In the rapidly changing world of research and scholarly communications, researchers are faced with a fast growing range of options to publicly disseminate, review, and discuss research—options which will affect their long-term reputation. Early career scholars must be especially thoughtful in choosing how much effort to invest in dissemination and communication, and what strategies to use.
Dr. Micah Altman briefly reviews a number of bibliometric and scientometric studies of quantitative research impact, a sampling of influential qualitative writings advising this area, and an environmental scan of emerging researcher profile systems. Based on this review, and on professional experience on dozens of review panels, Dr. Altman suggests some steps early career researchers may consider when disseminating their research and participating in public reviews and discussion.

The event included dissemination of the outputs of two recent HEA-funded projects on teaching research methods in the social sciences. Delegates were also introduced to some new and existing quantitative datasets and resources and explore the potential for integrating these across the undergraduate curriculum.

State-of-the-art Artifical Intelligence (AI) and data management techniques have been demonstrated to process large volumes of noisy data to extract meaningful patterns and drive decisions in diverse applications ranging from space exploration (NASA's Curiosity), game shows (IBM's Watson in Jeopardy™ ) and even consumer products (Apple's SIRI™ voice-recognition). However, what stops them from helping us in more mundane things like fighting diseases, eliminating hunger, improving commuting
to work, or reducing financial frauds and corruption? Consumable data!
In this talk, Biplav will demonstrate and discuss how large volumes of data (Big), made available publicly (Open), can be productively used with semantic web and analytical techniques to drive day-to-day applications. One important source of this type of data is government open data which is from governments and free to be reused. Big Open Data is leading to early examples of "open innovations" - a confluence of open data (e.g., Data.gov, data.gov.in), accessible via API techniques (e.g., Open 311),
annotated with semantic information (e.g., W3C ontologies, Schema.org) and processed with analytical techniques (e.g., R, Weka) to drive actionable insights. The talk will illustrate how this can help bring increased benefits to citizens and discuss research issues that can accelerate its pace. It is increasingly being adopted by progressive businesses and governments to drive innovation that matters.

About Simon Knight
Simon Knight is a lecturer at the University of Technology Sydney in the Faculty of Transdisciplinary Innovation. His research investigates how people find and evaluate evidence, particularly in the context of learning and educator practices. Dr Knight received his Bachelor’s degree in Philosophy and Psychology from the University of Leeds before completing a teacher education program and Philosophy of Education MA at the UCL Institute of Education. Following teaching high school social sciences, Dr Knight completed an MPhil in Educational Research Methods at Cambridge, and PhD in Learning Analytics at the UK Open University.
About Simon’s Talk
How do we make use of data about our students to support their learning, and where does learning analytics fit into that? Educators are increasingly asked to work with data and technologies such as learning analytics to support and provide evidence of student learning. However, what learning analytics developers should design for, and how educators will implement analytics, is unclear. Learning analytics risks the same levels of low uptake and implementation as many other educational technologies if they do not align with educator practice and needs. How then do we tackle this gap, to support and develop technologies that are implemented in practice, for impact on learning?
At the University of Technology Sydney, we have taken a participatory design based approach to designing and implementing learning analytics in practice, and understanding their impact. In our work we have identified existing practices with which learning analytics may be aligned to augment them. This talk introduces some of these projects, particularly drawing on our work in developing analytics to support student writing (writing analytics), giving examples of how analytics were aligned with existing pedagogic practices to support learning. Through this augmentation, supported by design-based approaches, we argue we can develop research and practice in tandem.

