Summary Of Self Respect By Didion
Weekly Critique 2 Summary of the reading Self–Respect by Didion is an essay that compares a lot
of things about self–respect to our lives. In the beginning of the Self–Respect essay, the author talks
about the situation she experienced when she was nineteen years old which had to do with the
failure to be pledged to a college honor society. She did not have the grades to qualify her to be
pledged into the honor society, which made her come to a realization that we are not handed out
things in life rather, we have to earn them "no winning smiles will do over here, no pretty drawn
lines of good intentions" (Didion 2). She also realized that we are not judged in this life based on
who we are but on what we have done to earn them and that made her feel a loss of innocence "the
day I did not make Phi Beth Kappa nonetheless marked the end of something and innocence may
well be the word for it" (Didion 2) hence making her understand that all situations have a
consequence. This essay compares people with no self–respect to children sleeping in the bed they
made for themselves showing us that children who did not make well supported beds did not sleep
well at night. This shows us that people without self–respect lacked the very foundation to teach
them about it "the measure of slipping prestige is that one tends to think only of homely children"
(Didion 4). She also lets us understand that the things we do to earn respect as children is not the
same we do as adults. The things she

Self Respect Is A Very Powerful Term
Neel Bhagat ENG 111 September 09, 2015 Self–respect is a very powerful term. Self–respect is
something that has to be earned; it has to be earned from you for yourself. Self–respect has to be
learned by oneself, nobody is born with self–respect for himself or herself; it's not an instinct. Many
people take pride in their sense of self–respect. Self–respect is a vital part of ones existence. Self–
respect is developed throughout a persons lifetime through many different experiences and
encounters with other people, oneself and society. According to Merriam–Webster collegiate
dictionary the meaning of self–respect is 1: "a proper respect of oneself as a human being" 2:
"regard for one's own standing or position". Self–respect can come in many shapes and forms. There
is no mandated definition for this word. It is all what meaning you make of it. Self–respect is
essential when it comes to making decisions for one self. The level of self–respect you have for
yourself determines how good you are at making judgments for yourself and others. Lets say you
are going out to dinner with your friends and your friend is a really cheap as a person, and will make
the excuse of saying that he forgot his wallet at home and will ask you to cover for him this time and
that he will pay you back whenever he sees you next. Next time you see him you guys go out to a
movie and you want him to pay you back, but you have a certain sense of self respect and you don't
want to be the one to remind him

Presentation of self outline Essay
Critical appreciation: Erving Goffman; The presentation of self in everyday life.
Erving Goffman was one of the most important Sociologists in the 20th century who focussed his
study on aspects of social life. It is often argued that Goffman was "one of the twentieth century's
most remarkable practitioners of social science" (Smith, 2006:1). He was born on the 11th June
1922 in Alberta, Canada. His parents were Jewish and part of the group of Ukrainians who moved to
Canada before the beginning of the First World War. Initially Goffman studied Chemistry before
moving to the University of Toronto to study Anthropology and Sociology where he gained an
understanding in Durkheim, Warner, Freud and Parsons. Goffman's wife killed herself ... Show more

He also implies how an individual will be focussed on making a favourable show of him (a good
impression) which gives another explanation to why humans can be seen as actors in situations of
social interaction, they act how they think the audience (observers) want them to act. To summarise
his chapter on presentation Goffman's primary assumption is that individuals differ not by their
specific qualities, but by the situations they find themselves in to which they adopt different 'roles'
to perform for the "observer".
For this work Goffman gained inspiration from his own personal experiences, as his wife struggled
with mental illness and he chose to travel to the Shetland Islands to study the interaction in their
society. His wife's illness may have shaped his argument as another key piece of his work was
Asylums where he carried out fieldwork in a hospital where he wished to look at the social world of
an inmate. In his findings he was very critical and stated how behaviour that was deemed out of the
ordinary was simply someone not conforming to the rules and expectations of society. If those rules
or norms/values are broken that person would be viewed as an outsider and therefore displays an
inability to play the role of an "actor".
A key theorist behind his work is Herbert Mead who published a book Mind, Self and Society and
he looked at the experiences of human beings and

Teen Choir: Music Analysis
As a member of the Catholic Church, one of my favorite features of the Mass has always been the
music. My love for singing was cultivated here, first through joining the Children's Choir in grade
school and then in the Teen Choir throughout junior high and high school. As I got older, I would
even lead the music by myself on occasion. Having been away at college these last few years, I have
not been able to sing as much as I would have liked, other than during breaks and for holidays such
as Christmas or Easter. However, this semester I have taken on a leadership role in the Teen Choir to
assist the head sponsor, Amy, while she is battling cancer for the second time. After organizing the
music, setting up equipment, and working with the other choir members, I found that Amy, these
teens, and the congregation at Church, were not the only people who benefited from my
involvement in the music ministry; my self–esteem has been positively affected as well. ... Show

This measure comes in two degrees: high and low. For example, people with high self–esteem tend
to feel good about themselves, while those with low self–esteem think poorly of themselves.
Although many people, myself included, frequently associate self–esteem with body image, it
involves much more than how you feel about your physical appearance; how you feel about your
capabilities and achievements affect your self–esteem too. It is suggested that self–esteem can be
increased by "attacking self–destructive beliefs, seeking out nourishing people, working on projects
that will result in success, and securing affirmation" (DeVito 60–61). Additionally, self–esteem can
influence how you communicate with others and how they communicate with you. Thus, along with
increasing your own self–esteem, it is important that you help build up others' self–esteem as

Unemployment Poem Unemployment Summary
Every poem constructs a perception for every reader and most readers will have a different outcome
from one another. In the poem Unemployment, written by Fatimah Asghar, the author adds many
hidden messages and symbols in the poems for the readers to uncover, and in a lot of times it tends
to be difficult. Many poets will use their personal experiences to convey the message across to the
audience. It is still difficult for readers to understand the poem right away, as many poetry are
needed to be reread many times to understand the information that the poet is trying to get to the
reader. In the poem Asghar uses her own personal experience or a experience of another women and

