Classification Meccan
No. of Verses 8
Category Mufasal
WHERE AND WHEN/ WHY WAS IT REVEALED?
Numerous commentators believe that this Surah has been revealed in Mecca; then the subject mentioned in the
Surah about vying and self-glorification is, customarily, referring to the tribes of Quraish who used to boast to
each other, in vain, about worthless affairs.
But, some others, such as the late Tabarsi who cited his idea in Majma'-al-Bayan, believe that the Surah was
revealed in Medina, and what is said is it about vying and boasting in each other's sight refers to the Jews or to
two tribes among the 'Ansar'. But, regarding the close similarity that this Surah, being Meccan, has with the
Meccan Suras, seems more proper.
The content of the Surah in general is firstly, a scorn on those people who, based on things of no value, boast
to each other and secondly, there is a warning about the proposition of the Hereafter and the Hell-fire; and
finally, warning that we will be questioned about the bounties in our life.
Commentators believe that this Surah was revealed against the tribes who vied in boasting with one another
and prided themselves on increasing their wealth, position, and the number of their adherents so to add to the
number of men in each tribe, they even went to the cemetery and counted the tribal graves.
THE VANITY OF WORLDLY COMFORTANDMAN’S RIVALRY FOR IT
The word ‘ALHAKUM’ is from the word ‘LAHV’ which means
heedlessness. In Arabic, this word is used for every occupation which
engrosses man to the extent that he becomes heedless of the important
things in life.
The word ‘TAKATHUR’ is from KATHRAT/KATHRA/KATHEER which
means a lot or plentifulness.
Therefore, alhakum at-takathur would mean, ‘greed for more and
more has occupied you so much that its pursuit has made you
heedless of every higher thing in life’. This applies to all the gains
and benefits, pleasures and comforts, power and authority, etc.
It talks about the insatiable needs of man. Prophet ‫ﷺ‬ ‫ﷴ‬ said “if the son
of Adam had a valley of gold. He would desire another like it.
Allah SWT is warning us all about the evil consequences of worldly worship i.e. spending our
entire life acquiring more and more wealth, worldly material, benefits, power, position and the
likes.
This rivalry with one another, bragging and boasting about acquisitions never ends until once
death. (SUBHANALLAH).
Al Bukhari recorded from Anas bin Malik that the Messenger of Allah ‫ﷺ‬ said “3 things follow
the deceased person and two returns while one remain behind with him. The things that follow
him are his family, his wealth and his deeds. His family and wealth return while his deed
remains.
This shows that the worldly pleasure which man has striven for all his life has no benefit for
him when he dies or in the hereafter.
The cause of man’s destruction is mutual rivalry for worldly gains and real success is in
working for the hereafter
WHATARE THE THINGS THAT DELUDE US IN DUNYA?
1. The desire of having a lot – For example, I want more money, a better car, a bigger
house.
2. Competing with others in getting a lot – For example, competing in wanting to get
a better job than someone else. Even in petty things like competing in wanting a better
chair than a friend at school or colleague at workplace, getting a bigger slice of cake.
3. Taking pride in the fact that you have more – For example, getting a brand new
car every year, moving to a bigger house and showing it off to friends with statements
like “I got it before you did.”
4. Wanting more and more - No one desires frugal living. The one thing that unites
humans is the fact that we always want MORE.
THE 5 QUESTIONS
Then, on that Day, you shall be asked about the delight (you indulged in, in this world)!
Then on that day you shall be questioned about the boons and favours (which you enjoyed in the
previous life)
A Good hadith reported by Iman At-Tirmidhi
Prophet ‫ﷺ‬ ‫ﷴ‬ said ‘ the son of Adam will not pass away from Allah SWT until he is asked about 5
things:
1. How he lived his life,
2. How he utilized his youth
3. With what means did he earn his wealth,
4. How did he spend his wealth,
5. What did he do with his knowledge
DEATH AND BARZARKH; SUFFICIENT ANDADMONITION
• DEATH
Everyone who lives in this world has to die at his appointed time, for Allah
says in the Quran "every soul shall taste death“ Quran 3: verse 185.
