Stylistic devices
In literature and writing, Stylistic Elements are the
use of any of a variety of techniques to give an
auxiliary meaning, idea, or feeling to the literal or
written.
A figure of speech is any way of saying something
other than the ordinary way. Figurative language is
language using figures of speech.
Personification
& Apostrophe
What is Personification?
Personification is one of the most frequently used
figures of speech. Personification definition is often
described as the act of speech or writing by which
inanimate objects, concepts of actions that are
similar to those of human.
Examples:
Two Sunflowers Move in the Yellow Room.
"Ah, William, we're weary of weather,"
said the sunflowers, shining with dew.
"Our traveling habits have tired us.
Can you give us a room with a view?"
William Blake
(1757-1827)
Some examples will help us understand personification
definition more easily.
The train whistle blew in the night.
The lonely train whistle cried out in the night.
The wind blew the leaves.
The restless wind juggled the leaves.
The clouds went across the sky.
The angry clouds marched across the sky.
Personification is created by adding a “feeling” words. It can
be used as a method of describing something so that others
can understand. It can be used to emphasize a point. It is a
commonly favored literary tool, and you may in fact use
personification without even knowing it.
The sun peeked happily from behind a cloud.
The trees danced back and forth in the wind.
It was time to go home, but the bell refused to ring.
The gentle wind softly kissed my cheeks as I walked.
I can see that news travels quickly.
My computer hates me.
What is apostrophe?
Similar to 'personification' but indirect. The speaker
addresses someone absent or dead, or addresses an
inanimate or abstract object as if it were human.
Examples:
Hello darkness, my old friend, I`ve come to talk with
you again.
"Blue Moon, you saw me standing alone
Without a dream in my heart
Without a love of my own.
