SUBPLOTS

Long stories usually have subplots- minor
plots that are part of the larger story.
PARALLEL EPISODES

When elementsof the plot are repeated, we
refer to those events as parallel espisodes,
parallel episodes are very common in fairy
tales. Each of the wishes in “Those three
wishes” is a parallel episode.
SETTING AS BACKGROUND

The time and place in which a story takes
place is called its setting. Depending on the
story and the writer, setting can be a
background story element or a key part of the
story.
SETTING AS CONFLICT

Sometimes the setting is central to a story’s
main conflict. Fierce winter, broiling sun, or a
raging hurricane, for example, may be the
main problem that faces a story’s character.
MOOD

The overall atmosphere or emotional effect of
a work of literature is referred to as the
work’s mood. Mood is created by the writer’s
word choice and is described with adjectives,
such as scary, uplifting, tense, and nostalgic. A
story’s setting often plays a role in creating
mood.
