European Higher Education System
How Does The European Higher Education System
Work?
To enhance the quality and recognition of European higher education systems, 33 countries of Europe
collaborated to be a part of the European Higher Education Area [EHEA]. 29 countries out of these 33 European
countries consented to follow the Bologna process – the higher education that follows the three-cycle process
for studying for Bachelor, Master, and Ph.D.
Bologna Process
The European Higher Education Area helps ensure that higher education systems across Europe are compatible
so that students, researchers, and academics in Europe can collaborate and study/work abroad easily.
And to strengthen the competitiveness and attractiveness of European higher education, the Bologna process
was invented.
The Bologna process is a three-cycle degree structure. Below we have detailed the full process.
First Cycle – Bachelor’s In Europe
Bachelor’s programs in Europe usually have a duration of three to four years for applicants enrolled in full-time
study. The time duration may vary for applicants who wish to enroll in a part-time undergraduate course.
Admission for Bachelor’s is mainly based on high school requirements and entrance tests. In some cases, entrance
exams may not be mandatory, but English language proficiency test scores are necessary. Graduating from a
European university can open up opportunities for skilled employment, but the student needs to complete
180-240 ECTS credits.
Second Cycle – Master’s In Europe
A full-time Master’s program in Europe normally has a duration of one or two years. Most of the master’s courses
are coursework and research related which aims towards professional or research competencies.
Admission for a Master’s requires a bachelor’s degree or any other UG specialization. English language test scores
and standardized test scores are also required for admission. The master’s degree is granted to students upon
completion of 60-120 ECTS credits.
Third Cycle – Ph.D. in Europe
Pursuing Ph.D. courses in Europe requires three to four years of dedication. For admission to Ph.D., students
require both bachelor’s and master’s degrees. Entrance exams and interviews may also be taken. Completion
of a Ph.D. entirely depends on the candidate's performance and research completion.