• BARZARKH
Barzarkh is a barrier between two things, it is the stage between this world
and the other world, From the time of death until the time of resurrection.
The life of man is divided in three (3) stages
(1)The life of this world which ends in death
(2)Then in al-barzakh which starts after death and ends when the hour begins
(3)The life of the hereafter which begins after the people are raised from their
graves.
Allah says that all are preoccupied by love of the world , its delights and it's adornments,
and this distracts you from seeking the hereafter and desiring it.
This delays you until death comes to you and you visit the graves, thus becoming its
inhabitants .
Two favours are treated unjustly by most people Health and free time.
This means that the people are lacking gratitude to them. Therefore, whoever does not
maintain the right that is obligatory upon him, then he is unjust ,
Imam Ahmed recorded from Abu Hurayrah that Prophet ‫ﷺ‬ ‫ﷴ‬ said "Allah the Mighty and
Majestic says on the Day of judgment .
"O son of Adam I made you ride upon the horses and camels, I gave you women to marry,
and I made you reside and rule ( in the earth) so where is the thanks for that".
EACH SOUL SHALL ACCOUNT FOR ALLAH’S FAVOUR
The companions lead a very difficult life in the early parts of Madina, before the conquest began. Madina was a very difficult
place to live in. The main income source of the people there was from the date trees. Dates were there for only one season,
once that ran out, you would live a very difficult life in the middle of the desert for the rest of the six months or so.
Once on such time, Umar ibn Al-khattab (R) was walking in the streets and he saw the Prophet ‫ﷺ‬ ‫ﷴ‬ sitting. This was at
noon, and at noon, nobody walks in the summer time. So he asks the Prophet, O Prophet of Allah, what are you doing
outside?
Prophet ‫ﷺ‬ ‫ﷴ‬ knows that Umar is outside for one reason and that, is that he does not have food at home. So he says, the
same reason as you!
So, as they are sitting there, they saw Abu Bakr (R) walking as well. So the three of them joined, sitting there just talking.
Another companion named Abul Haytam was rushing back to home from work, sees them and asks, O Prophet of Allah,
what are you doing at this time of the day?
Umar replied, well we did not have anything to eat so we are sitting here basically just talking. Hearing this, Abul Haytam
says – No, this isn’t possible that the three best people among us are suffering in hunger. He knew he had an old goat at
home, so he asks them to come to his home. He rushes home and sacrifices his old goat and prepares meal with his wife.
Later, Prophet ‫ﷺ‬ ‫,ﷴ‬ Abu Bakr (R) and Umar (R) comes and they are served meat and bread – which was the most luxurious
food item of that time and even today that is the case.
So what was the response of Prophet ‫ﷺ‬ ‫ﷴ‬ after having this meal? He reminded Abu Bakr (R) and
Umar (R) that they left their houses empty and Allah gave them this meal.
Then, on that Day, you shall be asked about the delight (you indulged in, in this world)! (102:8)
Allah is going to ask you on that day, about this food – what did you do with it and did you thank
HIM enough for it?
Subhanallah, we get great meals three times a day and we don’t even think about Allah’s
blessing. While here, the Prophet is so conscious that you are going to be asked about this
blessing. The lesson here is that we should always thank Allah for all the blessings he has given
us and the same time be mindful about how we are utilizing that blessing.
Everything we have and enjoy is from Allah and Allah will ask us about it. What did we do with
it? Did we enjoy it? Throw it away? Allah has given us these blessings to make us humble.
We should take a lesson from prophet Suliaman (A.S) by reciting a du’a he made for
gratefulness.
So he (Sulaiman) smiled, amused at her speech and said: “My Lord! Grant me the power
and ability that I may be grateful for Your favors which You have bestowed on me and on
my parents, and that I may do righteous good deeds that will please You, and admit me by
Your mercy among Your righteous servants.”
