Oogenesis is the process by which ovaries produce ovum. It begins before birth as primordial germ cells migrate to the ovaries and develop into primary oocytes through mitosis and meiosis. At birth, oocytes arrest in prophase I. Upon puberty, selected follicles mature through primary, secondary, and preovulatory stages, with the oocyte completing the first meiotic division just before ovulation releases a secondary oocyte. If fertilized, meiosis II is completed, but the oocyte degenerates within a day if not fertilized.
