW STAFF Jacquelline Fuller DIR GOOGLE.ORG Google Looks like a great insight into the positive projects that Google has going on in the background.
  • 5. WHAT? WHERE? WHEN? WHY? WHO? MORE INFO: #AskGaryVee IRL: Gary Vaynerchuk Answers It All Austin Convention Center  Ballroom EFG  531 E 4th St 12:30PM - 1:30PM You may have seen Gary Vaynerchuk’s standing ovation-worthy keynotes, watched the day in the life videos showing this business leader and true hustler in action, and tuned in to his #AskGaryVee show where he gives no-holds-barred answers to the toughest questions his millions of social media fans can come up with. SXSW legend Gary Vaynerchuk will answer your questions in this live version of his wildly popular web show and new book, #AskGaryVee.  http://schedule.sxsw.com/2016/events/event_PP91412 Gary Vaynerchuk CEO VaynerMedia He has an undeniable amount of energy and great insights into marketing yourself online. On the other hand he is described by some as a ‘snake oil salesman’. It’d be great to experience first person and decide which side of the fence to sit on.
  • 6. WHAT? WHERE? WHEN? WHY? WHO? MORE INFO: Dark Times for Dark Patterns: Ethical Alternatives JW Marriott  Salon FGH  110 E 2nd St 12:30PM - 1:30PM As designers, we sometimes find ourselves on a knife edge between user needs and business goals. It can be tempting to fall back to “dark pat- terns” - processes designed to trick users - because they are a shortcut to results. However, the use of dark patterns isn’t conducive to a good night’s sleep. Most of us want to find solutions that don’t resort to de- ceiving users. This talk will explore alternatives to infamous and common dark patterns, with a focus on how we can use psychological principles and persuasive design techniques to meet goals through encouragement rather than deception. http://schedule.sxsw.com/2016/events/event_PP49272 Cristina Viganò DESIGNER Cyber-Duck Neil Dawson SR UX ARCHITECT AnalogFolk Because dark patterns can be easy to fall into for designers. It’d be great to know the techniques to avoid and the potential ethical solutions.
  • 7. WHAT? WHERE? WHEN? WHY? WHO? MORE INFO: Learning New Things (Without Feeling Like a n00b) JW Marriott  Salon FGH  110 E 2nd St 2:00PM - 3:00PM In a world where technology is constantly evolving, making the time and committing to learn new things can be both exhilarating and overwhelm- ing but necessary to remain effective. The possibilities from making a commitment to learning can have a great pay off but it can be hard to get started, get over feeling like a n00b, and getting some focus in the pur- suit of knowledge. Erik Natzke works in Adobe’s Creative Technology Lab as a Principal Artist-in-Residence and spends his days experimenting with everything from drones and aerial photograph to typography collections to virtual reality. This session strives to share the lessons he has learned in his continual pursuit of knowledge. http://schedule.sxsw.com/2016/events/event_PP58088 Erik Natzke PRINCIPAL DESIGNER Adobe Systems Inc It’d be great to get an insight into a respected artist’s thought process.
  • 8. WHAT? WHERE? WHEN? WHY? WHO? MORE INFO: The Rise of the Visual Strategist Hilton Austin Downtown  Salon G  500 E 4th St 3:30PM - 4:30PM As the need to visually communicate explodes, organizations of all sizes face the need for new staff, tools and mindsets. This goes far beyond an Instagram account manager, into the heart of an organization’s mission, brand, legacy and value. But in most cases, the approach to visual narra- tive is ad hoc, at best. Solving this problem will require an integrated approach that is grounded in education, technology, business needs, and an understanding of visual semiotics. Dennis Keeley has been addressing this from the education side, while Peter Krogh has been working on technical development. They will discuss the new role of the corporate visual strategist and the opportunities it presents. http://schedule.sxsw.com/2016/events/event_PP50707 Dennis Keeley CHAIR OF PHOTOGRAPHY Art Center College of Design Peter Krogh PROD TEAM LEAD PhotoShelter Inc Yet another new job description for an ever evolving industry, but what does it mean from both an educational and professional viewpoint?

MORE INFO: Culture: The New Currency of Retail Hilton Austin Downtown  Salon K  500 E 4th St 5:00PM - 6:00PM Everything a consumer could possibly need is available (often at a better price) at the click of a button. Retail has officially gone digital. But unof- ficially, the shop experience is still indispensable. One by one, ecomm powerhouses are returning to the ground. Modern retailers are prioritizing hubs for culture and community over boxes to transact sales. Traditional retail spaces are no longer being treat- ed as just a place to sell product. Instead retailers are creating an environ- ment where brand values can be experienced and shared with like-mind- ed peers. The brick-and-mortar experience is transforming into a cultural hot spot for building community. http://schedule.sxsw.com/2016/events/event_PP51075 Ethan Song CO-FOUNDER& CEO Frank & Oak Lacey Norton HEAD OF RETAIL Kit and Ace Rick Badgley VP OF RETAIL TOMS Robbie Myers EDITOR-IN-CHIEF Elle Magazine In the digital realm, retailers are increasingly aligning with culture via ‘branded content’, but on the flip side the physical realm is changing for them too. But what if they are wrong? What if better understanding does not come though simplicity of design, but rather by introducing controlled complexity? MORE INFO: Why We Crave Touch in Our Interactions with Tech JW Marriott  Salon D  110 E 2nd St 3:30PM - 4:30PM In recent years, there has been an undercurrent of consumers rejecting technology – whether it is preferring a paper book or a printed Polaroid over a digital photo – to get back to the realities of life. While some of this trend can be attributed to nostalgia, the real implication is that hu- mans are revolting from tech because they crave touch experiences. We have a need to feel objects vs interacting on a glass screen. This panel of international experts will examine how we can break out from behind the glass screen and offer a more satisfying technology experiences.
