Suzanne Harte will present a confirmation seminar on her research exploring eating behaviors in 3-5 year olds in early education and care settings. She has a PhD in nutrition and dietetics and operates two children's dietetic clinics. The seminar will be chaired by Dr. Helen Vidgen and include panel members from QUT's schools of exercise and nutrition sciences, psychology and counseling, and education. Harte's research will qualitatively examine how nutrition guidelines are implemented in early education centers, feeding practices, children's eating behaviors, and perceptions of eating occasions from children, caregivers and parents. The goal is to contribute to the limited research on acquiring healthy eating behaviors in early education in Australia and provide perspectives

Participants completed pre- and post-tests assessing nutrition knowledge. Scores increased significantly from pre- to post-test, indicating the program improved knowledge of healthy food options and nutrition myths. However, many participants still faced barriers to healthy eating like lack of money, time, and cooking skills. Future research should explore ways to overcome barriers and maintain knowledge gains long-term.

This study examined the relationship between caregiver intervention and toddlers' motor skill improvement. 29 toddlers aged 2.5 years old participated in an 8-week motor skills program at 2 daycare centers. Results showed toddlers who received caregiver intervention significantly improved their kicking, jumping, and other gross motor skills, while those without intervention showed little improvement. So to reduce child mortality ,requires tackling perinatal causes and co-ordinated strategies to reduce antenatal and perinatal risk factors are essential .We need to identify evidence based prevention strategies which start in pregnancy and continue into the first years of a baby's life to reduce harm and build resilience .We need to understand what are the barriers and facilitators of behavioural change in pregnant women and health professionals .This presentation will outline some of the neurodevelopmental and anatomical changes in the child's brain which are most affected by forms of child abuse and neglect and outline current Scottish Government policies which are delivering on prevention , to make Scotland ‘The best place to grow up ‘.
Dr Katherine McKay has been a consultant paediatrician since 1995, working in areas of high deprivation in Glasgow. Her special interests are Community Paediatrics, particularly disability, including children with complex needs and life limiting conditions, child protection and the vulnerable child, and interagency work with social work and education.
She became Lead Clinician for Community Child Health in Glasgow in 2000, and Clinical Director from 2005 till 2010 covering all of the Glasgow City CHCPs and CHPs in a period of significant organisational change towards Integrating Children's Services across health, education and social work. She has been a fellow of the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health since 1994, Clinical Adviser to NHS QIS on the first Standards for Children's Services published in 2004 for Children and Young People with Asthma and then was an Associate Inspector for HMIE in the Child Protection Inspections.
She was National Clinical Lead for Children and Young People's Health in Scotland from August 2010 to 2012 and then became Senior Medical Officer for Child Health in October 2012. Since October 2012 her main policy input has been in Early Years, especially the Implementation of GIRFEC, in universal health services; the identification and response to vulnerable children by health services; Child Death Review Systems; and the health service input to Looked After Children. She continues a clinical practice one day every fortnight.

Dr Katherine McKay has been a consultant paediatrician since 1995, working in areas of high deprivation in Glasgow. Her special interests are Community Paediatrics, particularly disability, including children with complex needs and life limiting conditions, child protection and the vulnerable child, and interagency work with social work and education.
She became Lead Clinician for Community Child Health in Glasgow in 2000, and Clinical Director from 2005 till 2010 covering all of the Glasgow City CHCPs and CHPs in a period of significant organisational change towards Integrating Children's Services across health, education and social work. She has been a fellow of the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health since 1994, Clinical Adviser to NHS QIS on the first Standards for Children's Services published in 2004 for Children and Young People with Asthma and then was an Associate Inspector for HMIE in the Child Protection Inspections.
She was National Clinical Lead for Children and Young People's Health in Scotland from August 2010 to 2012 and then became Senior Medical Officer for Child Health in October 2012. Since October 2012 her main policy input has been in Early Years, especially the Implementation of GIRFEC, in universal health services; the identification and response to vulnerable children by health services; Child Death Review Systems; and the health service input to Looked After Children. She continues a clinical practice one day every fortnight.