Even though the hair on her leg is not shaved or smooth as the standard in society for women she
believe one should not care, but to accept it. More sheep than women is saying the hair on your
body does not define who you are as a women, it is not to say Asghar do not believe in not self
grooming but to embody what you are born with and not hate your own body for it is a gift. Fat and
stretch marks give character to the individual 's body and should not be looked down upon, but
instead other women should encourage one of another from negative comments lowering one's self
esteem. Asghar justifies that people should love the skin they are born with instead of changing
themselves to look better physically. What defines a person isn't what's on the outside but within.
Asghar wants women to love themselves for what they have and not the superficial aspects of life.
The definition of beauty is complex, everyone has their own definition of what beauty holds. There
are advertisements on how a woman should look and many follow onto those beliefs. Women are
too skinny, one part is too small, another part is too big, the perfect woman's beauty that our society
created is impossible and not achievable. Models that appear on

Social Self As Part Of Depression
Adding on to that, another study showed a culturally salient factor ,negative social self as
constituting part of depression. (Koh, Chang ,Fung and Kee 2007, p.225) This negative social self
was found to cause hopelessness, poor self esteem, and "control related beliefs." (Koh, Chang ,Fung
and Kee 2007, p.225) The study goes on to further state that "culturally embedded stressors"
(Yamamoto et al. 1997, cited in Koh, Chang ,Fung and Kee 2007, p.226) strongly influences the
"phenomenological experiences of emotions and their communications." (Koh, Chang ,Fung and
Kee 2007, p.226) It was found that Taiwan had lower levels of depression and other psychiatric
disorders as compared to the US. (Hwu et al 1989, cited in Caldwell–Harris & ... Show more

Moreover, a study by Kross and Grossmann (2010) highlights the impact of culture on adaptive
versus maladaptive self reflection by comparing Americans and Russians, whereby culture was
shown to affect the amount of self distancing of emotions, with the Russians being found to have
less detrimental forms of self reflection. This proves that culture can affect the amount and type of
self reflections that individuals carry out, as well as the extent of self distancing. As shown through
this study, self distancing could serve as a regulator for an individual 's emotions or the impact of
emotions on the cognitive aspect of the individual. Another study by Falicov (2003) proves that
there were more stigmatization of mental illnesses such as depression in collectivist societies as
compared to individualistic ones, whereby a Japanese woman confided in a close friend of hers only
for her friend to shun her. With such stigmatization, it is less likely that people will be open to
acknowledge their problems or seek help in collectivist societies, leading to the sustainment of
depression due to the extent of expressed emotions in such cultures.
On top of that, culture is also shown to affect thought processes. Members of collectivistic
tendencies tend to focus on negative consequences while members of individualistic tendencies tend
to focus more on positive consequences. (Lee et al. 2000, Briley & Wyer 2002, cited in Diener,
Oishi & Lucas 2003, p.412) This

Sns 's Effect On Adolescence Essay
Having developed only a few years ago, SNS have had the most effect on adolescence. Adolescence
are prone various peer, group and social pressures, SNS have changed the channels of
communicating these pressures influencing both self esteem and well–being. Valkenburg, Peter, and
Schouten (2006) looked at the effect SNS have on SE and well–being in adolescence, a correlation
co–efficient of r=0.34 suggested that there is a good positive relationship. Using a popular
Netherlands SNS "CU2", which contains 22% of Dutch adolescence aged 10–19, filled an online
survey, the study went on to find that SE is the cause, well being the effect and the relationship
mediated by SNS. The study suggested 3 reinforcement processes mediate this relationship, a. the
number of relationships formed, b. the frequency of feedback received via the profile, c. the tone of
this feedback. The self esteem measure used was the Harters self perception profile (Harter, 1982).
The study also used a well being 5 item satisfaction scale with high reliability (α=.89) (Diener,
Emmons, Larsen, & Griffin, 1985). Both scales were consistent. The results found that people
visited the site 3 days a week and stayed online for an hour, receiving an average if 25.31 reactions.
The tone varied, with predominantly positive (49.3%) and always positive (28.4%) the responses
highest. This study was the first of its kind to show the consequence of adolescent use of SNS on
their social self–esteem and well–being. 78% of

Rayona and her mother Christine grew up in different worlds but they are very similar in many
ways. Christine faced various problems as a young child that are now being passed down to Rayona
and she is now seeing how they are being affected by them. The novel "A Yellow Raft in Blue
Water" walks us through Rayona's coming of age story and the three perspectives that it is being
told in, Rayona's, Christine's, and Ida's. Although Rayona and Christine are very different, they both
seem to be facing similar problems; they end up helping one another find their self identity and both
are finally able to appreciate and understand one another. Rayona is in a way lost and can't seem to
find her place in the world. She thinks about herself in the way that she thinks others think of her.
She is fifteen years old at the time and does not have a lot of sense of her self. Rayona is half
African American and Native American, which makes her think she's different from others and
makes her have a low self esteem. She struggles with her identity and physical appearance. Another
thing that makes it difficult for her to find her true self is that she lacks information about her
heritage. Her dream is to have a "normal" life, meaning to have a functional happy family and to be
able to fit in. Rayona feels like a real family is the opposite of what she has. She goes through a
series of events and learns a little about her self in each of them. Rayona is

Persuasive Essay On Social Media
"The Internet is becoming the town square for the global village of tomorrow." by Bill Gates. It is
making the communities of the world more sociable towards each other. Social media is not making
us less communicative considering that it boasts individuals' self esteem, expands connectedness,
and has improved sociability. Not all may agree on it being that allegedly it is makes human beings
less social. On the contrary, It develops more friendships. First and foremost, the web can encourage
self love. On social platforms, such as instagram, there is an ability to posting pictures and on
having that ability people can share their "confidence boosters". Which are positive comments. In
The upside of selfies: Social media isn't all bad for kids, They have this mother of two named Eileen

the comments I usually see are 'you're beautiful,'You're so pretty,' 'Oh my God gorgeous'" said
Masio." it is evident that there is sort of positivity that can boost a person's self esteem with the
positive comments Masio's daughter receives. She is able to become more confident in herself. "One
in five teens say social media makes them feel more confident." according to the article The upsides
of selfies. It is perceptible that undoubtedly social media does boost confidence among teens. On the
other hand, the other half of society does not feel the same way. They feel as if social media was a
downer in general. Yet the web has its ways on being on the positive side of self esteem by
increasing it to those who have a low self esteem. Additionally, The social networking webs can
make humans expand connectedness. They have the availability of associating with individuals
around the planet Earth. According to The lonely Facebook Friends: Study shows social media

