- 2. Every sentenceincludes at least one subject and one verb. They can be either singular or plural, but they must be the same. If one is singular and the other is plural, the reader will end up confused. In other words, the subject and verb have to agree. Number is the term used to describe the form of a word that indicates whether the word is singular or plural. When a word refers to one person, place, thing, or idea, it is singular in number. When a word refers to more than one, it is plural in number. Two words agree when they have the same number. The number of a verb must always agree with the number of its subject.
