Summary
Typography
The First thing I found out about the typography was that most magazines uses the san serif
I think they use this mostly because it looks rather cool and makes it seema lot more laid
back and simple as its clear but it is also very simplistic. The type itself is usually quite bold
and is in black so it stands out to the audience more. The typography is one of the main
parts to rap magazines as its one of the first things the audience will see when they look at
the magazine, so it needs to be clear. The most used type was bubble writing this made it
look bigger so it was a lot easier for the audience to see what was going on in the magazine,
it also makes the magazine look a lot more eccentric and more laid back than other
magazines. The san serif makes most magazines look a lot more sophisticated so that’s why I
am going to use it when I create my own magazine. Most of the typography used in the
magazines was focusing on getting the headlines right and the other little bits didn’t seem
as important when typography comes to mind. The masthead and the cover are usually in a
bigger size font than most of the other things that are in the magazine.
Colour
The colour was one of the most important pieces of the magazines because it’s what the
audience see, most of the colours used were quite plain because the target audience was an
older age so they don’t want to use bright colours as it would make the magazine look a lot
more childish and the rap magazines are usually a lot more formal. Most of the magazines
used black, white and red, they used these to make the magazine look more bland and
serious, because most magazines that are aimed at older people will have colours just like
these, so for my magazine I might use some bland colours just like most magazines I have
looked at. The black and white makes any information on the magazine clear so it helps to
make it easier for the audience to read what is on the magazine. Most of the images used
are in colour this helps to draw the attention of the image to the reader as most of the
images that are coloured have writing by the side that is black and white. This helps me a lot
to know what colours I should use and whether or not I should keep it simple.
Language
The language used in most of the magazines was formal, this helps to keep the magazine
formal all the way through, and this also draws me to the conclusion that most of the rap
magazines are aimed at older people. Some language that is used a lot in each magazine
that I analysed was “inside interviews” and most of the magazine mainly focused on the
image and what the name was of the person that was in the image. The language is very
important because it needs to draw the audience into looking at the magazine, most of the
magazines I looked at they had different special reports about different celebrities and it
also had the latest gossip. I believe I would use these kind of techniques to draw the
audience into reading my magazine as it makes the magazine seem unique and would also
make the audience want to see what’s in it as it seems mysterious.
Images
The images used were mostly of well-known rap artists this helps the audience to recognise
who they are reading about and also it would most probably appeal to the fans of each of
these artists, the magazine publishers are basically using an audience pleasure celebrity
endorsement. I also found out that the clothing within the magazine and image of the artist,
this helps to also draw people in as many people enjoy having the most known look and
fashion, most of these magazines promoted the newest fashion by making the artist wear it.
The celebrities that are shown in the magazines usually have a certain pose in this case most
of the magazines I looked at the artists had an image that they looked quite scary and they
also looked as if they had abit of attitude, rap is conventional for this so I think when I do my
own magazine I will use some of these techniques to draw the audience in. Image is one of
the most important things within the magazines because they are what the audience first
look at as soon as they see a magazine.
Mode of address
The mode of address is used to attract the audience into the magazine and I would want to
do that with my magazine when I am making mine. The text used is rather simple in most of
the magazine this makes it a lot easier for the audience to understand it as they don’t really
want to be thinking about what each word means so if you keep it simple the audience
would rather read your magazine. Usually the magazines to do with rap are formal but most
of the other magazines are in formal but because rap is targeted at an older audience it has
to be more adult friendly. Most of the magazines use language which the audience wouldn’t
usually use on a day to day basis so when the magazine uses these sorts of words then it
helps them escape from their normal lives for a little while.