As a nurse, nutrition is an important topic to advocate. Childhood obesity is a serious problem in the United States putting children at risk for poor health and serious health conditions (Weicheselbaum, Buttriss, 2014). According to the Centers of Disease Control and Prevention (2017), about 1 in 6 (17%) of children in the United States are considered overweight or are considered obese. This writer’s purpose is to advocate and implement healthy lifestyles modifications starting at a young age. These concerns will be addressed by contacting the State House Representative, Shevrin D. “Shev” Jones.
The first step in planning the visit was conducting research and gathering contact information on local schools in the community, a dietitian, and a local policy maker or legislator who seems to express the same concerns to implement healthier nutrition in schools. A detailed email outlining the current status, an overview of the plan with potential benefits or outcomes, as well as potential drawbacks and costs was sent to Shevrin D. “Shev” Jones. The principal of Pembroke Pines Charter Elementary School, Michael Castellano, the director of dining services of Chartwells, Javier Diaz, would also be contacted. After two days, a telephone call was placed and a meeting was set up with Shevrin D. “Shev” Jones. Prior to placing a telephone call and prior to the meeting, this writer prepared the night before for the meeting conversation and possible questions that may arise. Upon meeting with Shevrin D. “Shev” Jones, this writer introduced herself, gave a concise background of the years of experience in the healthcare field, and expressed how important healthy living is. The conversation then started by mentioning that this writer wants to make a policy change of changing school nutrition by including healthier options for children to chose from. In doing so, hiring a dietitian, recommending providing assisting meal programs and school gardening were suggested solutions. Facts were given about how serious childhood obesity is and the health problems associated with this condition, such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, cardiovasc.

This study analyzed the incidence of overweight/obesity in 242 preschool children in Florianopolis, Brazil over 2 years (2008-2010). The incidence of new overweight/obesity cases was 4.05% over the study period. The accumulated incidence rate was 20.25 cases/year/1000 children and the incidence density rate was 20.65 cases/year/1000 person-years. After adjustment for factors like gender, age, family income and parents' education, none were found to be significantly associated with the incidence of overweight/obesity in this population of preschool children.

This paper analyzes research on the benefits of breastfeeding. It summarizes a study by Jenkins and Foster (2014) that examined the relationship between breastfeeding exclusivity and children's health and cognitive outcomes. The study found some positive effects of breastfeeding exclusivity on cognitive skills at age 2 but not at other ages. The paper also summarizes two other studies that found benefits of breastfeeding for both mothers' mental health and likelihood of breastfeeding. It concludes that increasing education about breastfeeding's health benefits can increase rates of breastfeeding and implementing practices like the Baby-Friendly Hospital Initiative can help support breastfeeding.
ASSOCIATED FACTORS TO STUNTED CHILDREN IN PUTRAJAYA
The study identified 11 factors that contribute to stunting in children under 5 years old in Putrajaya, Malaysia. The strongest associated factor was complications during pregnancy like intrauterine growth restriction. Other significant factors included mid-parental height less than 150cm, low household income, low birth weight, use of pacifiers, lower maternal education, unemployed fathers, anemia in children, bottle feeding, lack of minimum dietary diversity, and care by babysitters. Addressing these maternal, socioeconomic, childcare and nutritional factors through community interventions and policies could help reduce the high prevalence of stunting in Putrajaya.

Breastfeeding is a key tool for nourishing a baby, preventing childhood illnesses like obesity, and hypertension later on in life. In addition, it reduces the cost to the family and the entire country. Uganda to some extent faces a great deal of challenges, particularly in the health sector. The aim of this study was to assess the knowledge, attitude and practices of exclusive breastfeeding in mothers with infants between 1 day to 2 years of age attending the immunization and the pediatric inpatient in Kiryandongo Hospital and to identify factors that affect exclusive breastfeeding (EBF). A cross-section descriptive survey design was used. 187 respondents were selected randomly. The data were collected using a questionnaire and the data was analyzed using descriptive statistics of frequency and percentages. The result of this study showed that 71.2 % knew the correct definition and duration of exclusive breastfeeding, 59.7% exclusively breastfeeds for the first six (6) months of life, 100% gave colostrum to their babies because they believed it provides nutrition and protection to their babies, 87% breastfed on demand. The result also showed that there is a positive attitude of mothers toward exclusive breastfeeding as 86.6% of them agreed that breast milk alone is sufficient to the baby during the first six (6) months of life as well as believed that EBF has benefits to both the infants and the mother. 51% of respondents weaned their babies between 15-18 months and 41% weaned between 19 months to 2 years. It was concluded that there was a high level of knowledge on breastfeeding among the respondents, more than half of the respondents practiced exclusive breastfeeding as recommended and relatively all the respondents had positive attitude toward exclusive breastfeeding.

