[Slidecast] Valuing Eco-System Services: Inside the Dow Chemicals/Nature Cons...Sustainable Brands
Dow Chemicals and The Nature Conservancy have partnered in a breakthrough collaboration aimed at demonstrating the power of a systematic approach to understanding and factoring into corporate decision-making the value of nature, biodiversity and ecosystem services. The partnership is formed to help manage risk, identify investment opportunities to maximize ROI and shape Dow’s next generation sustainability goals while taking a science-based approach to protecting the planet with global reach and impact.
The Green Race is On is the title of the WBCSD's Annual Review 2009 ( 28.8 MB) . It is only in the past five years that thoughtful companies have begun to understand the vast opportunities of moving toward a sustainable world, and that science has made clear the global catastrophes inherent in un-sustainable development.
This Annual Review celebrates both the 15 year anniversary of the WBCSD and how member companies are engaging with sustainable development. In it we cover the pertinent issues challenging us, including:
Energy, climate, development and urbanization and the link between them
The re-invention of “green jobs”
Smarter grids, new investments in energy supply and distribution
Sustainable consumption, with consumers beginning to look at individual purchasing patterns and their impacts on the planet
Global and local water challenges
Advanced green energy technologies
Business opportunities associated with the sustainable management and stewardship of ecosystems and the creation of market mechanisms for ecosystem services.

This is a presentation Ryan Martens presented at the Rockies Venture Club. The point of the talk was to encourage folks to get started on the curve toward greening and that strategic and tactical benefits would come as well as personal benefits. I left folks with the pointers, on the last slide, to a number of the sources that are helping us up the curve.

Getting the Lead Out: How Lansing, Michigan Replaced 13,500 Lead Service Line...Environmental Initiative
Lansing is one of only two cities in the United States to have completely replaced their lead service lines and is advising Flint, Michigan in the wake of their drinking water crisis. Scott Hamelink talked about how and why Lansing replaced their lead pipes, focusing on the methods that allowed them to cut the cost of replacement by more than half.
The City of Hugo, in response to water supply issues and projected growth in drinking water demand, is working on ambitious public-private partnerships that will re-use storm water for irrigation in residential areas, saving millions of gallons of drinking water a year and reducing peak demand.

Effective Application Security in Software Delivery lifecycle using Deployment Firewall and DBOM
The modern software delivery process (or the CI/CD process) includes many tools, distributed teams, open-source code, and cloud platforms. Constant focus on speed to release software to market, along with the traditional slow and manual security checks has caused gaps in continuous security as an important piece in the software supply chain. Today organizations feel more susceptible to external and internal cyber threats due to the vast attack surface in their applications supply chain and the lack of end-to-end governance and risk management.
The software team must secure its software delivery process to avoid vulnerability and security breaches. This needs to be achieved with existing tool chains and without extensive rework of the delivery processes. This talk will present strategies and techniques for providing visibility into the true risk of the existing vulnerabilities, preventing the introduction of security issues in the software, resolving vulnerabilities in production environments quickly, and capturing the deployment bill of materials (DBOM).

Have the message received by managers and peers along with a test email for review
But there’s more:
In a second workflow supporting the same use case, you’ll see:
Your campaign sent to target colleagues for approval
If the “Approve” button is clicked, a Jira/Zendesk ticket is created for the marketing design team
But—if the “Reject” button is pushed, colleagues will be alerted via Slack message

Neuro-symbolic is not enough, we need neuro-*semantic*Frank van Harmelen
Neuro-symbolic (NeSy) AI is on the rise. However, simply machine learning on just any symbolic structure is not sufficient to really harvest the gains of NeSy. These will only be gained when the symbolic structures have an actual semantics. I give an operational definition of semantics as “predictable inference”.
All of this illustrated with link prediction over knowledge graphs, but the argument is general.
