Life in the Netherlands
Situated in Northwestern Europe and often referred to as Holland, the Netherlands
comprises twelve provinces and shares borders with Belgium to the south and Germany
to the east, with the remaining sides embraced by a coastline. Dutch is the official
language of the country.
The Netherlands boasts an excellent transportation system, including the Eurostar, an
international high-speed rail service connecting the UK with France, Belgium, and the
Netherlands. Moreover, the country serves as a gateway to Europe, with Paris just a
three-hour train ride away, and London and Berlin accessible in five or six hours.
In the 2018 Global Peace Index, the Netherlands was recognized as one of the safest
countries globally. The Dutch culture is captivating, offering a blend of vibrant activities.
During leisure time, students can explore nearby coffee shops, partake in summer
festivals, and attend events hosted in the country's museums. Additionally, with 95% of
the Dutch population fluent in English, life in the Netherlands becomes notably more
accessible and less complex.
Study in the Netherlands
Dutch higher education is widely acknowledged for its quality. Compared to countries
like the US, UK, and Canada, the tuition fees and cost of living are significantly lower.
The Dutch teaching approach is interactive and student-centered, fostering the
acquisition of valuable skills such as problem-solving, creative thinking, and analysis.
Netherlands universities provide an extensive array of English-taught programs in
Europe, totaling around 2,000 programs taught entirely in English. Students accrue
credits during their academic pursuits, and upon completing their studies, these credits,
known as ECTS credits, are awarded. Additionally, numerous scholarship opportunities
are available.
With representation from over 160 countries, the Netherlands attracts a diverse
international student community. The country is deeply connected with various cultures,
business communities, and the global arena. Some of the top-ranking universities in the
Netherlands include Leiden University, Erasmus University Rotterdam, Delft University of
Technology, Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, University of Groningen, Maastricht
University, Radboud University Nijmegen, Wageningen University and Research Center,
among others.
