2. Style: is the manner in which a work is written. (Voice
being a synonym)
Persona: The distinction between author and
character voice.
Tone: the emotional quality of the work it’s self, as well
as the authors.

1. Diction: Choice of words
2. Syntax: sentence structure
3. Density: the presence or absence of figurative and
symbolic language
4. Narrative modes: relative emphasis on dialogue, thoughts,
action, and exposition.
5. Tense: past or present
6. Person: first, third, and very occasionally “you” and “they”

Tone deals with the
emotional aspect of the
work and comes with
many varieties.
5. Types of Irony
Verbal irony: when characters or authors say
something that is intentionally different than what they
really mean. AKA Sarcasm.
Dramatic irony: similar but character making the
statement does not know the true significance of what
he or she is saying.
Cosmic irony: AKA irony of fate, reversal in events
rather than words.
Satire: exaggeration for the purpose of ridicule.