Emotional Intelligence And Outline The Principles Of Self...
Draft 2/07/2016 develop and use ei
Assessment 1
Question 1. Explain emotional intelligence and outline the principles of self–regulation and self–
awareness.
Emotional intelligence is the ability an individual has to one identify their own emotions as well as
others, two understand and manage these emotions successfully in self and others, with being able
to effectively manage yourself as well as your relationships.
Self–awareness can be considered essentially the bread and butter of all other competencies, it
means having the ability to recognise and understand your own emotions while being "aware' 'of
how these can affect work and life. It is highly accepted that people whom are self–aware of their
emotions are better able to guide their open lives , as opposed to those who do not this is just
another clear example of the importance of understanding and initiating emotional intelligence
through work or daily life.
As leaders whom practice self–awareness, are able to not only have confidence in their ability, to
lead when facing difficult decisions or moments of dire stress in the workplace. Accepting and
knowing these feelings can ultimately provide the user with useful information about difficult
decisions when answers are not available through external sources.
Leaders must rely on their own feelings to achieve results, being self–aware also provides the user
with the tools to assess their own strengths and limitations accurately, as they are completely honest

Evaluate One's Resume
When an individual prepares for a job application, one must plan to develop a successful resume.
Employers base their hiring process on both skills and attributes. To complete an effective resume,
one needs to be knowledgeable and credible when designing an outline to evaluate one's self. An
individual must self–examine one's interest, abilities, and attributes. These are key factors in
accomplishing a favorable outcome for one's resume. Career ambitions and competence help define
an individual's professional goals. When evaluating oneself for the planning process of resumes,
identifying the most important and strongest interest is necessary. This will help convey clear and

Analyzing Antonio's Looking Glass Self
Antonio wants to change the way he has been, and has seen how being a bully is not what he wants
in life. Antonio's "Looking glass self" has been impacted by his agents of socialization. Agents of
socialization are the individuals and institutions that help children acquire the attitudes, beliefs,
values, skills and behaviors that the larger society considers desirable (Bojczyk, Shriner, & Shriner,
2012).Examples of agents of socialization include parents, peers, teachers, siblings, community and
any extracurricular that the child is involved in. Antonio's "looking glass self" brings up and

After the students have thought about what bullying is have the whole class come together to make
two outline of a classmate. On one of the outlines the students will write rude, unkind, and
disrespectful statement's (Burns, n.d.). After the first outline is filled with the disrespectful
statements the teacher will take it and crumple it up. As the teacher is crumpling up the first outline
the students can be directed to write positive words on the other outline. Make sure that the outline
is full of positivizes. When the outlines are done un–crumple the first one and hang both of the
outlines up next to each other. The teacher can explain that the crumpled one is how hurtful words
can affect a person's self–image (Burns, n.d.). The other outline (the one that was not crumpled up)
can demonstrate how a person's self– image is not damaged and how a person's self–esteem can
actually be boosted with positive words.
Antonio's learned a lot from writing his essay "looking glass self". Antonio has been able to see
what it is that he was doing and how he did not want to continue doing that for the rest of his life, he
realized that he wanted to change his life now and with that he needed help. For Antonio to go to his
teacher and discuss ways that he can change he is showing that he is ready to be answerable to his
new way of life and that he will

The Romantic Movement: The Rise Of The American Renaissance
The Romantic Movement, or the American Renaissance, originated in Germany. This period spread
to England, France, and reached America in the early 1800's. Just as in Europe a new light was shed

expansion and the discovery of American voice. The foundation of national identity, the rising of

Self Identity By Anthony Giddens
"Project of the self" is one of the most significant concepts created by Anthony Giddens. The author
bases his ideas of self–identification upon influence of the modern world and changes created by the
process of globalization (Giddens, 1991). The main argument is strong. However the study seeks
some further explanations of the role of identity in the social life of individuals.
This essay will investigate issue of self–identity in the modern world according to Antony Giddens's
ideas. Firstly, it will be considered how the concept of self–identity is created in the modern world.
After that identities will be explained in terms of Giddens's opinion. It will be given an overview of
the main Giddens's work on self–identity (Giddens, 1991). Then Giddens's "Project of the self" will
be scrutinised. After that Giddens 's approach to self–identification will be critically analysed. There
will be outlined strength and weaknesses of the Giddens 's study on self–identity. The essay will be
finished by evaluation of Giddens's Project of the self".
The world has become modern and global. Identification of the self is a complicated, though, an
important problem of every individual. Self– identity is based on inner values and reflections on
culture, politics and social interactions. The main point is that people label themselves to any
particular group in the society (Worchel etc., 1998). According to Ferguson: "Identity commonly

Adam Smith Wealth Of Nations Essay
Adam Smith's The Wealth of Nations, brings on an interesting question as to whether commercial
society foster self–interest over selfishness or is it the opposite to the author? For Smith it would
have to be the former. This is due to how Smith views self–interest and selfishness. To him self–
interest is bred when his ideal of a commercial society is upheld. The way selfishness is seen in
society is when the problems that Smith outlines arise in the society. This leaves the question in
sticky situation because looking at any society one can usually find problems with it, but what is
important to remember is that we are not talking about the society we live in but the commercial
society that Smith discusses in his book. Taking this stance, we can safely assume that Smith would
answer the question above by saying that commercial society breeds self–interest over selfishness.
Smith goes over multiple structures that make up a commercial society but we will mainly be
focusing on the division of labour as well as supply and demand.
Moving forward, another important aspect of a commercial society which is the laws of supply and
demand. Supply is simply how much stock a person has, to sell. Demand is what people desire in
their lives. Both supply and demand can fluctuate going up or down but it is ideal for the two to

My Experience In Life
There are many moments in an individual's life where they succeed and learn dramatically from
their experience. It could be mentally, physically, or lead them to a higher self esteem and self
confidence. It could be the littlest success such as making a pancake, but it can have so much impact
on a persons self worth. Success can have many different definitions depending on who you ask
usually, but at the end of the day, it's usually improving either as an individual or at a certain task.
To begin with, I believe if you put your mind into something, you can do anything. Growing up, my
family has always had high expectations for me and I've always felt very determined despite the
pressure. Last year, I had to take the class precalculus which to some people it may come as a very
easy or hard thing to take. It was a very new type of class, and honestly I was taken out of my study
comfort zone because it did require a large amount of hours and work. I would sacrifice so much
time such as socializing with my friends and family, to be the best I could possibly be, and I learned
so many study habits I did not have before the class. I consider taking the class, success as a learner
because it was a very impacting and eye opening experience that will come very useful to me in the
future. Furthermore, being a Latina, I am trying my hardest to achieve the best grades possible to
beat statistics and graduate college. In fact, I am taking numerous

3. Self–defense starts with the mental discipline to fight. The human body produces a fight or flight
response in high stress situations.
4. Knowledge of techniques can protect the individual through an understanding of target areas and
personal weapons
II. Three individual body parts can be used as weapons for self–defense.
These body parts are the bony areas or personal weapons. The idea is to use a hard area to hit a soft
area. The resulting strike produces more damage, reduces the likelihood of injury to the defender,
and utilizes larger muscles eliminating the need for fine motor control. Fine motor control is
reduced in high stress situations.