Foresight by Online Communities - The Case of Renewable EnergiesMichael Andreas Zeng
Web 2.0 offers manifold ways in order to integrate community members via online communities (OCs) for innovation processes. OCs prove to be a valuable and dynamic source of information. External information sources are also important for foresight in order to be able to identify and monitor all relevant changes. However, traditional foresight methods are rather static in comparison with dynamic OCs. Thus, this study gives first insights into the use of OCs for foresight. First, based on literature, it is conceptually shown that OCs can contribute to foresight. Second, the question of how to assess the potential of OCs for foresight is considered. Renewable energies OCs are identified using a netnographic approach. One selected OC is analyzed in-depth by applying a prior developed criteria catalog which is based on Popper's (2008) foresight diamond. Each of its four dimensions – creativity, expertise, interaction, and evidence – is operationalized with measurement items taken from literature. In particular, the evidence dimension is supported by a text mining approach. Lastly, a focus group interview proves the usefulness of OCs for foresight. The findings show that OCs can contribute to each dimension of the foresight diamond and serve as an additional source of information for foresight.

The open academic: Why and how business academics should use social media to ...Ian McCarthy
Abstract: The mission of many business schools and their researchers is to produce research that that impacts how business leaders, entrepreneurs, managers, and innovators, think and act. However, this mission remains an elusive ideal for many business school academics because they struggle to design and produce research capable of overcoming the "research-practice gap." To help those scholars address this gap, we explain why and how they should use social media to be more 'open' to connecting with, learning from, and working with academics and other stakeholders outside of their field. We describe how social media can be used as a boundary-spanning technology to help bridge the research-practice gap. To do this, we present a process model of five research activities: networking, framing, investigating, dissemination, and assessment. Using recently published research as an illustrative example, we describe how social media was used to make each activity more open. We conclude with a framework of different social media-enabled open academic approaches (connector, observer, promoter, and influencer) and some dos and don'ts for engaging in each approach. This paper aims to help business academics rethink and change their practices so that our profession is more widely regarded for how its research positively impacts practice and societal well-being more generally.

This paper presents findings of a fieldwork study that explored research practices, challenges, and directions in contemporary digital humanities scholarship. The study was conducted in the period April-October, 2010, as part of two research projects of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences and the Oxford Internet Institute. The studies included observations, focus groups, and in-depth interviews with digital humanities scholars, policymakers, and funders, with a focus on developers and users of digital resources for humanities research. The study involved 92 participants from over 25 institutions in 5 countries.

has been a key pursuit of AI research and development. Their most recent form, chatbots, which can engage people in natural conversation and are easy to build in software, have been in the news a lot lately. There are many platforms to create dialogs quickly for any domain, based on simple rules. Further, there is a mad rush by companies to release chatbots to show their AI capabilities and gain market valuation. However, beyond basic demonstration, there is little experience in how they can be designed and used for
real-world applications that need decision making under constraints (e.g., sequential
decision making), work with groups of people and deal with dynamic
data. Further, users expect systems to adapt their functionality to their users’ individual needs, convincingly explain their suggestions and decision-making
behavior, and maintain highest ethical standards. This talk will summarize the area of
task-oriented conversation agents and highlight key considerations

Simulation is known to be an effective technique to understand
and manage traffic in cities of developed countries. However, in developing countries, traffic management is lacking due to a wide diversity of vehicles on the road, their chaotic movement, little instrumentation to sense traffic state and limited funds to create IT and physical infrastructure to ameliorate the situation. Under these conditions, in this paper, we present our approach of using the Megaffic traffic simulator as a service to gain actionable insights for two use-cases and cities in India, a first. Our approach is general to be readily used in other use cases and cities; and our results give new insights: (a) using demographics data, traffic demand can be reduced if timings of government offices are altered in Delhi, (b) using a mobile company’s Call
Data Record (CDR) data to mine trajectories anonymously,
one can take effective traffic actions while organizing events
in Mumbai at local scale.

Through a comparative analysis approach and eight weeks of data collection, the study addressed key research questions related to solar radiation patterns and optimal system design. The findings highlighted regions with heightened solar radiation levels, showcasing substantial potential for power generation and emphasizing the system's efficiency. Optimizing system design significantly boosted power generation, promoted renewable energy utilization, and enhanced energy storage capacity. The study underscored the benefits of optimizing hybrid solar PV panels and pumped hydro energy supply systems for sustainable energy usage.
