Beyond preservation:the challenge of ecological restoration – can you live with ambiguity or do you want to be in charge? A practitioner turned researcher’s tale
Needingworth Quarry is the location for an exciting wetland restoration project arising from a collaboration between Hanson and the RSPB. As gravel extraction is completed in sections of Needingworth these areas are being restored into wetland habitats, including large areas of reedbed and associated rough grassland, which has been named Ouse Fen Nature Reserve. Reedbed restoration sites, typified by Needingworth also include areas of wet or dry rough grassland, with varying degrees of management through grazing, mowing and fencing. These grasslands in themselves potentially provide a valuable habitat for biodiversity, especially given the context of the considerable intensification of agricultural and other grasslands that has taken place over recent decades.
In this project we propose to investigate the insect biodiversity of grasslands surrounding the reedbed restoration units at Needingworth/Ouse Fen. The focus of our work will be the leafhoppers (Auchenorrhyncha), which are common in grassland and have been found to be useful indicators of management intensity effects. In particular we are interested in how leafhoppper communities are affected by the level of grazing by cattle and how they vary with distance from the reedbeds and open water. The principal objective is to increase our knowledge of insect communities in these habitats at Needingworth/Ouse Fen and to inform management practice decisions in relation to these grasslands, which it is hoped will help to further enhance the biodiversity value of the restoration.
The project won the 1st Prize in National Quarry Life Award in 2014 in the United Kingdom.

Food production was increased by 300 Percent in Farm trials in Asia, by gardening with volcanic rock dust & effective micro organisms. Additionally, the nutrient value of food was dramatically increase. Furthermore, using volcanic rock dust & effective micro organisms help the crops to resist pests & diseases. Effective micro organisms facilitate in the rapid breaking down of the volcanic rock dust into molecules that the crops can easily absorb; thus reducing the need for expensive chemical fertilizers and pesticides, resulting in more PROFITS & healthier people.
Wading birds have declined across Europe as the intensification of lowland agriculture has caused severe habitat destruction and degradation. Aggregates extraction sites present areas of exposed fine sediments deposited as waste material in silt lagoons which could recreate lost wader habitat. This project explores the value of silt lagoons for wading birds by investigating sediment composition, invertebrate food availability and monitoring bird activity at Wykeham quarry.
This project won the 3rd Prize in the International Quarry Life Award in 2012 and the 1st Prize in National Quarry Life Award in 2012 in the United Kingdom.

Abstract
The research aims to analyze the trend of land and vegetation cover dynamics over the period from 1976, 1986 2000 and 2007 thus examine the conservation status of the area and generate
up-to-date land cover map. Information is extracted from various Satellite images of multidated Landsat, ASTER and MODIS images. The Landsat images are the basic remote sensing data to generate the thematic maps which are further analyzed to show the cover dynamics in the park for 24years. All datas from the satellite images are processesed and analyzed using digital image processing techniques. Besides, different vector data are extracted from the images as well as other thematic maps. MODIS-NDVI images are analyzed for the different land cover classes and each vegetation cover seasonal response is compared for the year 2000 and 2005.
The land cover classes identified in the study area from 1976, 1986, 2000 and 2007 are water body, riparian and ground water (GW) forest, wood land, dense bush land, bushy shrubbed grass land, open grass land, degraded grass land, cultivated land, swamp vegetation and bare
land. Rate of land cover change and fragmentation of habitat were discussed for the different
land cover classes. Rate of land cover change, fragmentation index and land cover conversion
matrix clearly shows the dynamics of the different cover classes has happened for the past decades and generally the park conservation status is found to be poor. Bush encroachment in the study area is a major challenge to the park particularly for the grass land and overgrazing
on the Nechisar plain has caused expansion of invasive plants erosion and land degradation.
The community livelihood dependency both in the rural and urban setting is concluded and discussed as a challenge to the park from biodiversity conservation point of view.

Tracking sand dune transformation before, during and after sand dune mining,...Richard Thackway
Unmodified landscapes are transformed by the removal of vegetation prior to, during sand mining and through restoration, after mining. Bridge Hill Ridge is presented as a case study for the application of a standardised national system (VAST-2) to account for ecological changes before, during and after mining. Bridge Hill Ridge is a high coastal sand dune, part of the Myall Lakes National Park, NSW. A reference state was defined for the unmodified unmined Blackbutt (Eucalyptus pilularis) and smooth barked apple (Angophora costata) open forest, comprising ten ecological characteristics, integrated with 22 indicators. This information provided the basis for assessing change and trend over time in regard to mining and restoration. Relevant sources of ecological data and information pertaining to the ten ecological characteristics and 22 indicators were compiled and analysed relative to the reference states. Key researchers and land managers who had worked on the site were contacted and interviewed. A field visit was conducted in mid-January 2014 to validate assessment of change and trend, almost 40 years after mine restoration. The effects of land management practices, i.e. mining and restoration, upon the unmodified Eucalypt open forest plant community were assessed relative to the reference state to determine the relative change and trend in the ten ecological characteristics and 22 indicators over time. Reporting standardized indicators helps land managers and other decision makers to understand the nature of change and trend in regard to predicted future states; to make adjustments in rehabilitation activities (e.g. hydrological interventions, control of weeds and feral animals, mitigation of wildfire, and management of people). The benefits of integrated monitoring and reporting using a standardised report card provides a simple tool to inform inform stakeholders of progress towards agreed target/s of vegetation structure, species composition and regenerative capacity (landscape function).

This paper presents Reef, a system for generating publicly verifiable succinct non-interactive zero-knowledge proofs that a committed document matches or does not match a regular expression. We describe applications such as proving the strength of passwords, the provenance of email despite redactions, the validity of oblivious DNS queries, and the existence of mutations in DNA. Reef supports the Perl Compatible Regular Expression syntax, including wildcards, alternation, ranges, capture groups, Kleene star, negations, and lookarounds. Reef introduces a new type of automata, Skipping Alternating Finite Automata (SAFA), that skips irrelevant parts of a document when producing proofs without undermining soundness, and instantiates SAFA with a lookup argument. Our experimental evaluation confirms that Reef can generate proofs for documents with 32M characters; the proofs are small and cheap to verify (under a second).