Personal Essay : Self Espect And Self-Respect
According to Merriam–Webster, self–respect is a proper respect for oneself as a human being. I do
not call it self–respect when I constantly beat myself down with words. One must put themselves in
a position of self–respect with self–acceptance, self–worth and self–conceit. Prior to this time in my
life, I would continuously bully myself with malicious words. This hurtful content would come from
my own self or others. I had a visual idea of what I wanted myself to be. At the time, self–respect
did not look like beautiful flowers to me. On the inside, bruises covered my body, which looked
more like dead flowers living in me. Wicked words began eating up my body. Fast forward a few
years, I became well–educated on the term self–acceptance. ... Show more content on

Wanting to show kindness and love to others became my mission. Although, others do not
comprehend what kind means, I have learned to respect that and move on. Realizing that I know
longer need acquaintances, who do not act friendly, I came to the conclusion of what I deserve.
Surrounding myself with others who do not take me for granted, or who do not kill me with evil
words became a life choice I had to make for the better. Every individual needs to have the courage
to stand up for himself or herself and by knowing his or her own worth. Self–worth looks like a
pearl; a beautiful, smooth pearl that reveals itself, out of horror and pressure. I am self–worth.
Having self–respect for myself shows that I see myself as self–conceit. Self–conceit in my terms
means that I show pride in everything I have and will accomplish. Because my accomplishments
converge as an essential part of who I see myself as today, no one can take that away from me.
Respecting myself for most of my decisions made me not live with any regrets. In the century we
live in today, teenagers have peer–pressure all around them, especially on social media. Various

adolescents attempt to achieve daily. I believe that as a teenager, I have remained modest through

What are the challenges that face a psychotherapist working with self harm or eating disorders. "She

This perhaps would be something that could be worked on in therapy. It was also suggested that
some people self harm as a way of communicating or expressing things they cannot speak. It is
suggested when self abuse is used in this mannor it is considered manipulative an attempt at getting
a need met or to influence another. If this is the case it is important for the therapist to listen to what
that need is and to help the individual satisfy that need in a constructive and effective manner I
imagine the therapists first challenge when presented with an individual who self harms is creating a
space where the client can trust the therapist. I can imagine an individual who self harms will carry
a large level of guilt and shame at the behaviour and it is as always vital to move at a pace the client
is comfortable with. If I am aware of marks or cuts before the client has disclosed to me I will wait
until the client feels safe or I feel is ready to talk about the behaviour. Often the client will not have
appropriate support systems for whatever reason which puts them in a very vulnerable position. I
would never suggest a no self harm contract as I feel that would create too much pressure. It is
important to remember that the behaviour is the adapted coping strategy for this individual and on

Internet Esteem And Its Effects Of Internet Adolescents
Higher self esteem results in better academic performance, well being and coping strategies among
adolescents (Trzesniewski et al., 2003). On the other hand, low level of self esteem has negative
effects. These include isolation, loneliness, depression and substance abuse. Thus, it is very
important to have high level of self esteem among adolescents so that they can live a better life
ahead. There are many research studies done that emphasis on internet addiction and its effect on
adolescents. There results include effect on their academic performance, well being, self esteem and
increase family conflicts. According to one of the research done by Young (1998), it reported that
individuals who have high internet addiction among adolescents have low levels of self esteem. In
addition, low self esteem is also found to be one of the reasons for internet addiction in adolescents
and indulge themselves more into social networking sites, so that their sense of self worth increases
(Greenberg, Lewis & Dodd, 1999). Thus, self esteem is considered to be as an antecedent of internet
addiction as well as the consequence of it. FAMILY COMMUNICATION PATTERN AND

The Importance Of Self-Respect To Me
Self respect to me, means standing up for who you are and what you believe in, when the
circumstances you are in are bringing you down, while respecting others' backgrounds in the
process.
I feel like I have come a long way as a person, even though I am only 17 and still have a long way
to go in life and lots to learn. I feel like teenage years are meant for learning who you are as a
person, learning how to cope with other people, and what you want to accomplish in life. Forget
about high school classes like math, language arts or history. Yes those classes matter to pass or to
get a good grade in, but do they actually teach you how to be successful in life, or maybe teach you
lifelong skills you will need later in life? I bet you most students would tell you no to this question.
We find who we are when we get lost in the things we love doing and what we do with the
opportunities we have been given.
Your teenage years are all about you. You are learning on your own who you want to be and what
you want to be. A lot of studies out there say that teenagers or adolescents are actually more
hardworking than adults are. I believe this is true because most teenagers are involved in school,
work, sports, religious activities, and many more. I feel like I fit in this group. Ever since I was 15, I

Essay Questions on the Breakfast Club
Question #1, Option b Roles are like "parts" we play in life, each with a set of expectations specific
to that position (rules). In The Breakfast Club, Mr. Vernon has the role of the Principle. Naturally
this means his "rules" include both the explicit (written out and specifically defined) ones such as
managing the school's staff, and creating and carrying out policies and procedures, and the implicit
(implied) ones such as trying to guide his students down the right path and leading by example by
being respectful and fair to his students. In detention Mr. Vernon tells the students that they're not to

In the closet the wounded look on his face when Mr. Vernon told him he was basically scum further
strengthened my belief that deep down, he really believes all the things his parents and the principle
think about him. Since it is known that children who are told negative things about themselves at an
early age often come to believe it, and we know from John's outburst and the cigar burn on his arm
that this was likely the case for him, it's not difficult at all to believe that this was how his low self
esteem was developed in the first place. Odds are it was this constant belittling by them and any
negative reinforcement he got from other students and teachers like Mr. Vernon that helped to
solidify these beliefs about himself. John's public self, the one he projects for others to see, as seen
through his interactions and persona as a badass, is just that, "the criminal". His ideal self, the one
he really wishes he was, is probably that of the boy who can stand up to his father and scream "f*ck
you" back at his father when he's being degraded. All that pent up anger that he exhibited during his
skit of his home life probably wouldn't have been quite that forceful if it was really how he reacted
at a time like that. His real self, the guy he really is underneath all his masks, shells, and doubts, is
actually a pretty good guy whether he normally

