Attendees will walk away with a research agenda and the necessary tools to help them conduct research on their campus as part of the National DETA Research Center initiative. The DETA Center seeks to identify and evaluate effective course and institutional practices in online learning (including competency-based education) for underrepresented learners.

They seek to foster student access and success through evidence-based, cross-institutional online learning practices and technologies. Specifically, DETA looks to identify and evaluate effective course and institutional practices in blended and online learning, including competency-based education, for underrepresented populations through rigorous research.
This workshop looks to engage the blended learning community in assisting of the development of DETA's research agenda, including a research model for distance education and research toolkits that can be used by institutions across the country. Through collaborative group discussions, this workshop will look for participants to brainstorm and prioritize ideas around defining student success, identifying key research questions to drive future research, development of shared measures to be gathered by different institutions, creation of instrumentation, and more. The outcomes of this workshop will inform research conducted in 2016. Further, opportunities for community engagement, including funding to conduct cross-institutional research, will be discussed.

UWM has partnered with the University of Wisconsin System, UW-Extension, Milwaukee Area Technical College (MATC), EDUCAUSE Learning Initiative (ELI), and leaders across the nation to develop a research model. This model is to promote student access and success through evidence-based online learning practices and learning technologies.
The DETA Center looks to identify and evaluate effective course and institutional practices in online learning (including competency-based education) for underrepresented individuals (i.e., economically disadvantaged, adult learners, disabled) through rigorous research. Furthermore, although the research currently is focused on postsecondary U.S. institutions, the DETA Center looks to advance their work in K-12 and internationally -- all are welcome!
This workshop will prepare attendees to take a plan back to their own institution to successfully gather research on blended and online teaching and learning.

This session explores some of the mystery surrounding research by looking at some of the practical approaches to undertaking it and by providing insights into the challenges and benefits of the research methods available.

The Microsoft Platform for Education Analytics (MPEA) is an integrated technology architecture connecting all people across primary and secondary schools with the information they need to direct their actions in a manner consistent with the goals and priorities of the educational institution. The model is differentiated from more common approaches that focus primarily on business intelligence (BI) tools. The Microsoft® approach incorporates BI as a component of a more comprehensive architecture that unifies quantitative analytics with qualitative assessment within a familiar collaborative environment. The integrated architecture is targeted at aligning daily activities with strategic priorities and capturing front-line observations that inform strategic planning. The MPEA is not something that educational institutions need to “go buy.” In fact, the overwhelming majority of primary and secondary schools already license and use many of the Microsoft products that comprise the key components of the architecture. It is the underlying Microsoft technologies that enable broad and impactful adoption across educational institutions because they are both affordable and familiar. This is, however, a comprehensive approach that educational executives must lead. Successful utilisation of this model is primarily dependent upon executive leadership guiding a scholastic commitment to foster a culture of evidence and accountability corresponding directly to mission, vision, and goals. This paper describes the Microsoft Platform for Education Analytics and explains how technology that is already owned (affordable) and already used (familiar) can be broadly adopted across primary and secondary schools. This platform supports a culture where goal-focused and evidence-based behaviour optimises school resources toward balanced goal attainment across administrative efficiencies (business), academic outcomes (learning), and constituent relationships (lifestyle). Working towards goals across the educational institution leads to fulfilling the primary and secondary schools’ mission and advancing the institutional vision.

APPRAISAL OF GROUND WATER CHARACTERISTICS AND WATER QUALITY INDEX OF RICH IRO...AM Publications
Bellary is a rich iron ore city in Karnataka; it is experienced degradation due to rapid urbanization and mining activity. The hydro-chemical investigation in the present study is restricted to the major ions concentrations, distributions, their relative abundance, and the pattern of the variability in groundwater chemistry. The present work is aimed at assessing the water quality index (WQI) for the groundwater of rich iron mineral city. For calculating the WQI, the following 16 parameters have been considered: turbidity, pH, EC, TDS, Total hardness, calcium, magnesium, total alkalinity, Bicarbonate, carbonate, chloride, Fluoride, Nitrate, Sulphate, sodium and potassium. The WQI for these samples ranges from 79.1 to 180.2 the maximum value of 180.2 is observed in the sample 3 (ATP Road) of rich iron mineral city, while the minimum is recorded in 9 (Bislahalli). The high value of WQI has been found to be mainly from the higher values of nitrate, total dissolved solids, hardness, fluorides, bicarbonate and chlorides in the groundwater. The results of analyses have been used to suggest models for predicting water quality. The analysis reveals that the groundwater of the area needs some degree of treatment before consumption, and it also needs to be protected from the perils of contamination. Water Quality Index, has been calculated for the Rich iron mineral city and was studied for the suitability of water for drinking purposes and the results showed that 28% of the ground water quality was poor quality category and localities are scoring a water quality index greater than 100. The continuous monitoring of groundwater is required in the rich iron mineral city to protect water in future from any possible contamination due to growing industrialization and agricultural practices.