The Placemat Protocol is a novel measure designed to assess preschoolers' developing schemas of healthy meals. It involves children creating two pretend meals using highly realistic toy food models - a preferred meal and a healthy meal. The researcher can then analyze various dimensions of the meals created, such as nutritional content. The study aimed to validate this measure by comparing the nutritional profiles of the preferred vs. healthy meals and examining correlations with other measures of nutrition knowledge and dietary behaviors. Results showed children's healthy meals contained fewer calories, less fat and sugar, and more fiber than their preferred meals, supporting the validity of the Placemat Protocol as a developmentally appropriate way to measure preschoolers' understanding of healthy eating.

Abstract
Objective: The objective of this study was to identify factors influencing eating behavior of Ecuadorian adolescents - from
the perspective of parents, school staff and adolescents - to develop a conceptual framework for adolescents’ eating
behavior.
Study design: Twenty focus groups (N = 144 participants) were conducted separately with adolescents aged 11–15 y (n
(focus groups) = 12, N (participants) = 80), parents (n = 4, N = 32) and school staff (n = 4, N = 32) in rural and urban Ecuador.
A semi-structured questioning route was developed based on the ‘Attitude, Social influences and Self-efficacy’ model and
the socio-ecological model to assess the relevance of behavioral and environmental factors in low- and middle-income
countries. Two researchers independently analyzed verbatim transcripts for emerging themes, using deductive thematic
content analysis. Data were analyzed using NVivo 8.
Results: All groups recognized the importance of eating healthily and key individual factors in Ecuadorian adolescents’ food
choices were: financial autonomy, food safety perceptions, lack of self-control, habit strength, taste preferences and
perceived peer norms. Environmental factors included the poor nutritional quality of food and its easy access at school. In
their home and family environment, time and convenience completed the picture as barriers to eating healthily. Participants
acknowledged the impact of the changing socio-cultural environment on adolescents’ eating patterns. Availability of
healthy food at home and financial constraints differed between settings and socio-economic groups.
Conclusion: Our findings endorse the importance of investigating behavioral and environmental factors that influence and
mediate healthy dietary behavior prior to intervention development. Several culture-specific factors emerged that were
incorporated into a conceptual framework for developing health promotion interventions in Ecuador.

This study proposes implementing a nutrition education program in Poudre School District that incorporates gardening and cooking lessons. The study analyzes the program's feasibility based on student interest, teacher acceptance, health impact, and financial impact. Student interest was high based on participation in similar programs. However, teacher acceptance was mixed - while teachers supported nutrition education, they felt unable to implement interactive programs due to preparation time requirements. The health impact was inconclusive as long-term studies have not been done, but short-term studies found improved nutrition knowledge and healthier food choices. The financial feasibility would depend on fitting costs such as staff and supplies within the school district's budget.

A cross-sectional study was conducted in Pakistan to evaluate maternal knowledge, attitudes and practices regarding newborn care and breastfeeding. 218 mothers were interviewed using a questionnaire. Logistic regression analysis found that presence of a professional birth attendant, sterilization of feeding bottles, and knowledge about the reasons for vaccination were significantly associated with urban residence. Maternal education level was significantly associated with several appropriate newborn care practices and knowledge, such as correct timing of weaning, adequacy of breast milk, handwashing before breastfeeding, and knowledge about jaundice. The results suggest that young, literate mothers were more likely to initiate breastfeeding earlier than older, illiterate mothers. Traditional risky newborn care practices were common. Improving

One in five children ages 2-5 in the US is overweight or obese, putting them at risk for chronic diseases later in life. Living Healthy in Washington County is partnering with local childcare centers and preschools to promote healthy habits for over 900 infants and young children through three programs - breastfeeding support, physical activity training (CATCH), and nutrition education (LANA). The LANA program introduces children to fruits and vegetables through stories and activities and incorporates these foods into meals and snacks.

It is intended thatthis research will contribute to the limited body ofresearch regarding feeding practices and acquisition ofchildren’s healthy eating behaviours in ECEC services in Australia and provide perspectives to gauge the practice outcomes associated with the nation-wide implementation ofthe NQS.