Nikee. Apple. Covergirl. Weight Watchers. Why Do All These
Nikee. Apple. Covergirl. Weight Watchers. Why do all these seemingly unrelated names sound
familiar? That answer is simple: advertising. Advertising, a prodigious business, is a way to market
a product or service to the public consumer through TV, internet, billboards, and other outlets.
However, this over exposure to unnecessary and unwanted propaganda brings about personal
struggles, since ads scream about the absolute desire for self impeccability while simultaneously
destroying the spirits of those who listen. This industry's image of "normalcy" often alters one's self
image. Although many see the benefits of consumer marketing, the industry's depiction of idealized
perfection reveals that manipulating people through advertisements ... Show more content on

In addition, advertising feeds from mob mentality, convincing people a product will change their
lives by deeming it fashionable or sophisticated. It bypasses logical thinking to take control of how
people view themselves and their "need for esteem. People want and need to be respected and we
need to feel good about ourselves. And this is where much advertising lives, often because we are
selling products that people really do not need. L'Oreal's 'Because you're worth it' is the perfect
example" (Madigan 83). For this reason, expectations of a person are manipulated to fit the wants of
the industry to sell products. These people are affected since they feel as if they have no choice in
what to wear, how their body should appear to others, and which brands they buy. It all comes down
to the need to be apart of something bigger, instead of sticking out from the crowd.
EXAMPLE
Society's deeply ingrained standards for women created by the media demonstrate the corruption of
self image as seen through ads from the 1950s that feed off of insecurities. History demonstrates the
obsession with perfection by showing how women were viewed before and after advertising
influence, "Men wouldn 't look at me when I was skinny... Since I've gained 10 pounds, I have all
the dates I want" (Lewis). Ads such as this swayed women from the 1950s to 1960s to physically

The Importance Of Friendship In My Life
When I was younger, I used to think that all people were good and every friendship that lasted
longer than three months was forever. Now, I know that people will not always be what they seem, I
might get hurt from friendships, and I have to learn to let go sometimes. I believe in standing up for
yourself and your thoughts, even when it's the harder thing to do. I stand for not letting a toxic
relationship define you. This is how I believe in self worth. When I started my freshman year, I
walked in with some of the closest friends I'd ever had. The four of us, my best gal pal, Anna, her
boyfriend, Clay, and my best guy friend, Aaron. We did everything together, but it was Aaron and I
that grew to be best friends over that year. When it comes to friendships I think I can become
attached really easily. I am always the first person to say 'I love you'. It's just in my nature to be
attached to people because I don't want to change. We were constantly together, and they were the
closest friendships and relationships that I might ever have. Nothing could come between us, until
something did. By Christmas Eve I was seeing a boy, and on New Year's finally had my first kiss.
They were happy for me, but as the month of January rolled by I noticed a change in them. It was
hard for them to trust my new hockey playing boyfriend. Aaron was scared he would hit me or hurt
me because my boyfriend got very jealous, very easily, and it was mostly about my relationship with
Aaron.

Heraclitus once stated, "Change is the only constant in life." Since everything is eventually going to
change, it is incorrect to assume that societal values, such as the GenMe's value of self –esteem, will
be fixated in the society for the future generations. In Ethan Watters' "The Mega –Marketing of
Depression in Japan," Watters demonstrates the idea of how capitalism and advertisements make

In order to change for improvement, a person needs to cultivate self –awareness. It is important to
understand that when people introduce ideas to others, there is an underlying sense of selfishness
motivating this action. While GenMe can reverse its course, it would be better for GenMe to change
completely as that would allow for GenMe to not be selfish, like the Boomers. When the Boomers
proposed ideas to GenMe, GenMe accepted the ideas due to lack of self –control over his or her
brain. The way for GenMe to become better individuals lies in cultivating self –awareness, which
will allow GenMe to improve on its weaknesses, envision how certain decisions can affect one, and
become less self–interested. However, due to societal norms and the way in which the brain works,
one can tend to believe that self –awareness can decrease self –absorbance and hurt one's own image
of self –worth, which is not true. Hence, it can be tough for one to accept his or her weaknesses.
While the key for cultivating self –awareness depends on an individual's will, it also depends on the
society. It is evident that it is time for everyone to become positive, eventually leading to a better

Writings Involvement with Self and Society The self is expressed in a multitude of ways ranging
from speeches to television as well as writing. Not only that but as human beings it is instinctual to
make an observation and write it down, but we tend to add our own personal view as to what we
believe, or interpret something entirely else from the observation. By reading Karen Ho's
"Biographies of Hegemony" and Jean Twenge's "An Army of One: Me" essays as well as Robert

their views on what they wrote but what each of them shared in common was how their writing

that" (Ho 176). By Ho showing the mindset behind these people to the public she helped bring
society to the realization that the investment bankers although obtained knowledge at these elite
institutions they, investment bankers, are not very different from the rest of society. The students,
investment bankers as well as the rest of society are placed on a level playing field and in turn Ho

Essay On Social Media And Self Esteem
Whether you are thin or curvy, tall or short, young or old, everyone has been unhappy with how
they look at one point in their lives. This is especially seen in teens and young adults, who are
transitioning into a new phase of life. While we have much better therapy and the topic of self
confidence and self worth is talked about more openly than it ever has been before, we still struggle
with ourselves. Why? One reason could be our phones. The entire world is at our beck and call.
Every Instagram post or YouTube video we see, we compare ourselves whether we try to or not.
While social media itself does not cause low self esteem, it has every characteristic necessary in
order to do so. In an article by the Dove Self Esteem Project and Parent Zone corporation, the words
of Claire Mysko are quoted: "Social media creates an environment where disordered thoughts and
behaviors really thrive [...] and [social media, while giving young girls the validation they want]
also serves as a catalyst for more insecurity." The topic of self love is not talked about as much as it
should. While it is a more open topic than it has ever been before, social media really is not helping
improve the way we view ourselves, because there is always a more muscular, thin, tan, beautiful
person on the internet. As social media and technology become a larger and larger part of everyday
life, so does the way we think about ourselves. An article written by Caroline Knorr, a writer for
CNN, states that "35

confused with what they are reading. For example the usage of the word "existential crisis" (Amee
LaTour 2014) (p.14) (line 108). This problem also continued when she used the word "inadequate"
(Amee LaTour 2014) (p.12) (line 95).
Another shortcoming in this article is that it is hard to know where to go with LaTour's arguments.
In expressing her concerns about the causes of low self–esteem, LaTour thinks that the "choices a
person make can improve their self–esteem"(p.18) (line142) . This is an unrealistic argument. The
choices that a person might not be the only affect of this issue as their surrounding and environment
can also be a factor of having low self–esteem. CONCLUSION
This critical review has reviewed an article "8 common causes of low self esteem by Amee Latour".
This article is very interesting and factful. It offers the dark side of having low self–esteem issues.
She does a good job in making her article reader friendly. However her writing is weakened by the
presence of bombastic words and unrealistic

