Alexander Dianin was a Russian chemist who first compounded Bisphenol A, during the year
1891. Bisphenol A is commonly referred to as BPA. Dianin was carrying out studies on phenol
compounds and synthesized BPA by condensing acetone with two equivalent parts of phenol. The A
in BPA denotes acetone in its composition. (1)
At first, the development of BPA was solely an academic exercise. Dianin was the chair of the
Chemistry Department / Imperial Medial Academy in St. Petersburg, Russia. (2) Modern organic
chemistry was in its beginning phases and the potential benefits from combining organic
compounds were being envisioned. Reports of BPA synthesis was first published in Eastern
European chemistry journals and eventually appeared in Western journals. For decades, BPA was
referred to only as: Dianin s Compound. (3) By today s organic chemistry standards, BPA is a
relatively simple molecule and is easy to produce industrially. However, in 1891, BPA s synthesis
was a remarkable discovery. BPA s laboratory synthesis demonstrated that the simplest member of

prophecy; the women had very low expectations of the student s work performance (McShane