It is a space for researchers to come together, get feedback on their work, and share any opportunities for collaborations for grants, research, publications, etc. These Collaborative Meetings are held in January, April, July, and October.
Pathways to Learning: Open Collaboration to Support the Online Pivot Robert Farrow
This presentation reports results of a recent open education research collaboration between The African Council for Distance Education and The Open University (UK). Pathways to Learning: new approaches in higher education (OpenLearn, 2020a) hosted two free professional development programmes for university lecturers, instructional designers, professional staff, and managers who share responsibility for providing quality distance and online learning.
• A Teacher Educator programme, Skills for 21st Century Learning and Teaching (OpenLearn, 2020b)
• A Tertiary Educator programme, Take Your Teaching Online (OpenLearn, 2020c)
The courses ran over six weeks between 13th July and 20th August, 2020, and was contextualized by a rapid rollout of online learning during the Coronavirus pandemic. The programmes combined a course of study using OER materials with supplementary activities including a total of 12 webinars and interactive events alongside use of new platforms created by The Open University’s Institute of Educational Technology: nQuire (Herodotou et al., 2018) and Our Journey (Coughlan et al., 2019).
Key findings:
• The pandemic led to a substantial shift in teaching across Africa and a requirement to better understand and gain experience of online learning. Change is likely to persist post-pandemic, although infrastructure and cultural barriers are reported.
• The project surveys, interviews and the data generated through interactions that occurred in the programmes explores challenges and opportunities for online and blended learning across the African continent and globally.
• The evaluation data provides evidence that the programmes led to important understanding of course design and confidence in online facilitation for a large majority of those who took part in them.
• There is evidence that the programmes built confidence, particularly through the experiences of these educators themselves learning online with well-designed materials, and engaging with platforms and experts.
• There is evidence that each of the elements and activities were appreciated by some learners. The open courses were seen as most useful alongside some webinars. Community events and forums added substantial value to these.
• The flexibility offered in the programmes led to different behaviours. Many aimed to complete all the available activities despite time pressures and other barriers. Some were unable to attend live events so recordings were appreciated.
• Given the courses were free to join and many educators faced barriers and pressures, retention figures were very positive with around 66% of those who took part in the first week completing the rest of these programmes.
• Assessment, Open Educational Resources (OER), and understanding of technologies that can be used for online learning and learning design were areas that learners reported as being particularly valuable.

An OER-based degree, sometimes referred to as a Zero-Textbook-Cost degree, is a pathway to a degree or credential with no textbook costs. Faculty have redesigned the courses in the pathway to use open educational resources (OER) instead of traditional commercial textbooks and early research shows students are succeeding as well or better than peers in traditional courses while saving up to 25% on the cost of attendance. Additional research has shown that a college may be able to increase tuition revenue through increased student persistence and success in these pathways.
With the largest OER degree grant initiative of its kind launched last year at 38 colleges in 13 U.S. states, Achieving the Dream, has undertaken research to look at the academic and financial impact to students and their institutions. Grant partners SRI, along with partner rpk GROUP, is conducting research and evaluation to identify impact and cost as well as the facilitators and barriers to successful implementation of this model. Join us to hear from the researchers about methodology, benefits and challenges for colleges, and findings from the first semester of the grant.

Open Education Research: Insights from the Global OER Graduate Network (GO-GN)Robert Farrow
This presents an overview of the Global OER Graduate Network (GO-GN) Research Methods Handbook. The aims of the GO-GN are:
- to raise the profile of research into open education,
- to offer support for those conducting PhD research in this area, and
- to develop openness as a process of research.
More than 100 doctoral and post-doctoral researchers form the core of the network with more than 200 experts, supervisors, mentors and interested parties forming a community of practice.
The Handbook was developed by members of the network who are researchers in open education, and serves as a useful starting point for anyone wishing to do research in education with a focus on OER, MOOCs or OEP.
To contextualise this approach, an accessible and brief description of the types of methods typically used in research into education and educational technology will be provided. Some of the contrasting philosophical, epistemological and ontological commitments of different research paradigms will be described. Theoretical perspectives will be outlined (though not fully explored).
The Handbook benefits from a range of illustrations (courtesy of Bryan Mathers) which are intended to make the Handbook more relatable and accessible. Reflections on the process of creating the visual journey will be shared.
Finally, the presentation will offer up for discussion a provisional model of open scholarship including open practices (agile project management; directly influencing practice; radical transparency; sharing research instruments; social media presence; networks); open science (open access; open data; open licensing); digital innovation (HCI; data science; open source technologies); and normative elements (challenging dominant narratives; promoting social justice; and reducing barriers to educational access).
Learning Outcomes:
- Delegates will benefit from an overview of research methods in open education
- Processes of open collaboration to produce a manuscript will be shared
- Supporting critical reflection on practice