Speech On Self Discipline
Have you ever wondered how other people seem to achieve more but yet you work just as hard?
Have you ever wondered how others seem to be more successful and you know that you are just as
intelligent, just as capable but yet for some reason you aren't doing as well?
There could be one key ingredient that you are missing to achieving your goals. It is an ingredient
that is often taken for granted and overlooked because it is so simple and that is "self discipline".
What is self discipline?
It is the ability to do what you should do when you should do it whether you feel like it or not.
This is a quality you need to posses while on your journey to reaching your destination. Without it,
you will struggle in reaching your goal.
What has been holding you back?
Before you can begin thinking about how to improve your self discipline, you need ask yourself
what has been holding you back. This will give you a better idea of your thought processes, your
beliefs, your behaviours and what action you can take to empower yourself to make positive
changes.
So here are some questions I would like you to consider:
1. Why aren't you as successful as you would like to be?
2. What beliefs do you think have been disempowering you? and
3. What behaviours do you think you could improve on?
Here are some other questions to consider?
Do you make excuses or procrastinate?
Are unclear and aren't sure of what you really want?
Do you think you deserve those rewards or are you unconsciously sabotaging your potential to
achieve your goals?
Is there some part of you that believes you aren't capable?
Or maybe all of the above are just excuses. Here is a secret to making that big change in your life...
stop making excuses.
You can either have REASONS or you can have RESULTS! Which one do you chose?
Are you clear on what you want?
Before we start planning on what actions we can take to move in the right direction, we need to be
clear on what that direction is, therefore it is imperative that you understand what success means to
you. Everyone has their own definition of success and it doesn't make you right or wrong. It is what
works for you and is based on your values. Is it about living up to your own expectations not
someone else's?