Surah An-Naml (27:19)
REAFFIRMED THREAT
• Some people are under the delusion that the abundance of the worldly goods and surpassing others
in it is real progress and success, whereas the opposite is the case.
• Allah severely threatened them and REAFFIRMED HIS THREAT in these Ayah's Nay! Soon
you will know. Then Nay! Soon you will know.”( i.e. soon they will know its evil end and they
will realize that it was a stupendous error in which they remained involved throughout their life)
• Repeating same message again and again indicates its significance and urgency for attention i.e.
wake up and realize where you are headed before you visit your grave.
• When we will reach our graves, it is then when we will finally wake up. It is then when we are
going to realize the reality of life; where we spent our precious hours and what did we bring with
ourselves in our graves?
• It is narrated that Amir-al-Mu'mineen Ali (AS), said:
• "Some of us were in doubt about the chastisement in the grave until the time that Surah Thakathur
was revealed, (the verse) says:
• ‘Nay! You shall soon know - which indicated (the punishment) in the grave, and (the verse)
• ‘Again, nay! You shall soon know - (refers to it) in the Hereafter.”
JAHEEM
Here we see “Jaheem” being mentioned.
“Verily, you shall see the blazing fire (hell)”.
Jaheem, is one of the names and a level of the hellfire among 6 others which are;
1. Jahannam,
2. Ladhaa,
3. Al-Hutamah,
4. As-Sa’eer,
5. Saqar
6. Al-Hawiyah.
This level or gate is been described as, A pit, one big piece of hot coal that is bigger than the lowest heaven.
And the kind of people that will be placed in this level of hellfire, are; Those who do not have correct belief in
Allah or those who refuse to give the creation their rights, which is the most important right after the right of
Allah (SWT) and did not encourage the feeding of the poor. As indicated in the Quran, (Al Haqq:30-34).
If we truly understand the nature of the hellfire, we would fear it as it should be feared. The fire of the hell is
more severe and intense compared to the fire of the dunya. Prophet ‫ﷺ‬ ‫ﷴ‬ said, “Your ordinary fire is 1 of 70
parts of the hell fire”. Someone said, “O Prophet ‫ﷺ‬ ‫ﷴ‬ , this ordinary fire would have been sufficient (as a
punishment)!” Prophet ‫ﷺ‬ ‫ﷴ‬ said, “The hellfire has 69 parts more than the ordinary (worldly) fire, each part is as
hot as this (worldly) fire”. (Bukhari)
The best wordy investment are the good deeds we do with the blessings Allah bestows
upon us in this dunya as we will be questioned about everything Allah gave us.
Abu hurairah Radiyallaju anhu narrates that Prophet ‫ﷺ‬ ‫ﷴ‬ said; Indeed among the
actions and good deeds for which a believer will continue to receive rewards even after
his death are:
1) Knowledge which he taught and spread
2) Righteous children whom he left behind
3) The Quran which he left as an inheritance
4) A Masjid he built
5) A rest house which he built for travelers
6) A stream which he caused to flow
7) A charity that he gave from his wealth while he was alive and healthy
For all this he will continue to receive rewards after his death (Ibn Majah)

• Alhakum uttakathur: Mutual Rivalry in (seeking) worldly increase distracts you from God
(Sahih Bukhari, Book 81 of Ar-Riqaq Chapter 15 Hadith No 6446)
Richness is not abundance of property and possessions but richness is self-contentment.”
A lot of rich people, they are not contented
-because they are worried about their wealth,
-they say, if we lose our wealth, we lose our status in the society.
-and these are the people who don’t like to give charity.
-like if you want some money for Deen, Islamic dawah needs
-some will donate & yet some will not because they care for their wealth.
A contented heart values and appreciates whatever comes its way and is not bother about worldly things as such does not
spend most of its time pilling up worldly things.
The Messenger of Allah (SAW) also said: "There is no jealousy except with respect to two people: A man who Allah
has given wealth and he uses it up for the sake of the Truth and a man whom Allah has given wisdom and he decides
by it and acts accordingly." (Bukhari and Muslim).
