After the Supreme Court upheld the National Green Tribunal’s (NGT) ban on RO water purifiers in areas where the total dissolved solids (TDS) measure in
water is less than 500 mg/liter, the environment ministry (MoEF) on Monday issued a draft notification seeking all stake holder’s views before banning the RO
purifiers.
This notification is not the last word and the Ministry will await comments from the public and RO manufacturers for 30 days, after which it may incorporate the
suggestions before it becomes a law
A bench of justices R F Nariman and S Ravindra Bhat said the association can approach the concerned ministry within ten
days with relevant materials in this regard and the government will consider it before issuing a notification as per the NGT's
direction.
The Water Quality India Association has moved the Supreme Court against a ban imposed by the National Green Tribunal (NGT) on use of RO filters in Delhi
as they "unnecessarily result in rejecting 80 per cent of potable water".

Electrolyzed reduced water (ERW) is the most common term in the scientific literature.1ERW has an alkaline pH (8-10) and contains molecular hydrogen.1Water ionizers
were invented in the early 1900’s. Research on electrolyzed water started around 1931 in Japan where it gained popularity in the 1950’s.2 Around this time, the water was
touted as having “healing effects” and was called “shin nooru solution” or “synnohl liquid”. In 1962, separate water ionizer companies (one from Nagano Prefecture and
the other from Kyoto Prefecture) brought the electrolytic apparatus to the Cabinet Welfare Bureau (equivalent to the Japanese Ministry of Health, Labor, and Welfare
[JMHLW]) and applied to manufacture the apparatus as a medical device.

However, because some tap waters didn’t have sufficient minerals for
efficient electrolysis, it was impossible to produce alkaline water with
the same characteristics. Adding calcium lactate to the water solved
this problem and allowed an alkaline pH to be produced. With
addition of calcium lactate as a prerequisite, approval for a “synthol
liquid manufacturing apparatus” was granted in 1965 and recognized
as being a “medical substance generator” under the Pharmaceutical
Affairs Law5 as follows.
Drinking alkaline ionized water is effective against chronic
diarrhea, indigestion, abnormal stomach or intestine fermentation,
acid control, and acid indigestion. The JMHLW also approved the
mildly and strongly acidic waters as medical substances. In 1978
the Korean FDA also approved these devices for similar reasons.
The approval process follows virtually the identical criteria and
standards as was developed by Japan. Some have suggested
that the approvals are totally different, and that Japanese
approvals require extensive testing, even clinical trials and up to 5
years or more of vigorous investigations.

Alkaline Water’s Antacid Effect.
Research done by the 2nd Internal Medicine Dept. of Shiga Medical University and Dept. of Gastroenterology, National Ohkura Hospital, Japan tested alkaline water’s ability to
act as an antacid by measuring the pH of the stomachs of 6 volunteers before and after drinking alkaline water.
In the study, 6 volunteers were given alkaline ionized water at pH levels of 9, 10, and 11 and told to drink 1 liter per day. Stomach pH levels were measured inside the
volunteer’s stomachs for a period of 24 hours, and researchers verified an increase in pH inside the volunteer’s stomachs from drinking alkaline ionized water at a pH of 9 or
greater.