Summary Of Self Respect By Didion

  • 1. Summary Of Self Respect By Didion Weekly Critique 2 Summary of the reading Self–Respect by Didion is an essay that compares a lot of things about self–respect to our lives. In the beginning of the Self–Respect essay, the author talks about the situation she experienced when she was nineteen years old which had to do with the failure to be pledged to a college honor society. She did not have the grades to qualify her to be pledged into the honor society, which made her come to a realization that we are not handed out things in life rather, we have to earn them "no winning smiles will do over here, no pretty drawn lines of good intentions" (Didion 2). She also realized that we are not judged in this life based on who we are but on what we have done to earn them and that made her feel a loss of innocence "the day I did not make Phi Beth Kappa nonetheless marked the end of something and innocence may well be the word for it" (Didion 2) hence making her understand that all situations have a consequence. This essay compares people with no self–respect to children sleeping in the bed they made for themselves showing us that children who did not make well supported beds did not sleep well at night. This shows us that people without self–respect lacked the very foundation to teach them about it "the measure of slipping prestige is that one tends to think only of homely children" (Didion 4). She also lets us understand that the things we do to earn respect as children is not the same we do as adults. The things she ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 2. Self Respect Is A Very Powerful Term Neel Bhagat ENG 111 September 09, 2015 Self–respect is a very powerful term. Self–respect is something that has to be earned; it has to be earned from you for yourself. Self–respect has to be learned by oneself, nobody is born with self–respect for himself or herself; it's not an instinct. Many people take pride in their sense of self–respect. Self–respect is a vital part of ones existence. Self– respect is developed throughout a persons lifetime through many different experiences and encounters with other people, oneself and society. According to Merriam–Webster collegiate dictionary the meaning of self–respect is 1: "a proper respect of oneself as a human being" 2: "regard for one's own standing or position". Self–respect can come in many shapes and forms. There is no mandated definition for this word. It is all what meaning you make of it. Self–respect is essential when it comes to making decisions for one self. The level of self–respect you have for yourself determines how good you are at making judgments for yourself and others. Lets say you are going out to dinner with your friends and your friend is a really cheap as a person, and will make the excuse of saying that he forgot his wallet at home and will ask you to cover for him this time and that he will pay you back whenever he sees you next. Next time you see him you guys go out to a movie and you want him to pay you back, but you have a certain sense of self respect and you don't want to be the one to remind him ... • 3. Presentation of self outline Essay Critical appreciation: Erving Goffman; The presentation of self in everyday life. Erving Goffman was one of the most important Sociologists in the 20th century who focussed his study on aspects of social life. It is often argued that Goffman was "one of the twentieth century's most remarkable practitioners of social science" (Smith, 2006:1). He was born on the 11th June 1922 in Alberta, Canada. His parents were Jewish and part of the group of Ukrainians who moved to Canada before the beginning of the First World War. Initially Goffman studied Chemistry before moving to the University of Toronto to study Anthropology and Sociology where he gained an understanding in Durkheim, Warner, Freud and Parsons. Goffman's wife killed herself ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... He also implies how an individual will be focussed on making a favourable show of him (a good impression) which gives another explanation to why humans can be seen as actors in situations of social interaction, they act how they think the audience (observers) want them to act. To summarise his chapter on presentation Goffman's primary assumption is that individuals differ not by their specific qualities, but by the situations they find themselves in to which they adopt different 'roles' to perform for the "observer". For this work Goffman gained inspiration from his own personal experiences, as his wife struggled with mental illness and he chose to travel to the Shetland Islands to study the interaction in their society. His wife's illness may have shaped his argument as another key piece of his work was Asylums where he carried out fieldwork in a hospital where he wished to look at the social world of an inmate. In his findings he was very critical and stated how behaviour that was deemed out of the ordinary was simply someone not conforming to the rules and expectations of society. If those rules or norms/values are broken that person would be viewed as an outsider and therefore displays an inability to play the role of an "actor". A key theorist behind his work is Herbert Mead who published a book Mind, Self and Society and he looked at the experiences of human beings and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Teen Choir: Music Analysis As a member of the Catholic Church, one of my favorite features of the Mass has always been the music. My love for singing was cultivated here, first through joining the Children's Choir in grade school and then in the Teen Choir throughout junior high and high school. As I got older, I would even lead the music by myself on occasion. Having been away at college these last few years, I have not been able to sing as much as I would have liked, other than during breaks and for holidays such as Christmas or Easter. However, this semester I have taken on a leadership role in the Teen Choir to assist the head sponsor, Amy, while she is battling cancer for the second time. After organizing the music, setting up equipment, and working with the other choir members, I found that Amy, these teens, and the congregation at Church, were not the only people who benefited from my involvement in the music ministry; my self–esteem has been positively affected as well. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This measure comes in two degrees: high and low. For example, people with high self–esteem tend to feel good about themselves, while those with low self–esteem think poorly of themselves. Although many people, myself included, frequently associate self–esteem with body image, it involves much more than how you feel about your physical appearance; how you feel about your capabilities and achievements affect your self–esteem too. It is suggested that self–esteem can be increased by "attacking self–destructive beliefs, seeking out nourishing people, working on projects that will result in success, and securing affirmation" (DeVito 60–61). Additionally, self–esteem can influence how you communicate with others and how they communicate with you. In the poem Unemployment, written by Fatimah Asghar, the author adds many hidden messages and symbols in the poems for the readers to uncover, and in a lot of times it tends to be difficult. Many poets will use their personal experiences to convey the message across to the audience. It is still difficult for readers to understand the poem right away, as many poetry are needed to be reread many times to understand the information that the poet is trying to get to the reader. More sheep than women is saying the hair on your body does not define who you are as a women, it is not to say Asghar do not believe in not self grooming but to embody what you are born with and not hate your own body for it is a gift. Fat and stretch marks give character to the individual 's body and should not be looked down upon, but instead other women should encourage one of another from negative comments lowering one's self esteem. Asghar justifies that people should love the skin they are born with instead of changing themselves to look better physically. What defines a person isn't what's on the outside but within. Asghar wants women to love themselves for what they have and not the superficial aspects of life. The definition of beauty is complex, everyone has their own definition of what beauty holds. There are advertisements on how a woman should look and many follow onto those beliefs. Women are too skinny, one part is too small, another part is too big, the perfect woman's beauty that our society created is impossible and not achievable. Models that appear on ... • 8. Social Self As Part Of Depression Adding on to that, another study showed a culturally salient factor ,negative social self as constituting part of depression. (Koh, Chang ,Fung and Kee 2007, p.225) This negative social self was found to cause hopelessness, poor self esteem, and "control related beliefs." (Koh, Chang ,Fung and Kee 2007, p.225) The study goes on to further state that "culturally embedded stressors" (Yamamoto et al. 1997, cited in Koh, Chang ,Fung and Kee 2007, p.226) strongly influences the "phenomenological experiences of emotions and their communications." (Koh, Chang ,Fung and Kee 2007, p.226) It was found that Taiwan had lower levels of depression and other psychiatric disorders as compared to the US. (Hwu et al 1989, cited in Caldwell–Harris & ... Moreover, a study by Kross and Grossmann (2010) highlights the impact of culture on adaptive versus maladaptive self reflection by comparing Americans and Russians, whereby culture was shown to affect the amount of self distancing of emotions, with the Russians being found to have less detrimental forms of self reflection. This proves that culture can affect the amount and type of self reflections that individuals carry out, as well as the extent of self distancing. As shown through this study, self distancing could serve as a regulator for an individual 's emotions or the impact of emotions on the cognitive aspect of the individual. Another study by Falicov (2003) proves that there were more stigmatization of mental illnesses such as depression in collectivist societies as compared to individualistic ones, whereby a Japanese woman confided in a close friend of hers only for her friend to shun her. With such stigmatization, it is less likely that people will be open to acknowledge their problems or seek help in collectivist societies, leading to the sustainment of depression due to the extent of expressed emotions in such cultures. On top of that, culture is also shown to affect thought processes. Members of collectivistic tendencies tend to focus on negative consequences while members of individualistic tendencies tend to focus more on positive consequences. (Lee et al. 2000, Briley & Wyer 2002, cited in Diener, Oishi & Lucas 2003, p.412) This ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 20. Adam Smith Wealth Of Nations Essay Adam Smith's The Wealth of Nations, brings on an interesting question as to whether commercial society foster self–interest over selfishness or is it the opposite to the author? For Smith it would have to be the former. This is due to how Smith views self–interest and selfishness. To him self– interest is bred when his ideal of a