Super Metroid is the third game in the Metroid sci-fi franchise featuring the protagonist Samus Aran. This project will adapt Super Metroid into a 40-minute feature film. It will follow Samus as she travels to the Space Pirates' base on planet Zebes to retrieve a stolen baby Metroid and save the universe from the Space Pirates' plans to use the Metroids' power. The film aims to capture the isolation and exploration of the game through shots that emphasize Samus' small size against large environments and enemies, while moving the story forward through a balance of monologue and dialogue. The target audience is those aged 10-25 interested in action sci-fi.
2. What is Super Metroid?
Super Metroid is the 3rd game in a series of sci-fi
Nintendo games. Super Metroid is one of the best
received games in the its franchise, for its console and
indeed all time. Because of this, I selected to adapt
Super Metroid rather than any other game in the
franchise. This project will be the first official adaptation
of a game excluding the Metroid manga which focuses
on story elements in and between games. This project
will turn the game Super Metroid into a 40 minute
feature film.
3. Genre
Creators of Metroid franchise, Gunpei Yokoi and
Shigeru Miyamoto have stated that the Metroid takes
inspiration from from the 79 sci-fi horror film ‘Alien’.
Both have a female protagonist who faces an isolated
space setting in order to combat dangerous aliens.
Because of this, the film I will be making will have some
comparisons to the Ridley Scott film.
4. Narrative
The story follows protagonist Samus Aran and will start at the end of
Metroid 2 to give context to the story. Metroids are a parasitic life
form that has the ability to drain life energy from organic hosts and
Space Pirates want to use this power to take over the universe so
Samus has been tasked with destroying all the parasites on their
homeworld, SR388 before the Space Pirates can use them. Samus
discovers an egg which hatches to become the last remaining
metroid in the universe which she takes to a galactic federation
science lab to be examined. Shortly after, Samus receives a distress
call from the lab which is attacked and the baby metroid stolen by the
Space Pirate, Ridley. Samus must travel to the Space Pirates base
on planet Zebes to retrieve the Metroid and save the universe.
5. Constraints and Opportunities
Super Metroid’s famed for its ability to instil a sense of
isolation and exploration in the player. The exploration
will be difficult to represent in a movie format as the
audience don’t have control of the character, however
by having the orange power suit contrast the dark
caves of planet Zebes will emphasis the feeling of
isolation. In addition, numerous wide shots will be used
to demonstrate the scale of how large each area and
enemy boss is in comparison to Samus. A variety of
diverse alien environments will add to the feeling of
isolation, locals such as a space station, a jungle, an
aquatic laboratory and magma caverns.
6. Target Audience
My primary audience will be between aged 10-25 of both
genders of socio economic group E and D as they have
disposable income and are an age group that are most
interested in action, which this film will have a good
number of between the exploration of the planet.
Secondary audience will consist of sci-fi fans aged 25-35
7. Cinematic Ideas
Metroid Other M was the 2010 addition to the Metroid
franchise and its graphic style was very well received so
the film will reflect this art style in its animation. The film
will also similarities to the metroid franchise as there is
little dialogue and a good portion of the story is delivered
through monologue however, in order to make a more
coherent story.