commercial society is upheld. The way selfishness is seen in society is when the problems that Smith outlines arise in the society. This leaves the question in sticky situation because looking at any society one can usually find problems with it, but what is important to remember is that we are not talking about the society we live in but the commercial society that Smith discusses in his book. Taking this stance, we can safely assume that Smith would answer the question above by saying that commercial society breeds self–interest over selfishness. Smith goes over multiple structures that make up a commercial society but we will mainly be focusing on the division of labour as well as supply and demand. Moving forward, another important aspect of a commercial society which is the laws of supply and demand. Supply is simply how much stock a person has, to sell. Demand is what people desire in their lives. Both supply and demand can fluctuate going up or down but it is ideal for the two to have an equilibrium. The Importance Of Self-Respect To Me Self respect to me, means standing up for who you are and what you believe in, when the circumstances you are in are bringing you down, while respecting others' backgrounds in the process. I feel like I have come a long way as a person, even though I am only 17 and still have a long way to go in life and lots to learn. I feel like teenage years are meant for learning who you are as a person, learning how to cope with other people, and what you want to accomplish in life. Forget about high school classes like math, language arts or history. Yes those classes matter to pass or to get a good grade in, but do they actually teach you how to be successful in life, or maybe teach you lifelong skills you will need later in life? I bet you most students would tell you no to this question. We find who we are when we get lost in the things we love doing and what we do with the opportunities we have been given. Your teenage years are all about you. You are learning on your own who you want to be and what you want to be. A lot of studies out there say that teenagers or adolescents are actually more hardworking than adults are. I believe this is true because most teenagers are involved in school, work, sports, religious activities, and many more. I feel like I fit in this group. Ever since I was 15, I feel like life has just been busy all the time (which is a good thing). This is because I am actually taking advantage of all the opportunities I have been given as a teenager. In The Breakfast Club, Mr. Vernon has the role of the Principle. Naturally this means his "rules" include both the explicit (written out and specifically defined) ones such as managing the school's staff, and creating and carrying out policies and procedures, and the implicit (implied) ones such as trying to guide his students down the right path and leading by example by being respectful and fair to his students. In detention Mr. Vernon tells the students that they're not to talk, move from their seats, or sleep, and that they're expected to write an essay of no less than a thousand words on "who they think ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In the closet the wounded look on his face when Mr. Vernon told him he was basically scum further strengthened my belief that deep down, he really believes all the things his parents and the principle think about him. Since it is known that children who are told negative things about themselves at an early age often come to believe it, and we know from John's outburst and the cigar burn on his arm that this was likely the case for him, it's not difficult at all to believe that this was how his low self esteem was developed in the first place. Odds are it was this constant belittling by them and any negative reinforcement he got from other students and teachers like Mr. Vernon that helped to solidify these beliefs about himself. John's public self, the one he projects for others to see, as seen through his interactions and persona as a badass, is just that, "the criminal". His ideal self, the one he really wishes he was, is probably that of the boy who can stand up to his father and scream "f*ck you" back at his father when he's being degraded. All that pent up anger that he exhibited during his skit of his home life probably wouldn't have been quite that forceful if it was really how he reacted at a time like that. His real self, the guy he really is underneath all his masks, shells, and doubts, is actually a pretty good guy whether he normally ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 33. Nikee. Apple. Covergirl. Weight Watchers. Why Do All These Nikee. Apple. Covergirl. Weight Watchers. Why do all these seemingly unrelated names sound familiar? That answer is simple: advertising. Advertising, a prodigious business, is a way to market a product or service to the public consumer through TV, internet, billboards, and other outlets. However, this over exposure to unnecessary and unwanted propaganda brings about personal struggles, since ads scream about the absolute desire for self impeccability while simultaneously destroying the spirits of those who listen. This industry's image of "normalcy" often alters one's self image. Although many see the benefits of consumer marketing, the industry's depiction of idealized perfection reveals that manipulating people through advertisements ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In addition, advertising feeds from mob mentality, convincing people a product will change their lives by deeming it fashionable or sophisticated. It bypasses logical thinking to take control of how people view themselves and their "need for esteem. People want and need to be respected and we need to feel good about ourselves. And this is where much advertising lives, often because we are selling products that people really do not need. L'Oreal's 'Because you're worth it' is the perfect example" (Madigan 83). For this reason, expectations of a person are manipulated to fit the wants of the industry to sell products. These people are affected since they feel as if they have no choice in what to wear, how their body should appear to others, and which brands they buy. It all comes down to the need to be apart of something bigger, instead of sticking out from the crowd. EXAMPLE Society's deeply ingrained standards for women created by the media demonstrate the corruption of self image as seen through ads from the 1950s that feed off of insecurities. History demonstrates the obsession with perfection by showing how women were viewed before and after advertising influence, "Men wouldn 't look at me when I was skinny... Now, I know that people will not always be what they seem, I might get hurt from friendships, and I have to learn to let go sometimes. I believe in standing up for yourself and your thoughts, even when it's the harder thing to do. I stand for not letting a toxic relationship define you. This is how I believe in self worth. When I started my freshman year, I walked in with some of the closest friends I'd ever had. The four of us, my best gal pal, Anna, her boyfriend, Clay, and my best guy friend, Aaron. We did everything together, but it was Aaron and I that grew to be best friends over that year. When it comes to friendships I think I can become attached really easily. I am always the first person to say 'I love you'. It's just in my nature to be attached to people because I don't want to change. We were constantly together, and they were the closest friendships and relationships that I might ever have. Nothing could come between us, until something did. By Christmas Eve I was seeing a boy, and on New Year's finally had my first kiss. They were happy for me, but as the month of January rolled by I noticed a change in them. It was hard for them to trust my new hockey playing boyfriend. Since everything is eventually going to change, it is incorrect to assume that societal values, such as the GenMe's value of self –esteem, will be fixated in the society for the future generations. In Ethan Watters' "The Mega –Marketing of Depression in Japan," Watters demonstrates the idea of how capitalism and advertisements make one selfish and exploit the idea of happiness. Jean Twenge's "An Army of One: Me," shows how even parents can have an underlying level of selfishness and in order for children to stop naively accepting their parent's ideas lies in the children being able to accept criticism. In order to change for improvement, a person needs to cultivate self –awareness. It is important to understand that when people introduce ideas to others, there is an underlying sense of selfishness motivating this action. While GenMe can reverse its course, it would be better for GenMe to change completely as that would allow for GenMe to not be selfish, like the Boomers. When the Boomers proposed ideas to GenMe, GenMe accepted the ideas due to lack of self –control over his or her brain. The way for GenMe to become better individuals lies in cultivating self –awareness, which will allow GenMe to improve on its weaknesses, envision how certain decisions can affect one, and become less self–interested. However, due to societal norms and the way in which the brain works, one can tend to believe that self –awareness can decrease self –absorbance and hurt one's own image of self –worth, which is not true. Hence, it can be tough for one to accept his or her weaknesses. While the key for cultivating self –awareness depends on an individual's will, it also depends on the society. By reading Karen Ho's "Biographies of Hegemony" and Jean Twenge's "An Army of One: Me" essays as well as Robert Thurman's "Wisdom" it is evident that each employed a distinctive argument and method to explain their views on what they wrote but what each of them shared in common was how their writing allowed their ... • 39. Essay On Social Media And Self Esteem Whether you are thin or curvy, tall or short, young or old, everyone has been unhappy with how they look at one point in their lives. This is especially seen in teens and young adults, who are transitioning into a new phase of life. While we have much better therapy and the topic of self confidence and self worth is talked about more openly than it ever has been before, we still struggle with ourselves. Why? One reason could be our phones. The entire world is at our beck and call. Every Instagram post or YouTube video we see, we compare ourselves whether we try to or not. While social media itself does not cause low self esteem, it has every characteristic necessary in order to do so. In an article by the Dove Self Esteem Project and Parent Zone corporation, the words of Claire Mysko are quoted: "Social media creates an environment where disordered thoughts and behaviors really thrive [...] and [social media, while giving young girls the validation they want] also serves as a catalyst for more insecurity." The topic of self love is not talked about as much as it should. While it is a more open topic than it has ever been before, social media really is not helping improve the way we view ourselves, because there is always a more muscular, thin, tan, beautiful person on the internet. As social media and technology become a larger and larger part of everyday life, so does the way we think about ourselves. An article written by Caroline Knorr, a writer for CNN, states that "35 ...
